Ji Yunzhi was so startled that he took two steps back, rubbing his sore bottom from the fall, and muttered under his breath:
“I’m not an idiot…”
Why did everyone keep calling him an idiot?
Did he really look that stupid?
Chen Qi: “……”
Seeing that Ji Yunzhi wasn’t moving forward anymore, Chen Qi quickly ran back to the car, started the engine, and sped off with a press of the accelerator.
Ji Yunzhi rubbed his sore bottom as he walked toward a corner by the roadside.
Squatting down, he rested his head on his knees and let out a soft sigh.
“Ah, I’m so hungry…”
That afternoon, Ji Yunzhi had been squatting in this exact spot when he saw a couple walk past him.
The guy had said to his girlfriend, “Sweetheart, call me ‘hubby,’ and I’ll promise you anything.”
Next, Ji Yunzhi heard the girl start calling the guy “hubby,” followed by this exchange:
“Hubby, I want hotpot tonight!”
“Sure, hubby will take you!”
“Hubby, I also want that new bag that just came out.”
“Okay, hubby will buy it for you.”
“Hubby, there’s a dress in my shopping cart that I’ve been eyeing for so long—I really want it.”
“Done. Hubby will clear your cart for you tonight!”
“……”
Ji Yunzhi puffed out his cheeks, tilting his head as he thought hard but still couldn’t figure it out. Other people got whatever they wanted just by calling someone “hubby.”
He had just called that good-looking man “hubby” too and said he wanted buns—so why didn’t he buy him any?
At the very least, he could’ve bought him a couple of steamed buns…
Wuwuwu, his stomach was so hungry ┭┮﹏┭┮
That afternoon, he’d finally managed to scavenge half a steamed bun, but he’d even torn off a piece to feed a stray dog.
If only he hadn’t given it to that dog!
Later, that dog found something tasty, held it in its mouth, and ran right past him without sharing!
Bad dog!!!
So mad!!!
…
The next day, Chen Qi drove Mo Xuchen to work. After parking outside the company, he spotted Ji Yunzhi rummaging through a roadside trash bin.
Mo Xuchen followed Chen Qi’s gaze and saw Ji Yunzhi, filthy all over, digging through the garbage. His brows furrowed slightly.
When he saw Ji Yunzhi pull something out of the bin and immediately stuff it into his mouth without hesitation, his fingers twitched at his side.
Glancing at the breakfast Chen Qi was carrying for him, Mo Xuchen motioned with his chin and ordered:
“Give it to him.”
Chen Qi: “???”
Stunned, he pointed at the breakfast in his hand, then at Ji Yunzhi, shooting Mo Xuchen a questioning look.
When Mo Xuchen nodded, Chen Qi’s lips twitched. He strode quickly toward Ji Yunzhi with the breakfast.
If he cares this much, could he really be Mo’s long-lost wife…?
Ji Yunzhi was chewing something, his cheeks puffed out like a hamster’s. When he saw Chen Qi approaching, he recognized him at once.
Still chewing, he eyed Chen Qi warily and took two nervous steps back.
His bottom still hurt—he couldn’t afford another fall.
Chen Qi: “……”
Seems he’s not completely stupid—he still remembers me after a whole night.
“This is from President Mo. Eat this instead.”
Chen Qi handed the breakfast to Ji Yunzhi, who didn’t know who this “President Mo” was, but the moment he heard it was food for him, his eyes lit up as he stared at the bag in Chen Qi’s hand.
Swallowing hard, he glanced at Chen Qi timidly before reaching out and taking two small steps forward.
The second his fingers touched the bag, he immediately clutched it to his chest.
“Th… thank you…”
“Did hubby buy this for me?”
Chen Qi: “……”
Hubby again…
This was a question he absolutely couldn’t answer.
Seeing Mo Xuchen still standing by the car and not daring to keep him waiting, Chen Qi quickly said to Ji Yunzhi:
“Stop digging through trash bins for food. It’s dirty—you’ll get a stomachache.”
With that, Chen Qi turned and walked back toward Mo Xuchen.
“President Mo, I’ve given him the breakfast.”
Mo Xuchen nodded, glancing at Ji Yunzhi in the distance, who was hugging the bag with a bright, beaming smile. Slowly retracting his gaze, he strode briskly into the company.
…
Ji Yunzhi sat on a bench by the roadside and opened the bag Chen Qi had given him.
Inside was a sandwich, a bowl of seafood porridge, and a cup of milk.
The aroma of the breakfast made him swallow repeatedly, his mouth watering.
He took out the sandwich and took a big bite. His round eyes widened slightly, and the delicious taste made his feet wiggle unconsciously.
Between bites, he chanted in his heart: Hubby is so good, hubby is so good!!!
So that’s why hubby didn’t buy him steamed buns yesterday—he was planning to get him something even tastier today!
After finishing the milk and sandwich, Ji Yunzhi rubbed his belly. It still felt so, so empty.
He stared longingly at the bowl of porridge, swallowing hard before forcing himself to look away.
“I can’t eat it—I have to save it for later!”
But his resolve lasted all of two seconds before he turned back, gazing at the porridge and muttering to himself:
“Maybe… just two bites?”
Ji Yunzhi nodded, swallowing again.
“Just two bites. Just to taste it.”
He firmly decided to only eat two bites—but once he started, he couldn’t stop. The entire bowl was gone in a few quick mouthfuls.
“It’s gone…”
Rubbing his still-half-empty stomach, Ji Yunzhi sighed and mumbled quietly:
“Will hubby think I eat too much?”
“Will he stop buying me delicious food next time…?”
Sitting on the bench, he watched the passersby with a lost expression, puffing out his cheeks before slowly lowering his eyes.
All these people seemed to have places to go—but he didn’t know where he belonged.
He couldn’t remember his own name… or where he lived…
…
A moment later, Ji Yunzhi felt someone nudge his foot. He looked up in confusion at the two people standing in front of him.
Blinking, he spoke first: “Hello, can I help you?”
The two exchanged a glance before one of them glared at Ji Yunzhi and roared furiously:
“Stinking beggar, get lost! You’ve dirtied this seat!”
Ji Yunzhi shrank back, quickly scooting to the very edge of the bench. He even wiped the spot where he’d been sitting with his hand and said earnestly:
“I wiped it. It’s not dirty anymore.”
The two: “……”
“Idiot! Get the hell out!”
“If you’re sitting here, where are we supposed to sit?!”
Ji Yunzhi flinched at their yelling and scrambled to his feet. Before running off, he shouted back:
“I’m not an idiot!”
Then, afraid they might hit him, he bolted without looking back.
