Chapter 30 : I Brought My Family With Me
The feeling of having someone leave the light on at home waiting for your return is a kind of spiritual comfort for any person coming home late.
If it’s a soft, little girl, it’s even more healing.
“Are you hungry? I’ll make something for you to eat,” Song Zhiyi said, after making sure that Chen Mo wasn’t injured. She felt it was time for her to do something a wife should do.
“I’ll do it myself.” Chen Mo could tell that the little girl was tired and didn’t want to trouble her. “You go to sleep first.”
“I’m not tired!” Song Zhiyi said, heading straight to the kitchen. “How about noodles?”
“Sure.”
Chen Mo had just come out of the bar and his clothes carried a mixed smell. When he saw Song Zhiyi heading to the kitchen, he grabbed a change of clothes and went to the bathroom.
Chen Mo took a quick shower.
He was done in five minutes and walked into the kitchen, where he saw Song Zhiyi with her long hair tied into a low ponytail, bending over to carefully wash vegetables and tomatoes.
The way she cut vegetables was gentle and non-aggressive, like a real little wife, making a late-night meal for her husband returning home.
Chen Mo watched her for a while before walking over and leaning against the sink.
He saw she had cooked a large pot of noodles. “…”
There probably aren’t bowls big enough at home to hold that much?
“I’m almost done. If you’re hungry, you can have this half cucumber first?” Song Zhiyi offered, noticing him standing next to her. She handed him the leftover cucumber she had chopped.
Chen Mo took it and bit into it. The cucumber was crisp and sweet.
As she served the noodles, Song Zhiyi looked at the full pot of noodles and thought for a moment. She took a small stainless steel bowl, filled it with the leftovers, and also made herself a small bowl.
At the dining table, Chen Mo first glanced at the small bowl in front of him, then looked at Song Zhiyi’s small bowl across the table.
“You finished all the noodles?”
“Yes.”
Chen Mo was large and had a big appetite, usually eating a lot.
So she had boiled the entire bag of noodles.
She also made cucumber salad and vegetable salad, with Chen Mo’s bowl containing vegetables, tomatoes, and three fried eggs.
“…Did I cook too much?”
“You’ll finish it,” he said, smiling.
Indeed, he hadn’t had dinner; he had been on duty since the afternoon.
He picked up his chopsticks and started eating the noodles. After a couple of bites, he saw Song Zhiyi watching him, so he said, “It’s really good.”
Upon hearing that, Song Zhiyi also lowered her head and took small bites of her noodles.
By the time she finished, Chen Mo had already eaten half of his bowl.
“…”
It seems I didn’t cook enough.
Next time… should I cook two bags of noodles?
And maybe buy a large stainless steel bowl from the supermarket!
“When I came back, I saw a police car. It looked pretty urgent. Was the mission dangerous?” Song Zhiyi asked.
“It was fine, just a small drug dealer.” For Chen Mo, this type of mission wasn’t very dangerous.
The drug dealer was just someone who had some connections to acquire drugs and sell them to people who needed them. Basically, he was a middleman, so there wasn’t much threat.
“…”
Another drug dealer.
Four years ago, during a drug bust, Song Qi became a vegetable.
Song Zhiyi had developed a deep psychological and physical aversion to people like that.
“Are you sure you’re not hurt?”
Drug dealers aren’t stupid. They wouldn’t just let themselves be caught without carrying some kind of weapon.
“No, the only one hurt during the operation was Nanzai.”
“Ah? Is he okay? Did you send him to the hospital?” Song Zhiyi became worried when she heard someone had been injured.
“He’s been sent to the K9 base.”
The K9 base has a special hospital and the best veterinarians. Police dogs undergo strict annual physical exams to ensure they are healthy.
“?” Song Zhiyi processed his words, “…Nanzai is a police dog?”
“Yes.”
Chen Mo chuckled softly. The little expression on her face when she was surprised was really cute.
If a police dog was injured, it could be considered an attack on the police!
“Can I go visit him?” Song Zhiyi had great respect for the police dogs who protected the officers’ safety.
“It’s not easy to get into the base.”
“Even family members can’t enter?”
“Family members…” Chen Mo nodded, a smile deepening at the corner of his lips. “Of course, they can. I’m going to the base tomorrow to handle Nanzai’s retirement paperwork.”
While they were talking, Chen Mo finished the rest of his noodles, cucumber salad, and vegetables.
His appetite was really good!
He didn’t let her do the dishes, though. He placed the empty bowls into the small basin and took them to the kitchen.
Song Zhiyi knew she couldn’t win against him. After brushing her teeth, she went back to the bedroom.
…
The next morning.
Even though Chen Mo came back late last night after a mission, he still managed to wake up at 6 AM the next day.
He spent an hour working out in the gym before leisurely making breakfast.
Song Zhiyi could always enjoy a warm breakfast right after getting up.
The two of them went to the police dog management base together.
Most of the police dogs were German Shepherds, and there were specialized trainers working with them. Some people were also feeding the newly born puppies.
“The puppies are so cute!” Song Zhiyi stood by the fence, watching the puppies wag their tails and wobble over, licking her fingers through the wire mesh.
“Ah… Captain Chen?” A trainer jogged over, ready to catch the ‘escapee’ dog and bring it back, but stopped when he saw the tall man standing outside the fence.
A little girl was crouching next to him, playing with the puppies.
The trainer stared at the girl, then looked at Captain Chen.
Trainer: “???”
Is this really Captain Chen?
“Captain Chen, what brings you here?” The trainer first saluted Chen Mo, then cautiously asked.
“I brought my family to see Nanzai.”
Family?!!
Wow!
Captain Chen brought his little niece to see the police dogs?
But…
This little niece is quite pretty!
Wait until I go back and gossip with my friends, heh heh~
“Let’s go.” Chen Mo motioned for Song Zhiyi to leave.
“Oh…” Song Zhiyi watched as the trainer took the puppy away, then followed Chen Mo.
The police dog hospital was located on the south side of the base, a large area that made it convenient for the dogs to recover.
“Captain Chen, did you come to see Nanzai?” A veterinarian wearing a white coat saw Chen Mo enter and immediately stood up.
“Yes, how is it?”
“The wound was a bit deep, but luckily it didn’t hit the bone. It’s just that it’s a bit older, so the recovery will take longer.”
The veterinarian spoke and led them to a room.
Nanzai was a 6-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd. Its right hind leg was wrapped in bandages, and it was lying on a small bed resting. When it heard the door open, Nanzai perked up its ears and looked toward the door.
When it saw Chen Mo, it wagged its tail and limped over.
Chen Mo squatted down, patted its big head, and let Song Zhiyi pet it too.
“It doesn’t bite.”
“…” Even though it was said not to bite, it was still a big German Shepherd.
Song Zhiyi crouched next to Chen Mo, cautiously extending her hand to pet Nanzai’s head.
Nanzai sat still, letting her pet it obediently.
Seeing that it really didn’t bite, Song Zhiyi felt much more at ease.
“Dr. Lu, starting today, we will begin the retirement procedures for Nanzai,” Chen Mo said to the veterinarian.
“…Oh, okay.”
The veterinarian had been listening in, especially since Chen Mo brought this girl along, and she was speaking so gently—it was quite rare!
She seemed young…
A high school student?
At most a university student!
Could she be Captain Chen’s little niece?
“I heard that retired police dogs can be adopted,” Song Zhiyi turned to Chen Mo and asked, “Can our family adopt it?”
“Yes.”
Veterinarian: (°Д°)
Whose family?
Chen Mo told Song Zhiyi to stay here while he went out to handle the retirement and adoption procedures for Nanzai.
“Wait, wait! Captain Chen… Is the girl adopting it, or is it you?” The veterinarian followed Chen Mo, still stunned.
“It’s us.”
“You… us?”
The veterinarian had an inkling about the relationship between the girl and Captain Chen!
“What’s wrong? My wife wants to adopt Nanzai. Is that a problem?”
“!!!”
The focus isn’t on adoption!
When did you get married?
