Chapter 11: Her Voice
I’m sorry… I couldn’t protect you…
“Zzi zzi zzi zzi—”
Everything happened too quickly!
When Xue Huiyu snapped back to reality, she saw the overturned car crashing through the bridge guardrail, with half of the car’s front hanging over the edge. The severe impact had ruptured the fuel tank, and sparks were crackling from the leaking fuel…
“Pei Wenyu!”
Xue Huiyu hurriedly floated into the car and saw Pei Wenyu, covered in blood, lying in the back seat. The car’s front end was teetering, on the verge of falling into the river, while the heat generated from the collision could cause the leaking fuel to catch fire and explode at any moment!
She had to get Pei Wenyu out of there as quickly as possible!
Thinking about the driver who had jumped out of the car, Xue Huiyu floated back outside, only to find the driver lying motionless on the ground, a pool of blood around him.
Jumping out of a moving car at high speed was already a dangerous act, and now the driver was severely injured and unconscious, unable to help.
Damn it! Wasn’t there any car passing by?
“Pei Wenyu! Pei Wenyu! Wake up! Wake up!”
“Huiyu…”
“Yes, yes, it’s me, it’s me! Can you hear my voice?! Pei Wenyu, can you really hear my voice?!”
Xue Huiyu’s trembling voice rose in pitch due to her excitement.
Pei Yuqi could see her! Maybe Pei Wenyu could see her too!
“But why did it take you so long to see me… I’ve been reminding you all along…” Thinking that Pei Wenyu could only see her because he was dying, tears fell from Xue Huiyu’s eyes, accompanied by sobs and desperate pleas.
“Do you still have the strength to escape? Are you seriously injured? Help will come soon… Hold on… Don’t give up on yourself… Don’t speak, save your strength… When someone arrives, I’ll call you…”
“Don’t sleep… you can’t sleep…”
Pei Wenyu thought he was hallucinating. He heard Xue Huiyu’s voice.
Intermittent and muffled, with a ringing in his ears, but it was definitely Xue Huiyu’s voice.
The Xue Huiyu who would always glare at him in his dreams, was now speaking with such a sorrowful voice, urgently calling his name, pleading for him to hold on and survive.
But it was at the moment of his death.
He had once begged her, countless times, to survive, but three and a half years had passed, and she still hadn’t come back.
Now, was she here to take him because he was about to die?
How nice.
At least, before he died, she was willing to see him for the last time…
And he had so many things he wanted to say to her…
“Huiyu…”
At that moment, Pei Wenyu, whose body ached all over, tried to open his eyes to see her, but he found that his eyelids were too heavy to open.
He struggled to raise his now incredibly heavy arm, reaching toward the sound.
“I’m sorry…”
“I couldn’t protect you…”
“It’s all my fault… I’m the one who caused this…”
If only he had held Xue Huiyu’s hand back then…
If only Xue Huiyu hadn’t married him…
His arm grew more and more numb, and the pain spread, making it difficult even to speak. Blood continued to drip from his face, mixing with tears and rainwater, like sand in an hourglass…
“I’ve come to find you…”
The hand he had struggled to lift fell without touching anything. Xue Huiyu wanted to hold his hand but could only watch helplessly as his hand dropped from hers.
“What do you mean, ‘find me’?”
Don’t die, don’t die, don’t die!
Watching helplessly as Pei Wenyu’s head dropped unconsciously, Xue Huiyu’s voice trembled even more violently. “If I die, you’ll die too. Who will take care of our child then…”
“Pei Wenyu, you can’t be so irresponsible! You promised to take care of him! He’s been mute for three and a half years, and I haven’t even had the chance to complain to you, and now you want to give up completely?! How could you be so cruel, leaving our child to grow up without parents? What if he turns out bad in the future? What if he gets bullied?”
Don’t die, don’t die, don’t die—
Xue Huiyu cried uncontrollably.
She couldn’t understand why the heavens had to be so cruel! Why had they made her a ghost three years later? Why let her see her child but be unable to care for him herself? Why let her see her husband get into a car accident while she couldn’t do anything to help…
Why did they have to treat her like this?
[Do you want to revive?]
A cold, mechanical voice suddenly echoed in her mind, and Xue Huiyu abruptly stopped crying in panic.
“Yes!” She answered without hesitation, her voice urgent and filled with expectation. “Can you let me touch him? I just need to get him out of the car…”
“Please… please… let me call an ambulance at least! He’s unconscious, covered in blood. If I don’t save him now, he’s going to die!”
“He can’t die… There’s still our child waiting for him at home…”
[You’re right. Pei Wenyu will die in ten minutes. And your child, Pei Yuqi, will grow up lacking love, eventually becoming a deeply twisted and pathological villain.]
[Do you want to change this future?]
Xue Huiyu didn’t believe that her son would become a villain, and she couldn’t bear to think about him being bullied at such a young age. If Pei Wenyu died, her son’s life would be filled with suffering. She could already imagine the ugly, predatory expression of Xia Lanzhi. So now, her mind was completely consumed by one thing.
That was—save Pei Wenyu! Pei Wenyu absolutely could not die!
“I want to change! What do I have to do to revive? I’ll pay any price…”
[Ding! Congratulations, Miss Xue Huiyu, for successfully activating the “Passerby A Resurrection System”! I am your accompanying system, 1070. To test whether you are eligible for a return to the living, you will undergo a 100-day resurrection mission assessment. Within these 100 days, accumulate your resurrection points. After 100 days, the system will determine if you qualify for revival based on your performance and accumulated points…]
With the system’s notification sound, heavy raindrops pelted down on her face. The coldness of the rain made Xue Huiyu freeze for a moment.
“Thank you! Thank you!”
She didn’t even fully hear what was said next, but realizing that she now had a physical body, Xue Huiyu burst into tears, her heart overwhelmed with emotion. She immediately opened the car door and, while choking on her sobs, cautiously tried to pull the unconscious Pei Wenyu from the overturned back seat.
But her movement caused the car’s front end, which had been suspended, to collapse under the strain. There was a series of violent “bangs” as the shattered guardrail and car fell into the river.
As the car sank into the river, any hope of survival was reduced to nearly zero…
Xue Huiyu didn’t think twice. She had completely forgotten that she now had a physical body and jumped after it.
The car hitting the river splashed large waves, and the icy, biting water hit her face. Xue Huiyu, who had jumped into the water, choked on several mouthfuls of murky water before realizing that she was wearing a winter down jacket!
Realizing her body was sinking, she quickly took off her jacket and, ignoring her numbing body, swam with all her might toward the sinking car.
Since she had already opened the car door, Xue Huiyu didn’t need to worry about the pressure of the water making it impossible to open. However, in just the blink of an eye, the car was already submerged halfway in the water, and in a few minutes, it would completely sink.
Bright red blood spread out in the river, and only Pei Wenyu’s head was still above the surface. His body was cold, his lips purple, and it was clear he was either dying from blood loss or drowning. Xue Huiyu urgently supported his armpits, trying to pull him out of the trapped back seat.
But…
Pei Wenyu’s body was wedged between the driver’s seat and the back seat!
Xue Huiyu strained to push the driver’s seat aside, but it was already twisted and deformed, immovable with her strength.
By now, the river had already risen to the car’s roof. As the car sank, Pei Wenyu, who had lost consciousness, was pulled down into the water, his face as white as a sheet. He was bubbling from his mouth, sinking deeper along with the car…
Xue Huiyu’s face changed. She gripped his collar and shook him desperately.
Pei Wenyu didn’t respond. She immediately surfaced, took a deep breath, and dove back in as fast as she could.
Her trembling hands cupped his face, and she pressed her lips to his, giving him mouth-to-mouth, urgently shaking him at the same time.
Pei Wenyu slowly opened his eyes, and Xue Huiyu was overjoyed. She immediately surfaced again, took a quick breath, and dived back into the water.
With her left hand gripping the driver’s seat, her right hand struggled to feel under the broken glass for the lever beneath the deformed seat. When she found it, she pushed hard on the driver’s seat.
It took two tries before she managed to create enough space to move Pei Wenyu, and at that moment, he passed out again. Panicked, Xue Huiyu pulled him out of the car.
Pei Wenyu was so heavy that Xue Huiyu had to use both hands to support his armpits from behind, exerting all her strength to lift him to the surface.
They were in the middle of the river, far from the shore. Xue Huiyu didn’t have enough strength to swim them back. She could only barely keep him floating on the water.
But Pei Wenyu was severely injured, and with his legs already disabled, the prolonged immersion in the water would only cause the wounds to become more infected. He needed to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible!
“System! System! Are you there?! Now that I’ve revived, what kind of golden finger do I have? Is there something that can instantly teleport us to the hospital?”
Xue Huiyu suddenly realized that she was no longer an ordinary person—she had been chosen by the heavens to revive after death!
Perhaps she had a golden finger!
But soon, the cold voice in her mind felt like a cold shower.
Author’s Note:
Why does the male lead encounter another accident after already being in a car crash? It’s because, according to the novel’s setting, he must die. There’s no logic in the original novel—if it’s his time to die today, then he must die today qwq. Poor thing.
Kid: Why haven’t mom and dad come back yet… Feeling lost.
