Chapter 6
The next night, inside the dilapidated house.
The flame of the kerosene lamp flickered.
Shen Xiaoman’s weak figure was reflected on the wall.
At this moment, he was curled up on the kang and coughing heart-wrenchingly.
The sputum he had just coughed up in the spittoon was tinged with blood.
Shen Nanxing didn’t dare to use the box of special military medicine given by Lu Zhanye.
Because in the original book, Shen Xiaoman’s death was accelerated by the injection of fake streptomycin.
When Shen Nanxing rubbed the last piece of mugwort into the old newspaper and lit it…
From outside the door came the crunching sound of military boots stepping on the snow.
The sound came from far away.
Just then, Lu Zhanye lifted the straw curtain and walked into the house.
“It’s really haunting!”
She was busy rubbing the Hegu point on Shen Xiaoman’s palm to relieve his cough.
Under the kerosene lamplight, the purple marks on her wrists were particularly obvious.
That was caused by him using too much force in the medicine store last night.
Looking at the pale, bony hands with slender fingers, Lu Zhanye couldn’t help but frown.
“Here you go, special brown sugar to replenish your blood.”
A tin can wrapped in red five-star paper was thrown on the edge of the kang with a “clang”.
Shen Nanxing smiled coldly, picked up the can and smashed it against the wall without saying a word.
“Didn’t Captain Lu say I was a medicine thief?”
I saw dark red sugar grains flowing down the earth wall.
“What a pity…after not seeing you for so many years, you’ve actually developed a stubborn temper.”
Lu Zhanye sighed and said.
He stepped over the candy at his feet and bent down to pick up the spittoon on the ground:
“Coughing up blood for three days, moxibustion alone is useless!
Why don’t you use the medicine I gave you?”
Lu Zhanye casually threw the enamel spittoon to the ground.
Shen Xiaoman was so frightened that she gasped even more heavily and kept shrinking into the kang.
Shen Nanxing looked at Lu Zhanye unhappily.
This man always does things that are inconsistent with his character in the original novel and that make her feel puzzled.
Just think of him as a ruthless executioner.
Shen Nanxing had no sympathy for the gunshot wound on his waist.
“What do you want? Stay away from my sister and brother.”
Shen Nanxing didn’t want to be captured by Lu Zhanye like this.
She picked up the broken porcelain pieces on the ground to defend herself, but accidentally cut her palm.
Oh no, the last piece of gauze was used by Shen Xiaoman as a handkerchief for coughing up blood.
She could only pull back her bleeding hand and pinch it with the corner of her clothes to stop the bleeding.
This action made Lu Zhanye feel inexplicably disgusted.
“Why are you showing off in front of me?”
He walked forward and pulled Shen Nanxing’s bleeding hand hidden under the corner of his clothes.
Then he took out a bandage from the secret pocket of his belt.
Shen Nanxing didn’t appreciate it and wanted to pull his hand back.
“Don’t you think my brother died quickly enough? Wasn’t it enough to poison seventeen people with the fake medicine you destroyed?”
Lu Zhanye looked at the little woman in front of him with some surprise.
It seems that she hasn’t forgotten what happened in the past.
“You… remember this?”
Shen Nanxing didn’t say anything further.
Should I tell Lu Zhanye that according to the plot in the original book, my brother will be killed by him with a shot of fake medicine in a few days?
A month later, he will shoot me to death?
No, she wasn’t stupid enough to alert the enemy.
Lu Zhanye looked at Shen Nanxing’s disdainful expression.
He pulled open the hem of his uniform, revealing the scars on his waist.
“Look at this before you yell! I was a victim too, seven years ago.”
Is he reminding Shen Nanxing that he is someone who can be trusted?
The kerosene lamp on the kang suddenly burst into sparks.
Shen Nanxing was in a trance and saw the scene in the original novel where Lu Zhanye shot himself and then he fell into the snow coughing up blood.
No, why is the current plot different from what I saw in the original book?
Or is it that the latter half, wet with tea, is the truth that she is not aware of?
What is the ending? What is the truth?
“There’s something at the bottom of the brown sugar jar. Don’t waste it.”
Lu Zhanye said this and left without looking back.
Shen Nanxing only came to his senses after he left.
She pried open the bottom of the can with the chipped porcelain shard.
I saw three unopened tubes of streptomycin wrapped in yellowed oil paper, and the red military supply seal on the wax seal still had body temperature.
Three more doses, Lu Zhanye delivered medicine to his brother again.
Shen Xiaoman started coughing again.
In the smoke from the burning moxa stick, Shen Nanxing seemed to see memories that did not belong to him:
In the original novel, Shen Nanxing huddled in the corner of the prison, and Lu Zhanye threw a piece of fruit candy in through the iron bars.
“Eat a piece of candy to help relieve the pain.”
The voice outside the window sounded younger than it is now, “Your brother’s lungs…”
“What happened to my brother…”
The scene was interrupted by Shen Xiaoman’s cough.
Shen Nanxing came back to his senses and touched his hot forehead.
“Xiaoman, I’ll take you to the hospital!”
Shen Nanxing carried his brother on his back and ran towards the hospital.
Most of the red paint on the brick wall of the military hospital, which says “Serve the People,” has peeled off and has not been repaired yet.
Shen Nanxing rushed into the emergency room carrying Shen Xiaoman on his back.
The nurse on the morning shift was sitting with her butt sticking out, eating melon seeds and reading the entertainment magazine “Popular Movies”.
Because she was a newly admitted intern, almost no one in the hospital’s medical staff knew her.
“Emergency, nurse, I’m in the emergency room.”
“Those who are registering should fill out the form first!”
The nurse on duty picked up the pen slowly.
“Name? Ingredients?”
Shen Xiaoman curled up on the bench and kept coughing.
“Shen Nanxing, no, no, Shen Xiaoman.”
Shen Nanxing clenched her hands, she was a little nervous.
Seeing the nurse filling in the ingredient column on the registration form, she hesitated…
“Military dependents… We are military dependents!”
My father has been a military doctor all his life and saved the lives of countless soldiers on the front lines.
Even though his death has not yet been determined, they are still considered military dependents, right?
“Shen Nanxing?
Are you a military dependent?
Can you take out your military ID and let me see it?
Does that also count if you’re divorced?”
The nurse’s words hurt Shen Nanxing.
“I…I didn’t…”
She raised her eyes and looked in the direction the nurse pointed.
I saw a copy of Shen Nanxing’s divorce notice posted on the notice board at the gate.
Li Dazhuang’s crooked signature on it is disgusting.
Shen Nanxing stepped forward and tore down the notice.
At this moment, she felt powerless and helpless.
She didn’t expect that her father had saved so many soldiers.
But now it was the 1980s, and my brother’s need for life-saving medicine became a problem.
Even her divorce had to be made public and announced to the world.
At this moment, Shen Nanxing just wanted to find a crack in the ground to crawl into.
“Make way!”
Another stretcher brushed past Shen Xiaoman’s knees.
A doctor in a white coat with a side pocket brushed past them.
“Director Wang’s relative has acute appendicitis! Everyone, make way.”
Shen Nanxing recognized that it was Deputy Director Liu of the Pharmacy Department.
The pockets of his white coat were bulging with specially supplied sugar.
It was the same one that Lu Zhanye gave her last night.
“Doctor Liu! My brother needs streptomycin!”
Shen Nanxing grabbed Deputy Director Liu’s clothes and begged him.
Looking at Shen Nanxing’s dress, Deputy Director Liu shook off her hand.
Still didn’t stop working on the task at hand.
He wiped the needle with a cotton ball and said:
“A divorced woman with a sickly child is unlucky! And she’s pretending to be a military dependent?”
As soon as he finished speaking, laughter came from the injection room.
Several nurses also imitated Shen Xiaoman’s cough.
“Do you still act like a doctor?”
Shen Nanxing’s eyes were filled with tears at this moment.
