At this moment, Qiao Lu stretched her neck as far as it could go, peeking endlessly into the kitchen, her eyes filled with impatience.
Xiao Wen, sitting nearby, shook her head at the sight, silently thinking, ‘This girl acts like she’s never had a proper meal before.’
Not long after, Qin Feng emerged, carrying two plates of Kung Pao Chicken and placing them in front of them.
“This is amazing—absolutely delicious!”
Qiao Lu didn’t hesitate, diving in immediately with a look of sheer bliss on her face.
Xiao Wen glanced at the dish. The bright colors and layered presentation were incredibly appetizing, with peanuts and chicken pieces all coated in a rich, glossy sauce. It looked absolutely irresistible.
Curious, she picked up her chopsticks, grabbed a piece of chicken, and popped it into her mouth. The moment the flavor hit her taste buds, she froze.
“What’s wrong? Doesn’t suit your taste? If not, just hand it over to me!”
Seeing her friend frozen, Qiao Lu assumed Xiao Wen didn’t like it and reached out to take her plate.
“Wait, wait! I haven’t even figured out all the flavors yet. Let me try again!”
Without waiting for an answer, Xiao Wen grabbed her plate of Kung Pao Chicken and started devouring it, completely abandoning any pretense of maintaining a ladylike image.
Five minutes later, the plate was spotless. Xiao Wen wiped her mouth and gave Qin Feng a big thumbs up. “Boss, this dish is incredible. It’s absolutely out of this world!”
“Thanks for the compliment,” Qin Feng replied with a small smile. Kung Pao Chicken was famous worldwide for a reason—its allure was simply unbeatable.
“Boss, tomorrow I’ll bring my coworkers to support your business!”
Xiao Wen finally understood why Qiao Lu had been so insistent on recommending this place. It was a culinary treasure trove!
As he cleared the plates, Qin Feng said, “Tomorrow, I’ll be making a soup dish to serve a special guest. The restaurant won’t be open for regular business. But if you’re free tomorrow night, feel free to drop by and try it—on the house.”
“Free! Absolutely free!”
The two women nodded enthusiastically without a second thought.
At 7 p.m., Qin Feng closed the restaurant right on time. He had earned 300 yuan that day, which wasn’t bad for a start.
Afterward, he called Xu Fei, letting her know he’d be busy tomorrow and asking if Nan Nan could stay at her place another day.
“I want Daddy! I want Daddy!”
Hearing Nan Nan’s little voice over the phone tugged at Qin Feng’s heartstrings, so he decided to visit them.
“We’re eating at Sunshine Restaurant. Come over,” Xu Fei said before promptly hanging up. Qin Feng shook his head with a wry smile and made his way over.
When he arrived at the restaurant, he saw Xu Fei holding Nan Nan, who was happily eating, with a young man sitting across from them.
“Daddy!”
The moment Nan Nan saw him, she jumped into his arms.
“My sweet girl, have you been listening to Mommy?”
Qin Feng hugged her tightly, his eyes brimming with affection.
“Nan Nan’s been such a good girl! You can ask Mommy if you don’t believe me,” Nan Nan said, looking proud and obedient.
“Good, very good,” Qin Feng praised, then took a seat as Xu Fei gestured toward the chair and introduced the two men.
“This is my friend Wang Qiang. And this is my husband, Qin Feng.”
Qin Feng nodded slightly in acknowledgment before sitting down with Nan Nan in his lap.
Wang Qiang, sizing up Qin Feng, couldn’t help feeling disdainful. ‘How did a guy like this land someone as stunning as Xu Fei?’ Deciding to put Qin Feng in his place, Wang Qiang poured a glass of red wine for him. “Brother Qin, how about you taste this wine and share your thoughts?”
Qin Feng immediately saw through his intentions. Tasting wine was considered a refined activity for the elite—not something the average person could do well. But for a world-class chef like Qin Feng, evaluating wine was a piece of cake.
Xu Fei, knowing Wang Qiang’s motives, felt a pang of worry. She was aware that Qin Feng knew nothing about wine tasting. Even though their relationship had grown distant, she didn’t want to see him embarrassed.
But before she could change the subject, Qin Feng casually lifted the glass, gave it a gentle swirl, sniffed it twice, and took a small sip. His every move was so natural and practiced that even Xu Fei was taken aback.
Wang Qiang’s heart sank. He had spent a lot of effort investigating Qin Feng and was sure he didn’t know a thing about wine. ‘Is this guy playing dumb? Even if he doesn’t know wine, he sure knows how to fake it!’
“This is Romanée-Conti, a red wine that’s pretty good but not perfect. It’s made from second-tier grapes that didn’t receive enough sunlight, which affects the sweetness of the wine,” Qin Feng commented after savoring the taste.
“That’s impossible! This wine costs 60 to 70 thousand yuan a bottle! It’s a premium brand—how could there be any issue?”
Wang Qiang was flustered. While he loved wine and knew a fair bit about it, his palate wasn’t nearly refined enough to pick up on such details. And Qin Feng hadn’t even glanced at the bottle before naming it.
“If you don’t believe me, you can ask the waiter if they have a higher-grade version of this wine. Then you’ll know.”
Qin Feng spoke as he glanced at Xu Fei. It was the first time he truly noticed how beautiful his wife was. Her skin was radiant, soft enough to seem like it could be pinched for water.
Xu Fei caught his lingering gaze, and a sense of surprise stirred within her. It had been ages since he’d looked at her like this—eyes brimming with passion, just like when they were young and in love during college.
Unconvinced, Wang Qiang summoned the waiter and pointed to the bottle. “Do you have a more expensive version of this wine?”
“Certainly, sir. We have an even more exclusive top-tier Romanée-Conti. Would you like me to bring it out?”
The waiter replied with a professional smile.
“No need,” Wang Qiang muttered, waving her away. His face darkened as he turned to Qin Feng. “Brother Qin, what line of work are you in these days?”
Qin Feng shrugged lightly, smiling. “I’m a free spirit—I do whatever I feel like. Just enjoying life.”
“How poetic, Brother Qin.”
Though Wang Qiang’s face remained polite, his heart was full of scorn. ‘What a roundabout way of saying you’re unemployed. Quit pretending to be so carefree.’
Before long, dinner was over, and it was time to settle the bill.
“Waiter!”
Simultaneously, both Qin Feng and Wang Qiang raised their hands.
Wang Qiang intended to foot the bill to show off. Seeing Qin Feng’s gesture as well, he assumed Qin Feng wanted to pay and said, “Brother Qin, let me cover this. It’s not a cheap meal, you know.”
“Go ahead. I just wanted to ask the waiter where the restroom is.”
Qin Feng stood up and followed the waiter without a second thought, leaving Wang Qiang momentarily speechless. His face twitched as he fumed internally. ‘What a shameless guy—not even trying to act like a man!’
