Li Xin led Chi Yu to the basement. First, they entered a storage room. Then, Li Xin pressed a mechanism, and one of the walls automatically parted to reveal a hidden chamber in front of them.
“It’s in there,” Li Xin motioned for Chi Yu to enter. “Not only is your Earth Soul here, but also your three souls.”
Chi Yu followed behind Li Xin. “Is it them who found you?”
“No,” Li Xin closed the door to the hidden chamber, and the luminous pearl inside emitted a tranquil, bright light, illuminating the entire room. “It’s something I found after searching for years.”
“You’ve been searching all this time…” Chi Yu, though not easily able to feel others’ emotions, was deeply moved.
“You asked me what forbidden technique I used to live for over a thousand years, right?” Li Xin turned to Chi Yu and said, “It’s the Soul Transfer and Body Possession technique.”
“What is that?” Chi Yu asked eagerly.
“It’s a resurrection technique where the soul is transferred into the body of a recently deceased baby. But every sixty years, the transfer must be repeated,” Li Xin looked at Chi Yu. “I was worried about being exposed, so I created those two mannequins in the Ghost Pool. Each time the transfer occurred, I would rapidly grow into an adult, so I had to create a substitute, an illusion of a single heir in the Li family.”
“How did you learn this?”
“After you died, I searched for your soul for years but couldn’t find it. Fearing that I might not be able to continue searching if I died, I secretly returned to the old site of Fude Temple. There was an underground chamber there, and from it, I found an ancient text. That’s where I learned it.”
“And how did you know about the chamber?”
“You told me.”
“I?” Chi Yu was confused.
Li Xin continued, “The year before you offered yourself to the heavens, you were named the next leader by your master. He told you about this secret chamber, and later, your Earth Soul informed me of it.”
“Does the Earth Soul still have memories?”
Li Xin nodded, “It does, but not much.”
Li Xin pointed to a one-foot-high jade statue. “Your Earth Soul is in here. The other two statues contain your two other souls, Que Yin and Fu Shi. One more soul is in the jade crown.”
Chi Yu walked over and gazed at the three jade statues. He immediately recognized them as statues of himself.
“Did you carve these?”
Li Xin nodded, “I didn’t carve them well, I could only capture about seventy percent of your spirit.”
Chi Yu smiled lightly. “I didn’t know you had this skill.”
He then looked at the jade crown. “Did you carve this as well?”
Li Xin nodded. “The year you brought back Chang Wu and Chang You, I came across this fine piece of jade in the mountains, so I made this crown for you. The two deer on it were carved based on the figures of Chang Wu and Chang You.”
Chi Yu gently picked up the jade crown, feeling its weight. Li Xin had done so much for him.
He lowered his head and gently traced the patterns on the crown, then looked up at Li Xin. “You really went to a lot of trouble.”
“As long as Brother Shi likes it, I’m willing to do anything,” Li Xin said earnestly, his eyes full of warmth and affection.
Chi Yu’s feelings were complicated. Li Xin was too kind to him—kindness that seemed to go beyond that of a brother.
Li Xin took the jade crown from his hands, removed the ghost officer’s hat from his head, and placed the crown properly on his head, smiling contentedly.
“You once said you really liked it and that you’d wear it every day.”
Chi Yu reached up and touched his head. “It does look good, but this earthly object doesn’t really suit me anymore. I should take it off for now.”
With that, Chi Yu took off the crown, using his hairpin to remove it, and handed it back to Li Xin.
Li Xin felt that Chi Yu was too indifferent to him and to their past lives, which left him somewhat uneasy.
He didn’t want Chi Yu to remember the tragic events of their past life, but he also didn’t want Chi Yu to grow distant from him.
Li Xin gave an awkward smile, placed the crown carefully, and pointed to the jade statue containing the Earth Soul. “Only the Earth Soul has been fully restored. Why don’t you integrate it into your body?”
“Alright,” Chi Yu agreed. “Thank you.”
“But… can you do it?” Li Xin asked uncertainly.
“I’ll try.” Chi Yu walked up to the jade statue. Though he was a ghost officer and had never used the soul integration technique, he understood its essence.
Chi Yu held the jade statue with one hand and formed a seal with the other, closing his eyes and chanting a spell.
After a moment, the Earth Soul slowly floated out of the statue and entered Chi Yu’s body through his arm.
Chi Yu’s complexion alternated between red and pale as he seemed uncomfortable. The separation of the soul and the body was painful, and so was the fusion of the soul.
Thankfully, it was only one soul, and it didn’t take long.
When Chi Yu opened his eyes again, he felt his soul become more solid, his movements stronger, and his spirit much better.
“Is it done?” Li Xin asked, concerned.
Chi Yu nodded, releasing the jade statue. “It’s integrated. And I saw you in the Earth Soul’s memories.”
Li Xin was overjoyed. “Really?”
Chi Yu nodded, but then hesitated, as if unsure whether to speak.
Li Xin, noticing this, hurriedly asked, “You… have something to say?”
“Are we really just brothers?” Chi Yu lowered his head, not saying anything further because he wasn’t sure how to express it.
He had seen in the Earth Soul’s memories that he and Li Xin had shared a bed, acted intimately, and even engaged in many improper acts. It was difficult for him to voice, but now he understood why Li Xin had been so persistent all these years.
The atmosphere grew more awkward, and just then, the doorbell to the hidden chamber rang.
It must have been an urgent matter; otherwise, Chang You and Chang Wu wouldn’t have come to disturb them.
Li Xin opened the door, and Chang You was standing outside. “Master Li, Old Master Liu suddenly showed signs of improvement last night and was moved to the special care ward. But this morning, when Old Master Han went to visit, he suddenly went mad and bit Old Master Liu to death.”
“What?” Li Xin was shocked. “Bite him to death?”
“Old Master Han bites anyone he sees, injuring several people, and then he smashed his own head against a wall. He’s been tied up now, and Mr. Han called for you to come and check on him.”
Chi Yu also found it strange. “Could it be that the female ghost from last night possessed him?”
Li Xin agreed with Chi Yu’s reasoning. “It seems so, but why did he hurt himself after killing Old Master Liu?”
Chi Yu couldn’t make sense of it either. “Maybe we should go and check first.”
“Alright.” Li Xin nodded and instructed Chang You to prepare the car.
As soon as they left the basement, the glaring sunlight hit them. It was noon, the time when the Yang energy is strongest during the day. Although Chi Yu was a ghost official and different from regular spirits, his soul was still fragile and couldn’t tolerate the midday sun well.
He stopped in the shadow of the stairs and didn’t proceed up further. Li Xin noticed he hadn’t followed and quickly realized.
“Senior Brother, the sunlight is strong outside, and you’ve just merged your soul. Your body is weak. It’s better if you wait here at home.”
“It’s fine. Just help me get a black robe to block the light, and cast the light-repelling spell on it,” Chi Yu replied.
Li Xin nodded immediately. Naturally, he wanted Chi Yu to stay by his side.
After preparing everything, they all got into the car and headed to the hospital.
Outside the VIP ward, things were in chaos. The Liu family was crying and shouting for the Han family to pay for the life of Old Master Liu. The Han family members were apologizing and claiming they were innocent. Doctors and nurses were treating the injured, while bodyguards were trying to keep things under control.
The scene was utter chaos.
Li Xin stood in front of Chi Yu, afraid someone might accidentally bump into him.
Han Yu was the first to spot Li Xin and immediately rushed over, grabbing Li Xin’s hand with tears in his eyes, pleading, “Master Li, you have to help me! My father must have been possessed! Please go take a look!”
Li Xin glanced towards Old Master Han.
Old Master Han had silver hair, a slightly chubby build, and his clothes were torn and disheveled. It was unclear whether he had done this himself or if it had happened during a struggle.
He was tied up and unable to move, his eyes bloodshot, and his mouth covered in blood. His face was twisted in pain as he struggled, occasionally letting out heart-wrenching screams.
Two of Han’s bodyguards stood across from him, helplessly watching.
“Did he suddenly become like this?” Li Xin asked.
Han Yu nodded. “Yes, when we arrived, he was fine, and after talking to Uncle Liu for a while, he suddenly went mad. He grabbed Uncle Liu by the neck and bit him. At his age, he needs soft food to chew, but who knew he had the strength to kill Uncle Liu? His bite is so strong, I can’t even compare. Tell me, isn’t this possession? He must have been possessed!”
Han Yu tightly gripped Li Xin’s hand again and pleaded, “Master Li, please help me!”
At this moment, Liu Yan also saw Li Xin, pushed past the nurses, and ran over, pointing at Han Yu and shouting, “Why did you bring this charlatan here? To prove your ridiculous theories?”
She immediately started crying again.
Liu Cheng quickly stepped in and stopped Liu Yan. “Sister, calm down. Dad’s death is unjust, but this is really strange. Since Master Li is here, why don’t we let him take a look? At least we’ll understand what happened.”
Liu Yan slapped Liu Cheng across the face. “What’s there to look at? Isn’t it obvious that it’s that old man from the Han family?”
“Sister, is this normal for Uncle Han?” Liu Cheng held his face and spoke to Liu Yan. “Also, I really… Anyway, I just want to get to the bottom of Dad’s death, so stop causing trouble.”
Liu Yan was furious. “Who are you talking about? You’re such a traitor!”
Liu Cheng ignored her and turned to Li Xin. “Master Li, I’m sorry to make you laugh. This situation is very strange. I saw your abilities yesterday, and I beg you to help us clear this up. We can’t just let Dad die mysteriously like this.”
“Yes, Master Li, please take a look at my father. He must have been possessed,” Han Yu added, agreeing.
Li Xin nodded. “Don’t worry.”
After saying that, he turned back to look at Chi Yu and spoke gently, “Senior Brother, let’s go over and check.”
Chi Yu didn’t say anything but simply nodded and followed Li Xin.
Chang Wu and Chang You walked beside Chi Yu, protecting him from any unwanted disturbances.
When they reached Old Master Han’s side, Chi Yu immediately felt a heavy yin energy coming from him.
He tugged at Li Xin’s sleeve and whispered, “He has a strong aura of resentment and yin energy, just like the female ghost from yesterday. It seems he’s been possessed by her.”
Li Xin nodded. “You’re right, Senior Brother. Moreover, his yang energy is very weak. If we don’t expel this female ghost from his body immediately, he may not survive much longer.”
