Chapter 30: If Her Secret is Discovered, Then That Person Must Not Be Allowed to Live
The group pressed on wearily, while Jiang Wan, on the other hand, was somewhat tempted by the wolves.
That was meat, after all. She had seen the officers drag away one of the wolves, probably to be used as their rations. The rest, which they couldn’t take, were all left behind on the spot.
Jiang Wan’s eyes darted around. She said to Ren Bang, “You go ahead. I’m going back to retrieve your arrows.”
“Forget it. It’s not safe.”
Though Ren Bang was usually indifferent toward exiles, Jiang Wan had just saved him. He couldn’t just stand by and watch her risk danger again for a few arrows.
“Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.”
Jiang Wan flashed a bright smile. Meeting Song Jiuyuan’s puzzled gaze in the distance, she turned back after getting Ren Bang’s approval.
She did have other motives—she wanted to confirm whether this was indeed Song Jiaojiao’s doing. Jiang Wan threw all the wolf carcasses into her space.
Finally, on the lead wolf, she found a type of medicinal powder. Wrapping it in a handkerchief, she planned to find someone to analyze its ingredients later when she had the chance.
Whoosh…
“Who’s there?”
Jiang Wan warily looked toward a certain direction, breaking out in a cold sweat. She was a little annoyed.
If someone had really followed her back and saw her retrieve items out of thin air—wouldn’t that mean her secret was exposed?
Gripping the arrow in her hand tightly, she made up her mind: no matter who that person was, since they had discovered her secret, they absolutely could not be allowed to live.
Jiang Wan was no saint. Anything or anyone that could threaten her life had to be eliminated.
She drew her bow and shouted toward the distance, “Sneaking around—come out right now!”
Rustling sounds emerged. Jiang Wan furrowed her brows. Just as she was hesitating whether to move forward, a flash of white darted by.
Her eyes narrowed, and she quickly released her arrow!
The white blur was struck and fell—only then did Jiang Wan see clearly: it was a little white rabbit. She quietly let out a breath of relief. Luckily, it wasn’t a person.
Otherwise, she’d have to deal with the pressure of her spatial ability being exposed. Such a miraculous thing—once revealed—would be a huge headache even with all her skills.
She picked up the half-dead white rabbit by its ears. “Little guy, you really ran into the wrong person.”
She just happened to be craving meat. The officers, grateful she had saved them, likely wouldn’t stop her from eating some.
With a cheerful grin, Jiang Wan carried the little white rabbit back. As expected, everyone tactfully ignored what was in her hand.
Ren Bang even solemnly thanked her, “Miss from the Song family, thank you for saving my life just now.”
He wasn’t ungrateful. Since Jiang Wan had saved him, from now on, he would protect her and her family.
“You’re welcome.”
Jiang Wan smiled like a blooming flower and even took some herbs out of her luggage. “I saw some of the officers were injured earlier. This can stop the bleeding.”
“Thank you, Miss.”
“Big Sister Jiang, you’re so kind. Thank you!”
“…”
Jiang Wan instantly won over all the officers. She believed that no matter what outrageous thing she did in the future, they’d all just turn a blind eye.
Not far away, the Song family members were so angry they could vomit blood. Shen Qian, clutching her still-bleeding wound, accused her relatives:
“Jiang Wan would rather give the herbs to outsiders than to us.”
“That heartless creature—Song Jiuyuan marrying her must be the worst misfortune in eight lifetimes!”
Madam Song looked sorrowfully at her sons and grandsons, clutching her aching chest in anger. Fortunately, there was still her obedient granddaughter Song Jiaojiao.
“Second daughter-in-law, did Jiaojiao bring you the medicine?”
“She did, she did. She cares deeply about us—not only did she bring medicine, but also dry rations.”
Second Madam Song beamed with pride, deliberately hiding how reluctant Song Jiaojiao had been. But when she opened her luggage, she was dumbfounded.
“Where’s my stuff?!”
She frantically opened her bundle. Not only were the medicine and snacks gone, even the clothes Jiaojiao had prepared for her were missing!
And there had been silver inside too!
“Mom, try looking again, don’t panic.”
Shen Qian had personally seen Jiaojiao give her things. She grew suspicious—could her mother be pretending not to want to share?
“It’s gone. Everything’s gone!”
Second Madam Song searched the bundle from top to bottom. She was about to explode. But Third Madam Song didn’t believe her.
“Second sister-in-law, you’re not like that heartless Jiang Wan, are you? Just can’t bear to share the good stuff with us?”
“I want snacks! I want snacks!”
Young Song Yang kicked up a fuss in the old matriarch’s arms. Raised with privilege, the child had been craving sweets desperately.
“I’m telling the truth! It’s all gone!!”
Second Madam Song’s mind raced. She had been hugging the bundle from last night until now.
How did it disappear? Could it really be haunted?!
“Mother, do you believe her?”
Third Madam Song looked at the old lady. “I think Second Sister-in-law just doesn’t want to share. We’re all one family—who doesn’t know your nature?”
“You’re just pretending!”
“Third Aunt, my mother wouldn’t do that.”
Song Chen quickly tried to defend her, but Third Madam Song wasn’t listening. She had bottled up a lot of resentment.
They couldn’t fight Jiang Wan now with the officers protecting her—but they could fight among themselves.
Second Madam Song fumed, “Don’t yell at me. I could say you were the one who stole my stuff in the chaos earlier!”
“Pah! If I took it, would I still be asking you for it?”
“It was you! It had to be! You’re shouting the loudest—must be guilty!”
“…”
The Song family quickly descended into chaos. The women started brawling, and Jiang Wan watched the scene unfold with great amusement.
“What’s going on here?!”
Old Zhang appeared, whip in hand, striding toward them. Second and Third Madams were still wrestling like common street scoundrels. Shen Qian tried to break them up.
Crack!
The whip landed on all three of them.
“Keep fighting! I dare you!”
“I’ll beat you to death! Still think you’re noble ladies or something?”
“…”
Old Zhang had been annoyed all day because his colleague had been bitten, and these women yelling non-stop gave him a headache. He didn’t hold back.
The two women who had been brawling were now rolling on the ground from the pain, while Shen Qian cried from the lashes.
“Sir, sir, we won’t fight anymore!”
“I was wrong! Please spare me!”
“It’s not my fault! Stop hitting me!”
“…”
Once noble and esteemed ladies, they now crawled up from the ground like shamed beggars.
“Make another sound, and I won’t be so nice next time!”
Old Zhang stuck his whip back into his belt and muttered words that pierced the Song family’s pride.
“Still think you’re some high-society women? You’re no different from village hags now.”
Everyone: …
In fact, after being beaten, the women did quiet down. But now they faced a new problem.
They really didn’t have any medicine, and a large family still needed it. Shen Qian couldn’t help but glance at Jiang Wan.
But when her gaze met Ren Bang standing not far from Jiang Wan, she shrank back in fear. They truly didn’t dare provoke Jiang Wan anymore.
After all, those officers’ whips were no joke.
