Catastrophe Descends: I Scavenge in the Dungeon Chapter 33: Picking Up Rides

Ji He stopped overthinking and focused on working inside her space.

Over time, the animals in the space had grown significantly, all looking healthy and full of energy. As soon as they saw Ji He, they eagerly gathered around, waiting to be fed.

Seeing how much bigger they had gotten, Ji He nodded in satisfaction.

At this rate, they’d be fully grown in about half a year.

The first batch of livestock needed to be kept for breeding, so she was still far from having an unlimited meat supply. But since she had enough food for now, she wasn’t in a rush.

After taking care of the animals, Ji He collected their manure and set it aside to ferment into fertilizer.

The crops she had planted were all easy-to-grow grains, and by now, they had sprouted quite well. Ji He bent down to pick some sweet potato leaves.

They were still tender, so she gathered a bunch to store for later use as vegetables.

Besides the livestock, the seafood in the fresh and saltwater areas was thriving too.

She had to feed them multiple times a day now, or they wouldn’t get enough to eat.

Watching them swim energetically in the water put Ji He in a great mood.

This space was truly a treasure—after all this time, not a single one had died. They were all alive and well.

After finishing all the farm work, Ji He checked the time—it was already 4:30 PM.

Not wanting to waste her space’s time limit, she immediately teleported out.

The moment she reappeared, it felt like she had jumped into a steaming pot.

It was even more stifling than before, making it difficult to breathe, as if something was pressing down on her chest.

Sweat instantly formed on her forehead.

Ji He carefully crawled out from under the table, making sure not to make a sound, and began sneaking down the stairs.

The worst heat of the day was passing—was it time to head home?

Just as she reached the third floor, she heard police sirens growing louder.

The police were here?

Ji He’s eyes lit up, and she quickly ran to the second-floor stairwell, yanking at the door.

She got lucky—it wasn’t locked.

She hurried down the stairs and into the mall.

By now, quite a few people were sitting on the second floor. They had also heard the sirens and were making their way down the escalators.

Many of them carried large bags, clearly looted from the supermarket.

Ji He blended in with the crowd, completely unremarkable.

Once she reached the escalator, she finally saw what the first floor looked like.

It was far more crowded than the second floor.

Most people had gathered there, even filling the stores, each guarding their supplies warily.

Hearing the police sirens, those carrying stolen goods instinctively tensed, glancing around nervously.

Some gritted their teeth and made a run for it before the police completely surrounded the mall, dashing home with their loot.

Seeing the first runner, many others followed suit, all carrying supplies.

By then, the police had stopped their cars at the entrance.

Several officers rushed to the doors, shouting, “Stop and submit to inspection!”

“Don’t run! You might get hurt!”

But no one listened—especially those who had stolen goods. Seeing armed officers only made them flee even faster.

If they got caught, their loot would be confiscated.

It wasn’t that they had no money—it was the fear of not being able to buy anything at all!

Ji He was also being pushed toward the exit by the crowd.

The police were shouting through megaphones, but the sheer number of people storming out made them powerless.

The moment Ji He stepped outside, she felt like she had walked into an oven. It was different from the sauna-like heat indoors.

The sunlight wasn’t as scorching as at noon, but the temperature was still unbearably high.

Like stepping into a giant baking tray.

Ji He hopped onto her tricycle and headed home.

Luckily, there weren’t too many cars on the road, making her ride relatively smooth.

On the way, she saw several vehicles parked outside supermarkets, with people frantically loading them with supplies.

Like they were free for the taking.

After riding for a while, Ji He started struggling to breathe, her chest feeling tight.

She knew it was because of the heat.

She pulled over under the shade of a tree, gulping down half a bottle of water before feeling slightly better. Then, she continued riding home.

Thank goodness her tricycle was electric—otherwise, she would’ve suffered even more.

On the way back, she stopped by the delivery station.

There weren’t any large supermarkets in her area, and the game players weren’t interested in the small grocery stores nearby, so things were still relatively calm.

The delivery station was still operating, with many people picking up their packages.

Some even asked the owner to deliver their parcels for them.

The owner was agreeable and promised to send them out in the evening once he had time.

Ji He couldn’t wait that long. She loaded her packages onto her tricycle and made a few trips to get them all.

Seeing that she had a vehicle, some people asked her to help deliver their packages too.

Ji He thought for a moment. “In this heat, it’s brutal out here. If you’re willing to pay me five packs of snacks or instant noodles, I’ll deliver them for you.”

It was only the first day of extreme heat, and many people hadn’t adjusted their mindset yet.

They readily agreed to the five-pack delivery fee.

Ji He first took her own packages home, then returned to the delivery station to start her side gig.

People were getting spoiled already.

The heat was unbearable, and they didn’t even want to walk a little.

Seeing Ji He offering rides, more people approached her, asking if she could take them home too—offering the same five packs of snacks as payment.

Ji He had no reason to refuse and accepted every request.

One older woman even started chatting with her while riding.

Ji He didn’t hide anything and replied straightforwardly, “The rice at home got infested with bugs, so I had nothing to eat tonight. I was supposed to go buy some at the supermarket, but I didn’t have the money. So I figured I’d pick up some rides and earn a few packs of instant noodles—at least enough to last me a few days, so I don’t starve.”

“Oh dear, oh dear, such a hardworking young girl!”

“She’s pitiful, really. My good-for-nothing son should see this—maybe then he’d stop wasting food!”

Ji He only had to say a few words before the elderly women took over the conversation among themselves.

She enjoyed the peace and focused on driving.

With so many kind-hearted people around, seeing her sweating profusely while pedaling, they even gave her extra food.

By the end of the night, she had brought home:

  • 30 packs of instant noodles
  • 15 bags of potato chips
  • 5 packs of sausages
  • 1 pack of 350g sunflower seeds
  • 2 cases of drinks
  • 10 packs of pickled vegetables
  • 5 pieces of frozen meat
