Chapter 22 – Could You Be Pregnant?
Jiang Wan finished her meal in a good mood, then glanced at Song Jiuli, who was clearly starting to soften, and shoved the bowl into her hands.
“Go wash the dishes.”
“Alright.”
Song Jiuli let out a faint sigh. Meeting her mother’s indifferent gaze, she didn’t dare disobey Jiang Wan, so she carried the bowls away.
As for Shen Qian, she didn’t even get the chance to act pitiful. She could only purse her lips in grievance and try to curry favor with Song Chen.
“Husband, I only did it to help you recover faster. I didn’t expect to fall into Jiang Wan’s trap.”
Song Chen gave her a light glance and said nothing. At that moment, Concubine Duan was helping him clean off the wild vegetables stuck to his body.
To him, this was a mark of humiliation!
At this point, he naturally wouldn’t bother responding to Shen Qian. She was left bitter and speechless. The wild vegetables she had painstakingly gathered were all thrown onto the ground.
As if still not satisfied, she even stomped on them hard a few times, leaving everyone speechless.
“Elder sister, these wild vegetables are edible. It’s wasteful to treat them like that.”
Even Concubine Duan, who usually had no sense of presence, dared to speak up and ridicule Shen Qian, which infuriated her. Shen Qian slapped her hard across the face.
“These are my things. I can do whatever I want with them!”
She couldn’t deal with Jiang Wan, but surely she could handle a lowly concubine who used to be a pleasure courtesan?
Concubine Duan hadn’t expected that, even after being warned, Shen Qian would still be so arrogant. She bit her lip in grievance and didn’t complain to Song Chen.
“Master, if I blow on it for you, it won’t hurt anymore.”
It was precisely her considerate demeanor that made Song Chen grow even more disgusted with Shen Qian. He warned her coldly:
“If you don’t behave yourself, don’t blame me for being harsh!”
That statement successfully shut Shen Qian up. Now that she was penniless and completely reliant on the Song family, she couldn’t afford to act out anymore.
Across from them, Jiang Wan witnessed the whole scene and felt a bit speechless. Shen Qian’s maiden family had sent a large amount of silver. She was supposed to be living the best life among them all.
Who would have thought she’d end up worse than the original host in the book? She had brought this on herself.
Song Jiuchi was applying medicine to Song Jiuyuan again. Jiang Wan used a cloth to block everyone’s view, then slipped a soft insole into the shoes of the madam of the house.
“Mother, walk with these padded in your shoes.”
“Alright.”
The matriarch’s heart was deeply touched, and she became even more pleased with Jiang Wan. Sure enough, with the insoles, walking became much easier.
But when she thought about her younger son carrying the eldest, her heart softened again. Song Jiuchi wasn’t like Jiuli—carrying Song Jiuyuan every day was an enormous strain.
Seeing this, Jiang Wan gave another pair of insoles to the matriarch.
“Let Jiuchi use these too.”
“Thank you, Wanwan!”
Tears welled up in the matriarch’s eyes. Naturally, Song Jiuchi heard this as well. He was thin-skinned but still softly replied:
“Thank you.”
Jiang Wan… really seemed different now!
Even Song Jiuyuan couldn’t help but glance at Jiang Wan in surprise, his eyes showing a complex emotion she couldn’t read.
Jiang Wan felt uneasy, so she avoided his gaze and stood up, saying:
“I’ll go see if there’s anything to eat nearby.”
Living by the mountain meant relying on the mountain. Even though she had a space full of supplies, Jiang Wan never thought of giving up on foraging. Of course, while “looking for food,” she also secretly snuck snacks out from her space.
Watching her tall figure walk away, the matriarch gently educated the children, “Yuan’er, it’s clear Wanwan truly likes you. Maybe the things she did in the past were influenced by the Ministry of Officials’ residence.
Now that she’s devoted to living a good life with you, you should cherish it.”
“Mother, she’s very scheming. This could be part of her plan.”
Song Jiuchi frowned. He just didn’t think Jiang Wan was good enough for his brilliant older brother.
“Shut your mouth!”
The matriarch glared harshly at him. “Did you feed everything she gave you to the dogs?”
She even tapped the insole stuffed into Song Jiuchi’s shoe. “These insoles—she gave them too.
You’re using her things and still talking behind her back. What happened to the values of courtesy, righteousness, integrity, and shame that your father and I taught you?”
Song Jiuchi opened his mouth but couldn’t find a single word to argue back.
Even Song Jiuyuan spoke up, “Jiuchi, no matter what kind of person Jiang Wan may be, at least right now, she’s sincere toward us.”
He wasn’t someone who couldn’t tell right from wrong. Even if, like Jiuchi said, she had hidden intentions, they could wait until she made them known to judge.
“I understand.”
Song Jiuchi didn’t dare argue anymore. As for what he really thought, only he knew.
As for Song Jiuli, she’d been worn out all day by Jiang Wan and didn’t have the energy to think of anything else. She just quietly kept up with the journey.
“We’ve been walking for several days. I don’t even know where we are now.”
Song Jiuli sighed. Jiang Wan replied, “I overheard the officers saying we’re almost to Minzhou.”
“Minzhou?”
The matriarch paused in surprise. “That’s where Jiao-jie got married. I wonder if she knows we’ve been exiled.”
“Jiao-jie?”
Jiang Wan searched her memory and found the name. Oh, she was Song Chen’s biological sister—one of those who had bullied the original Jiang Wan.
Because Song Jiaojiao and the original host’s half-sister were best friends, they often teamed up to mock her.
Rubbing her chin thoughtfully, Jiang Wan decided—if there was a chance, Song Jiaojiao’s private stash wouldn’t be spared either!
“She’s the legitimate daughter of the second branch.”
The matriarch didn’t have a great relationship with Song Jiaojiao either, but because of Song Jiuyuan’s status, Song Jiaojiao used to flatter her.
This topic was only briefly brought up, and everyone continued on their way without giving it much thought.
No one knew why, but the past two days had grown increasingly hot. Jiang Wan felt that her coarse hemp clothes were sticking uncomfortably to her skin.
Every night, she would secretly slip into her space to wash up after everyone had fallen asleep.
After another two days of this, Jiang Wan started feeling nauseous and dizzy. Her steps became unsteady.
“Urgh!”
She almost threw up her lunch. This body was definitely worse than her original one. She needed to start training.
Only with a healthy body could she maximize her powers.
“Wanwan, are you alright?”
The matriarch looked at her with deep concern. After a few days of interaction, she now saw Jiang Wan as her own daughter.
Even Song Jiuyuan looked over. Jiang Wan wiped her lips and calmly said,
“It’s nothing.”
She felt like she had a touch of heatstroke. The temperature had been fluctuating wildly, and they’d been sleeping outdoors. Plus, she had just transmigrated into this body, so some discomfort was normal and still bearable.
“Heavens, could you be pregnant? Before I got married, my mother told me this kind of vomiting means you’re pregnant.”
After keeping quiet for two days, Shen Qian finally couldn’t resist. She was willing to do anything to humiliate Jiang Wan.
“Am I right, Mother?”
Second Madam Song, who had originally planned to continue ignoring Shen Qian, paused in surprise. Then she quickly decided to join forces with her.
“Qianqian’s right. Pregnant women usually throw up like that. Congratulations, sister-in-law. Looks like you’re going to be a grandmother!”
Her words were dripping with mockery. Jiang Wan had only married Song Jiuyuan a day before they were exiled.
If she really was pregnant, that meant she had been unfaithful to Song Jiuyuan—the child would be a bastad.
