Chapter 1
“Who goes there? State your name!”
“Leng Xue.”
Leng Xue had barely spoken her name when the already chilling atmosphere of the Palace of Yama dropped another ten degrees.
Even the Judge standing beside King Yama shivered.
At the highest seat in the grand hall, King Yama opened the Book of Life and Death. Upon seeing Leng Xue’s cause of death, he couldn’t help but twitch the corner of his mouth.
Her method of death… was utterly explosive—even in the underworld!
King Yama gave a tactical cough. “Ahem… you died from laughter? What was so funny?”
Since Leng Xue had a request, she explained the events in detail.
“Your Majesty, I came from the apocalypse. My biological parents, in order to save their precious son…”
Leng Xue’s face twisted with pain. “They pushed me into a horde of zombies. It was my fiancé, Gu Beilu, who traded his life to save mine.”
As she recalled the memory, her eyes turned misty.
Back then, neither she nor Gu Beilu had awakened any powers. They were just ordinary people.
To save her, Gu Beilu let himself bleed to lure the zombies away.
In the end, Leng Xue was rescued, and she watched helplessly as Gu Beilu was torn apart by zombies.
“I killed them all. I avenged Gu Beilu. I laughed too hard from the joy… couldn’t catch my breath… and died.”
Leng Xue looked up at the sky, trying to hold back the tears threatening to fall.
After Gu Beilu’s death, she was overwhelmed with grief and consumed by vengeance.
Her obsession must have run deep, for she awakened a powerful dual-S-rank ice ability.
Leng Xue used it to kill her parents—who had abused her since childhood—and her brother, who planned to sell her.
And of course, she didn’t let the zombies that tore Gu Beilu apart go unpunished either.
She froze them all into popsicles and then shattered them into dust.
After killing the last zombie, Leng Xue threw her head back and laughed. Then she secretly used her powers to freeze all her internal organs and her blood flow—
Her bodily functions stopped, and she died of multi-organ failure.
Yes, that was Leng Xue’s real cause of death.
She only pretended to have died from laughter because she feared those who took their own lives couldn’t reincarnate and would be condemned to the Eighteen Levels of Hell.
She wasn’t afraid of Hell’s suffering—but she was afraid of never being reborn and never seeing Gu Beilu again.
“Hm, I suppose that’s a loyal and passionate heart,” King Yama nodded.
“So what brings you here today?”
Leng Xue had refused to drink the soup of forgetfulness and insisted on seeing King Yama.
The underworld now respected ghosts more and ran things more humanely, so she was escorted to the palace.
“I want to go to the world where Gu Beilu was reincarnated,” Leng Xue explained her purpose.
King Yama turned, and the Judge knowingly brought out the latest Huami tablet to check.
“Your Majesty, Gu Beilu is now 22 years old. The world he lives in is currently the year 1979.”
Leng Xue was startled. Due to the time difference between the human realm and the underworld, she was late—despite rushing.
Sure enough, King Yama’s next words were:
“Even if you reincarnate right now, Leng Xue, you’ll be 22 years younger than him. By the time you grow up, he might already be married. Why not be reborn into a family related to his? At least that way, you’ll still see him often.”
Gu Beilu had drunk the soup of forgetfulness, erasing all his past memories. In the traditional 70s and 80s, he would surely get married.
No way!
Leng Xue shook her head. She wasn’t generous enough to give up the man she loved.
And she definitely couldn’t stand by and watch her soulmate marry someone else and have children!
“Your Majesty, please, for the sake of the zombies I destroyed, let me go directly to Gu Beilu’s world!”
Leng Xue was currently 18—just four years younger than Gu Beilu. The age gap was perfect.
“Leng Xue,” King Yama’s brow furrowed. “Out of gratitude for saving a world from zombies, I already bent the rules to let you choose your next life. And now you want to directly transmigrate?”
The mighty King Yama’s already fearsome face became even more terrifying.
“What, do you think the underworld is your personal playground?”
Just as he finished speaking, the Judge holding the tablet suddenly trembled.
He cautiously approached King Yama and whispered, “Your Majesty… the underworld actually is her family’s business.”
Then he turned the tablet toward Yama, pointing to a family portrait in the data.
King Yama squinted—and instantly stood up in shock.
He glared at the Judge, “Why didn’t you say so earlier?!”
The Judge was innocent—he’d only just seen it!
King Yama rushed over to Leng Xue, thinking: good thing he didn’t make her kneel just now…
“Leng Xue, in light of your… uh…”
cough cough cough
Before he could finish, the Judge quickly interrupted with a fake cough, then leaned in and whispered, “Lady Houtu just sent a divine message: don’t reveal Leng Xue’s true identity for now.”
Lady Houtu’s exact words were:
“Let the child gain more worldly experience. She’ll need it when she inherits my role.”
King Yama’s body shivered. He hurriedly changed his words. If he went against Lady Houtu’s will, he’d be done for.
“In light of your role in saving the post-apocalyptic world, I’ll grant your request and send you directly to Gu Beilu’s world. But every world has its laws. You can’t just appear out of nowhere. You’ll have to take the place of someone who just died.”
Leng Xue didn’t understand why King Yama had suddenly changed his attitude, but she didn’t care—as long as she could reach Gu Beilu’s world.
She nodded. “Okay. Will my appearance need to change?”
Now that he was closer, King Yama finally noticed Leng Xue’s face.
So flawless it was like a showcase of Nüwa’s divine skill. Wait—not like, it was.
Lady Nüwa was her grandmother!
Even when Leng Xue was still in the womb, Nüwa had molded her features through her mother’s belly—creating the most perfect appearance in heaven and earth.
After her birth, she was bathed in divine nectar for three days and nights. Her skin was snow-pure, without a single blemish.
“No, no, no need!” King Yama quickly waved his hands. He wouldn’t dare touch even a strand of Nüwa’s masterpiece.
“I’ll retrieve the body of Leng Zhaodi, and you’ll transmigrate directly into it. I’ll use a deception spell so everyone who knew her will believe she always looked like you.”
From thousands of newly departed souls, Yama selected an 18-year-old girl surnamed Leng who had the chance to cross paths with Gu Beilu.
“This is Leng Zhaodi’s memory—hurry up and absorb it. If you don’t wake up soon, she’ll be buried.”
King Yama conjured a red glowing orb in his palm and gently pressed it to Leng Xue’s forehead, then waved his hand.
“Go. I’m also sending you a spiritual spring space—it can grow crops, contains endless supplies, and most importantly, can save your beloved.”
Leng Xue didn’t dwell on why King Yama suddenly treated her so well. Her focus was on his last sentence—
Gu Beilu is in danger?!
He actually needs the spiritual spring to survive?
Could he already be critically ill?
