Chapter 24: Almost Died

Jiang Huaiyue had only one thought in her mind: her life was in danger!

Looking up, she saw Pei Ji’s expression was icy cold, his gaze as if looking at a dead person.

“Who told you to come here?” he said in a cold voice.

Before Jiang Huaiyue could respond, Gu Yuan beside them spoke up.

“Sis is coughing up blood,” she said. Although her mind was not fully developed, she still understood the situation and immediately tried to run over to help Jiang Huaiyue.

Pei Ji reached out and held her back, his expression softening slightly. “A Yuan, I brought you some tasty snacks. Let Moying take you back inside to eat.”

Seeing her dry eyelashes, it looked like she had been crying. A flash of killing intent passed through his eyes.

“But Sis is coughing up blood and needs medicine,” Gu Yuan said anxiously, looking at Jiang Huaiyue.

Pei Ji gently stroked her hair. “I know. I’ll give her medicine. You go inside first.”

With that, he gave Moying a look, and Moying understood immediately, took out some food, and coaxed Gu Yuan away.

Jiang Huaiyue leaned on the wall and slowly stood up. Meeting Pei Ji’s gaze, she felt some fear in her heart. “I didn’t mean to intrude.”

Pei Ji stepped closer and closer, his whole aura cold and terrifying. Fear was hidden in Jiang Huaiyue’s eyes, and her heart was full of complicated emotions.

She thought he was the person he liked, but she never expected it was his sister.

But the script said Pei Ji was an orphan. How could he have a sister? Could he have some other identity? If that was true, her situation would be even worse.

She had accidentally uncovered his secret, and he would definitely kill her.

Lost in these chaotic thoughts, her wrist was suddenly grabbed tightly through her clothes. Jiang Huaiyue staggered as she was dragged behind him out of the courtyard.

She was already injured, and now her wrist was squeezed painfully, but she didn’t dare to say anything. Being under his roof, if he wanted to strangle her, it would be as easy as killing an ant. How could she save herself?

Pei Ji took her outside the courtyard, then pushed open a room door and, with a flick of his hand, threw Jiang Huaiyue to the ground.

“Cough cough—” Pain hit her chest, and she couldn’t help but cough twice.

Pei Ji looked down at her from above. The sunlight shining behind him outlined his sharply defined features. “Jiang Huaiyue, anyone who knows my secret must die.”

A Yuan was his most sensitive point—before Pei Ji became what he is, no outsider could know she was alive. So today, she must die.

Jiang Huaiyue shrank her body and weakly looked up. “I don’t know anything, I didn’t see anything, really.”

At this moment, how she wished she were blind. Her life was too miserable—either about to be killed or killed on the way.

“Only a dead person’s mouth is the most tightly sealed.” His voice dropped as he leaned down, his big hand directly grabbing Jiang Huaiyue’s neck, lifting her up.

Her pale face instantly flushed red. She struggled to pry his hand off, but he held with full strength, and she couldn’t move him.

With no strength in her hands, she kicked at him, but to Pei Ji, it was like a mere tickle—he didn’t even care.

Jiang Huaiyue’s clear eyes reddened, suffocation creeping in. She couldn’t help but cry. After all she’d been through, was she going to die now?

But she had a promise with Wanwan that she hadn’t fulfilled yet. She couldn’t die. If not for Pei Ji, how would she be so miserable? A flash of hatred crossed her eyes.

“Pei Ji… you’ve killed so many people, aren’t you afraid of retribution coming… to your sister?”

Warm tears fell onto Pei Ji’s hand. Suddenly hearing her words, his eyes turned cold. “You’re looking for death!”

He gripped harder again, and Jiang Huaiyue had no choice but to grit her teeth, bend her knees, and headbutt him fiercely.

Pei Ji dodged with incredible speed. Jiang Huaiyue was thrown aside and bent over, coughing badly on the ground.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Pei Ji suddenly pull out a dagger from somewhere. The dagger gleamed silver, sending a chill down one’s spine.

“Since you don’t want to live anymore, just right—this lord will help you on your way,” he said as he closed in. Jiang Huaiyue’s breath caught, and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up.

This madman—he was truly insane.

“Pei Ji, I know a divine doctor who might be able to cure A Yuan,” she shouted with all her might at the critical moment, closing her eyes.

After a moment, she slowly opened her eyes and looked at Pei Ji, who had stopped moving. She knew she had bet correctly.

A Yuan was indeed ill, and he did care.

Pei Ji gave a playful smile: “You, a deep palace lord, know a divine doctor? If you’re lying, at least come up with a better excuse.”

Besides, A Yuan was born premature and weak, left with an incurable illness.

“It’s true. That day, I met the doctor at the medical clinic. She was able to relieve the poison inside me, so she must have a way to cure A Yuan. Even if she can’t restore A Yuan’s mind, at least she can help manage her health.”

Jiang Huaiyue was now trying a desperate last resort, her hand trembling as it hid in her sleeve.

Pei Ji elegantly squatted in front of her. He glanced at her for a long moment before turning the dagger in his hand.

“Even without you, I can find the doctor myself.”

He couldn’t gamble on A Yuan’s existence. If she leaked this information, A Yuan would be in danger.

Seeing the cold cruelty in his eyes, Jiang Huaiyue knew what he was worried about.

“If you don’t believe me, lord, you can send someone to watch me. If I’m suspected of leaking anything, just have them kill me immediately.”

Pei Ji looked at the determination in her eyes, then, recalling A Yuan’s earlier worries about her, suddenly asked, “Why was A Yuan crying?”

Jiang Huaiyue was taken aback, not expecting the topic to shift so quickly.

She answered, “I was looking for Fangtuo. When she saw me, she called me sister and wanted me to play with her. But I was afraid you’d come, so I wanted to leave. Then she grabbed me and cried.”

Pei Ji said nothing, seemingly lost in thought.

Fearing he might go mad and kill her again, Jiang Huaiyue hurriedly added, “I comforted her and gave her a candy. She’s probably alone in that courtyard, feeling lonely, so she wanted me to play with her.”

“If you so much as reveal a word about A Yuan, I will make sure you cannot live nor die,” Pei Ji warned coldly.

Listening to his words, Jiang Huaiyue realized she wouldn’t die for now and secretly relaxed. She promised him, “Lord, rest assured, I won’t say a word.”

Pei Ji put away the dagger and left without so much as a glance back.

After he left, Jiang Huaiyue’s legs felt weak as she stood, rubbing her painfully squeezed neck, still filled with lingering fear.

One or two people—ill, crazy, mad dogs, bastards.

She cursed Pei Ji silently in her heart, then dragged her body out the door and saw Fangtuo in Mo Ying’s arms. She walked over and picked up the silly cat.

Mo Ying was surprised to see her come out safely.

He had thought the master would have killed the lord already, but unexpectedly…
