Chapter 14: Click
During the World Tournament, entry into the Myriad Sea of Phenomena—the Super S-Class secret realm—was not guaranteed to be safe.
After all, it was a place beyond the ordinary, influenced by certain time-space rules and S-Class mental-type abilities. The amount of information that could be reliably brought back from there was tragically sparse.
The exploration team from that year had all been affected by memory manipulation. No one could explain what exactly had happened within the secret realm. The only clue was Mu Yixia, who had been sent back by Aisha—though back then, she was just a crying child, unable to grasp what had truly occurred.
Years had passed, and Mu Yixia still couldn’t recall any memory of the realm. Even Mu Tong had mostly given up hope of finding news of Aisha. Yet Mu Huiyue had never given up. She had resolved to enter the World Tournament, to return to the Myriad Sea of Phenomena, and find her mother.
Now, Mu Huiyue had inherited those memories. She still clung to the hope of fulfilling that wish. If she could get into the World Tournament, she was determined to make it through the qualifiers and join the team to explore the Myriad Sea of Phenomena.
Lost in her thoughts, Mu Huiyue continued watching the TV show for a while longer, feeling the weight of drowsiness creeping over her.
She checked the situation in the Beast Tamer space. The beginner’s guide on the mission panel was almost complete, and she was just a little bit away from accumulating enough points for the next ten draws.
Next to it, the task list displayed daily and weekly missions—battle, exploring secret realms, and pet evolution all had corresponding rewards with certain limits.
Two of the tasks seemed far off, but battles could still be leveraged during the school’s selection matches, so she needed to focus on training Elan well.
Mu Huiyue lowered her head, spotting the small skeleton sitting beside her, hugging its knees. Its tiny skull wobbled sleepily, and she couldn’t help but smile and pat it.
After such a tough battle, it deserved to rest.
Yawning, she went to wash up. The small skeleton, groggy and sleepy, stumbled after her, but ended up bumping its head on the edge of the bed. It touched the spot it had hit, then dazedly looked up at her.
Outside the window, the moonlight was just right, casting a pure white glow into the room, casting the shadow of a young girl onto the floor, like a thin veil of silk.
“Do you want to rest in the Beast Tamer space, Elan?” Mu Huiyue asked, as she unbound her hair.
Click—the small skeleton shook its head, its shadow merging with hers.
“…You really do like my shadow, don’t you? Is it that comfortable?” Mu Huiyue looked at her shadow, now slightly darker.
The edge of the shadow slowly expanded, and the small skeleton said nothing, instead forming a tiny heart with its shadow.
“Alright then,” Mu Huiyue smiled, accepting the little creature’s gesture. “Goodnight, Elan.”
The next day, Mu Huiyue went about her routine and headed to school.
Yesterday’s battle had stirred a small frenzy around campus, with discussions of the selection matches buzzing everywhere. However, it didn’t really affect her—after all, there weren’t many fools like Luo Song around the school who went out of their way to irritate “Miss Mu.”
With the boost from inherited memories, Mu Huiyue wasn’t concerned about falling behind in her classes. Her focus remained on nurturing her small skeleton.
The key to making a pet strong, aside from its race potential, was the skills it mastered.
Elan’s race level couldn’t be changed, so the only way to increase its strength was to refine its skills.
The Training Ground in the Beast Tamer space was currently the most effective method of training.
In mainstream pet breeding views, skill proficiency wasn’t differentiated. The decisive factor in skill strength was the skill level. No matter how skilled you were at using a lower-tier skill, it could never surpass the power of a higher-tier one.
But in battles between the same tier, proficiency definitely impacted the outcome.
Especially for functional skills—while their power might have a limit, the way they were used, the timing, and efficiency could become the deciding factors in battle.
For example, Shadow Concealment. At first, the small skeleton could only move within a full shadow, but through training, it improved its speed of entering and exiting shadows. Now, it could swiftly move between smaller patches of shadow and even use the shadows cast by an opponent’s ultimate move to dodge the attack.
Similarly, Bone Club Strike—when used with enough proficiency and combat awareness, it could be turned into a temporary control technique.
Mu Huiyue had drawn up a detailed training plan. While she was at school, Elan spent most of its time in the Beast Tamer space’s Training Ground, refining its skills.
Other than that, Mu Huiyue hadn’t found a better way to nurture Elan.
Skeletons were an unpopular choice for battle pets, and there was no complete training path for them.
Most people only knew that they would evolve into slightly bigger skeletal warriors, but few Beast Tamers would bother contracting such a weak pet.
What skills they could learn, how to improve their physique, and how to enhance their evolution strength were all a mystery.
Mu Huiyue could only rely on the results from the Beast Tamer space’s card draws to let Elan learn skills. She couldn’t independently plan a training route.
Although her family had more resources, at the end of the day, she was just a high school student, and most of what she knew about skeletons came from online searches.
If only there was a more systematic way to study Beast Taming knowledge, she thought with a small sigh. Right now, the most likely channel to get it was through entering a prestigious Beast Tamer university.
Before that, though, she had to earn as many task rewards as possible and use the resources from card draws to strengthen Elan.
After class, Mu Huiyue walked out of the classroom and noticed a crowd gathering around the school’s battle arena.
Students were continuously heading in that direction, and after overhearing a few conversations, she realized that the fifth-ranked player in the selection match had called out to challenge the top-ranked Lin Fei.
Lin Fei usually didn’t come to school, but yesterday someone had unexpectedly encountered him in the battle arena, and today, several students were eager to challenge him.
Mu Huiyue thought for a moment and decided to head to the arena to see what this so-called “future of Xingzhou” and “super genius” that the university’s president had chosen really had to offer.
The arena was even more crowded than the day before. Yesterday, Mu Huiyue had impulsively challenged Luo Song, but today, Lin Fei’s match had already spread across the campus, and everyone was eager to see this battle.
Today’s discussions on the selection match were even more heated, and much of that could be attributed to the captain of the school team.
Elan had just finished a round of training, so Mu Huiyue summoned it and found a higher vantage point in the arena to watch the match.
As expected, it was still a 1v1 battle. By the time Mu Huiyue arrived, both opponents had already sent out their pets. Her eyes first fell on Lin Fei, wearing the school’s sports uniform, smiling confidently, before turning to the battlefield.
A bird of radiant light hovered in the air. Its shimmering feathers glistened with mesmerizing rainbow hues, and its long tail feather trailed down like an elegant arc, sweeping from mid-air to the ground.
The shimmering, star-dusted tail feathers of the magnificent creature fell from the sky like a ribbon, casting an ethereal glow that was simply breathtaking.
All eyes in the arena were riveted on this stunning beast. No one dared to tear their gaze away, even for a second.
[Name]: Ribboned Sky Glider
[Attribute]: Psychic
[Species Rank]: High-level Warlord
[Growth Stage]: Juvenile
[Talent Core]: Psychic Vision (C-level)
Mu Huiyue recalled the information about this beast. A high-level Warlord from the Psychic attribute, possessing a creature like this would guarantee a lifetime of success for any Beastmaster, no matter who they were. For a high school student, it was almost unimaginable.
While most students of her age considered themselves fortunate to have a juvenile Warlord-level pet, possessing a Psychic Warlord was like a force from another dimension, striking with overwhelming power. And this Ribboned Sky Glider, from what Mu Huiyue knew, wasn’t even Lin Fei’s trump card.
The Ribboned Sky Glider had a built-in mental suggestion ability, making it hard for anyone to focus on anything but it. Mu Huiyue had to gather her senses to shift her attention to the opponent across the arena.
The student who was challenging Lin Fei was ranked fifth in the school’s selection tournament. Mu Huiyue couldn’t remember his name, but his contracted pet was a high-elite juvenile Fire-type beast: the Flame-Tail Cat.
The Flame-Tail Cat, while larger than an average cat, still belonged to the small, agile category. Its tail was ablaze with fierce flames as it crouched low to the ground, warily watching the Ribboned Sky Glider suspended above.
As the judge announced the start of the match, the Flame-Tail Cat ignited, transforming into a blazing wheel of fire, speeding toward the Sky Glider. Just before impact, the fiery wheel leapt into the air and aimed to strike from behind.
However, the radiant Glider didn’t flinch or even glance toward its attacker. Its tail feathers glowed with blinding light, precisely striking the incoming firewheel before it could reach its target.
The Flame-Tail Cat let out a pained cry, tumbling through the air and crashing to the ground.
Watching this, Mu Huiyue narrowed her eyes. Over the past few days, her meditation and battle perception in the training arena had made her keenly aware of battlefield dynamics. It only took a glance to see the Glider’s counterattack strategy—its vision had no blind spots, encompassing the entire 720-degree battlefield.
No matter which direction the Flame-Tail Cat attacked from, it was futile. The Glider’s movements were flawless, evading every attack with perfect precision, as though it could predict its opponent’s every move.
Mu Huiyue knew it wasn’t true precognition but rather the Glider’s unparalleled battlefield insight.
Its talent core, Psychic Vision, allowed it to read the smallest movements of its opponent, predicting attacks and dodging them with ease, making it seem as though it was seeing into the future.
After a few more exchanges, the Glider barely moved. Meanwhile, the Flame-Tail Cat was exhausted and, after being struck by the glowing tail once again, collapsed to the ground, unable to rise.
The Flame-Tail Cat should have had a stronger constitution than the Glider, yet it was overwhelmed and rendered helpless.
This battle style reminded Mu Huiyue of the match between her little skeleton and the giant crocodile. While the skeleton used its shadow stealth to avoid attacks, the Glider used its Psychic Vision to dominate with sheer power, making it nearly impossible to counter.
The match ended with a one-sided victory, Lin Fei easily maintaining his rank. He recalled the Ribboned Sky Glider and shook hands with his challenger, offering a few words of praise.
The fifth-ranked student, also a member of the school team, was no longer disheartened. After the encouragement, he happily conversed with Lin Fei.
Mu Huiyue let out a soft sigh. A Psychic Warlord, at this stage, truly had no weaknesses.
Her father’s Red Flame Wolf, Pali, was a higher-tier Monarch species, with the talent core “Crimson Lotus Flames,” a pure attack skill that dominated most challengers in the dojo. But while its pressure was immense, it could be outmaneuvered with the right strategy.
The Glider’s Psychic Vision, on the other hand, was flawless, making it nearly impossible to defeat. Mu Huiyue couldn’t think of any way to overcome it.
“Ka-ta?” The small skeleton beside her tilted its head, sensing her emotions and letting out a concerned sound.
“Elren…” Mu Huiyue glanced at her partner, pausing before asking, “Would you feel discouraged facing an opponent like the Ribboned Sky Glider?”
“Ka-ta!” The small skeleton shook its head firmly, “Ka-ta-ta—!”
(Of course not! No matter the opponent, I’ll bring victory to Huiyue—!)
Mu Huiyue blinked, touched by Elren’s confidence. She remembered that, even against stronger foes, Elren had never backed down, not even against enemies with abilities it struggled to counter.
“…I still have a long way to go with my training,” Mu Huiyue smiled, encouraged by her pet.
“Ka-ta?” The small skeleton tilted its head in confusion.
“Nothing,” Mu Huiyue said with a soft smile, “My Elren is truly amazing, in so many ways.” She stood and extended her hand to the little creature. “Let’s go home together.”
“Ka-ta-ka-ta?” (Will there be cream stew again today?)
“If you like, I’ll make it again.” Mu Huiyue nodded.
Elren perked up, happily bounding into her shadow as they left the arena.
