The room was dark. After both had showered, Qiao Anchen quickly fell asleep, holding Chu Yi from behind, his warm body pressed against hers, wrapping her in his embrace.
Chu Yi was actually very tired too. She turned her face to look out the window, her long hair scattered on the pillow, her hands curled up by her cheeks.
The gauze curtains on the balcony fluttered in the night breeze, and the lights in the distance twinkled in the darkness.
She blinked slowly, feeling exhausted as she drifted into sleep.
On the last day of the holiday, many people had already returned to work. After staying at home for a few days, Chu Yi couldn’t stand it anymore and tentatively suggested to Qiao Anchen,
“Today, the crowd shouldn’t be too bad. How about we take a walk around Lushui Island? It would be nice to go out for a stroll.”
“Sure.” Qiao Anchen agreed without hesitation.
Although Lushui Island is called that, it’s actually just a scenic spot in Lancheng, a place where locals often go for leisure and entertainment. There are even fireworks displays on special occasions.
Chu Yi immediately brightened up and said excitedly, “Then I’ll go change, and we can leave soon!”
The weather in Lancheng in October was just right, neither too cold nor too hot. The sunlight was bright and gentle, the trees were green, and the flowers were in full bloom. People rode small electric scooters, and fruit vendors lined the streets, creating a scene that was both chaotic and harmonious.
Chu Yi wore a mint-green cardigan, a beige A-line cotton skirt that elongated her figure, making her waist look slim and her legs long. She paired it with canvas shoes and a small crossbody bag.
To match her outing look, she even wore a khaki fisherman’s hat. When she smiled, she looked like a recent college graduate—youthful and cute.
In contrast, Qiao Anchen looked much more composed, wearing a camel-colored thin sweater over a white T-shirt and casual trousers.
His face was almost too good-looking, and if it weren’t for his calm demeanor, people might mistake him for someone who had just left school.
Chu Yi clung to his arm, bouncing along the way as if she had been cooped up for a long time and was finally free to wander.
She was curious about everything, her eyes wide as she took it all in. Qiao Anchen had to keep an eye on her as they walked, making sure she didn’t accidentally bump into people.
“Careful, there’s a wall ahead—” Qiao Anchen quickly pulled her back, steering her in the right direction, feeling both amused and helpless.
“Wow, the little trinkets in that store are so cute.” Chu Yi reluctantly tore her gaze away, muttering to herself.
“Do you want to check it out when we come back?” Qiao Anchen asked casually, still looking ahead, but Chu Yi shook her head.
“Sigh, forget it. I don’t wear accessories often, and if I buy them, they’ll just sit at home.”
A look of confusion flashed across Qiao Anchen’s face, but he quickly brushed it off, pressing his lips together without saying anything.
Even though it was the last day of the holiday, there were still quite a few people outside. Lushui Island was full of tourists, and Chu Yi and Qiao Anchen wandered aimlessly. By the time they reached the central fountain, the sky had already darkened.
The colorful fountain rose and fell with the music, shooting several meters high. There were many exclamations from the crowd, mostly from girls. Chu Yi was drawn by the noise and turned her head just in time to see a girl jump into her boyfriend’s arms, seemingly frightened.
“Ah, the water splashed on my face~” she said coquettishly, looking up and pouting at the boy holding her.
“Where? Let me wipe it off for you.” The boy smiled as he looked down at her, his eyes full of warmth as he reached out to gently wipe her face.
“Here, there’s more here too—” The girl stood on tiptoe, bringing her face closer, her lips curving into a smile as she neared the boy’s lips.
Their eyes met, and without much thought, the boy lowered his head and kissed her.
His voice was as soft as water.
“Okay, it’s all gone now.”
Chu Yi watched the entire scene in silence: “…”
She couldn’t help but rub her arms, feeling a bit chilly.
“What’s wrong? Are you cold?” Qiao Anchen noticed her movement and frowned slightly.
“Let’s head back if it’s cold; there’s really nothing much to see here anyway.”
… It’s true, comparisons can be painful.
Chu Yi quietly lowered her hand, shook her head, and forced a smile.
“No, I’m not cold. I still want to watch the fireworks show later.”
As night fell, more and more people gathered. On their way to the best spot to view the fireworks, it became so crowded that they were practically shoulder to shoulder. Throughout the entire time, Qiao Anchen’s brows never relaxed. He started by holding her hand, but eventually, he half-embraced Chu Yi to protect her from being jostled by others.
“Why is everyone so free?” He seemed genuinely puzzled.
“If they spent this time working, they could avoid a lot of trouble.”
Chu Yi finally found the perfect opportunity to share her thoughts. She looked up at Qiao Anchen, earnestly advising him.
“Work isn’t everything in life. Not everyone sees work as just a routine task like you do. For most people, myself included, we’d much rather come out and enjoy the fireworks than work.”
Qiao Anchen was silent for a moment before replying, “Alright.”
“Even though I don’t understand your perspective, I can keep my thoughts to myself.”
After that, he didn’t say another word. Chu Yi followed beside him with her head down, realizing for the first time that trying to reason with someone who works in law is futile because he can leave you speechless with just one sentence.
