Talking is one thing, but Yu Xifeng grabbed the door handle with no intention of giving way.
Sister Zhang got up from the ground and quickly spotted the tin cans inside the bag. “What’s this? That guy just brought it—oh my god, could it be meat?”
Yu Xifeng slammed the door shut with a bang.
Sister Zhang’s hand, which was reaching in, got caught in the door, letting out a scream like a pig being slaughtered.
Yu Xifeng smiled sweetly, “Sorry, slipped a bit. What did you say just now? I didn’t hear clearly.”
After being pinched twice, Sister Zhang finally realized Yu Xifeng wasn’t some tender, easy-to-manipulate girl.
She didn’t even feel embarrassed and brushed off her clothes and pants before standing up.
Deng Feiyu rushed over, “How dare you treat my mom like that?”
Yu Xifeng sneered, “You’re standing at my door. How dare you talk to me like that?”
Deng Feiyu was dazzled by Yu Xifeng’s smile.
The harsh words he wanted to say got stuck in his throat and wouldn’t come out.
Sister Zhang tried to smooth things over: “It’s all a misunderstanding, misunderstanding. You’re Yu Xifeng, right? Auntie didn’t mean anything else. I saw you living alone here with no one to talk to, so I came over to chat and pay a visit.”
Sister Zhang gave Deng Feiyu a look.
Deng Feiyu quickly pulled out some cookies and cheese sticks from his pocket. He seemed to have regained his composure and looked very pleased.
“These are for you. If you finish them, I’ve got more. My mom is actually a very good person. Once you get to know her, you’ll see.”
Sister Zhang’s eyes twitched, full of pride.
Her son was ridiculous—why bring out cookies but also cheese sticks? He’d want to eat those himself later at night.
She quickly stepped forward and grabbed the cheese sticks back. “These are for my little nephew.”
She shoved the remaining half-pack of cookies into Yu Xifeng’s arms. “We’re neighbors; we should visit each other often.”
Her eyes kept darting down to the tin cans on the floor.
With packaging like that, at worst it would be canned yellow croaker fish; maybe beef or mutton; or even pork belly.
She didn’t know what kind of relationship that man just now had with Yu Xifeng—he looked so upright and spirited.
The top cookie even had a bite mark.
Yu Xifeng didn’t reach out for any of it.
She held the door firmly, refusing to let Sister Zhang push any further inside.
“You’re such an ill-mannered girl. I’m much older than you, stood outside your door for a long time, and you didn’t even invite me in for a cup of tea.”
Yu Xifeng said, “I’m indeed not very well-mannered, but I’m a little better than your son. Teach your son well. At his age, he’s still like a giant baby—can’t even say a word without his own mother pushing him to speak. It’s pathetic.”
She only stared at Sister Zhang while saying this, not sparing even a glance for Deng Feiyu.
Deng Feiyu, like a popped balloon, burst with a ‘pop.’
He rushed out, swinging his hand to grab Yu Xifeng’s neck: “Say that again.”
Yu Xifeng caught his wrist, pulled his head inside, and gently shut the door.
Bang.
She personally tested how it feels to have your head caught in a door.
Deng Feiyu was crying with snot and tears all over his face, curled up on the floor, wailing loudly.
Yu Xifeng looked at the dirty floor with disgust and gave him a kick, sending him outside.
“You actually dared to hit my son! I’ll fight you!” Sister Zhang came running.
Yu Xifeng, already tired of entertaining guests today, slammed the door, and Sister Zhang’s head hit the door.
She immediately started crying and screaming.
Despite all the noise, Sister Zhang’s daughter and son-in-law next door made no move.
“I’ve lived so long, yet got stepped on and humiliated by a little prostitute. I don’t want to live anymore. You’re so cold-hearted, you won’t have a good end in this life.
My fate is so bitter—raising a useless daughter who turns against her own mother. People bully their own mom, yet she’s still living comfortably inside.
Better if I were dead. What’s the point of living?”
She rambled on and on in this way.
Deng Feiyu felt embarrassed and quietly slipped away.
Sister Zhang didn’t dare knock on the door again.
Her son couldn’t beat Yu Xifeng; she certainly couldn’t.
She now looked down on Yu Xifeng.
Before, she thought since Yu Xifeng had no parents and was married, the inner circle house belonged to her son.
Then Deng Feiyu could stay in District 1.
Though he now stayed in the inner circle with his daughter, it wasn’t proper or legitimate.
Now, she thought Yu Xifeng was just unlucky. So fierce—what man would dare marry her?
She just wanted to pretend to be crazy and stupid to extort some compensation.
At least two tin cans.
Yu Xifeng closed the door, lay on the bed, and started playing games on her handheld console.
It was still that Mario game.
After a series of intense, agile, and clever moves, Yu Xifeng finally passed that level.
Occasionally, she heard Sister Zhang outside crying and cursing her for being unreasonable, but she treated it like background noise.
She didn’t even look up.
After dying repeatedly in the new level, Yu Xifeng finally put down the console.
Aunt Zhang, realizing it was no fun, had already left.
Dinner was simple—some marinated rice noodles with a side of cold kelp salad.
After resting all day, besides Wang Anmin, she didn’t count Sister Zhang as company.
A day without getting beaten made the air itself smell sweet.
Yu Xifeng woke early the next day.
Her biological clock was forced up to six o’clock by standing postures.
After standing for two hours, Sister Zhang knocked once in the morning, but Yu Xifeng ignored it.
After lunch and a brief rest, Zhang Qiu came.
Two days ago, Zhang Qiu said he wanted to pick her up, but Yu Xifeng refused.
Just as she was about to go to Old Man Cai’s place, she saw Zhang Qiu waiting outside.
He wore a mask, showing only his messy bangs and eyes.
His hair was still cut by Old Man Cai, only in the front to prevent dust mites from irritating his eyes.
Old Man Cai’s skills weren’t great—not bad, but not good either.
Despite the messy hair, his eyes still shone brightly like stars.
Yu Xifeng’s heart skipped a beat.
Could this guy like her too?
She had been scared by Wang Anmin and Sister Zhang’s son; now she had a slight “love paranoia,” suspicious of anyone showing interest.
Yu Xifeng touched her chin, wondering if she had spoiled herself too much this life.
So many men kept coming.
In her previous life, she was in the gutter; the ones who came either wanted to buy her or force her.
If they couldn’t buy her, they would try to force her.
None ended well.
Either they lost their lives or their manhood.
She never showed mercy to anyone who desired her.
So she had no experience dealing with genuine suitors.
She had exhausted all her skills to fend off Wang Anmin yesterday.
Fortunately, Wang Anmin was proud by nature and accepted rejection decisively.
What about Zhang Qiu?
Yu Xifeng thought briefly and dismissed it.
That wasn’t important.
She’d deal with it if it happened.
Sister Zhang’s house was still noisy.
The walls weren’t well soundproofed, so both Yu Xifeng and Zhang Qiu could hear clearly.
Sister Zhang blamed her daughter for not standing up for her, letting Yu Xifeng bully her.
The son-in-law’s family had endured Sister Zhang for a long time.
They told Sister Zhang to take her son back to District 5.
The house had two families living in it, with no room to move.
Deng Feiyu was already so old; it wasn’t appropriate for him to share a bed with his cousin.
And he even stole food from his cousin’s mouth—what kind of behavior was that?
Sister Zhang fought alone, from bearing Deng Mifen for ten months to tracing her son-in-law and the Deng family’s ancestors eight generations back, never backing down.
The son-in-law had had enough. Not wanting to hit his mother-in-law, he grabbed Deng Feiyu and beat him instead.
