Chapter 58: Paternity Testing Exists Abroad
Ye Bingyu was at a loss for words.
Just listen to what they were saying—
Feudal, superstitious, backward.
What era was this? And they were still talking about Taoist priests, the Doom Star? No wonder they could never compare to Western countries.
Lin Wangsheng and Bihua always sang the same tune. As soon as Bihua finished speaking, Lin Wangsheng picked up where she left off.
“Your mother is right. The Zhang family is no good—they’re nothing but trouble. You said to ‘deal with’ that wretched girl, but that’s obviously unrealistic. She’s a living, breathing person; we can’t just make her disappear. And murder? That’s illegal. We’re law-abiding citizens—we can’t do that. This is the only way.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
“Well…” Bihua patiently explained, “We figured the fewer people who knew about this, the better. That’s why we didn’t tell you.”
“Exactly. We were afraid you might let something slip.”
“Fine, fine.” Ye Bingyu was already losing patience. “If you were worried about Lin Bingwei finding them, why didn’t you hurry up? Why waste time fussing over that tiny plot of land?”
The two exchanged glances before launching into their usual complaints.
“Oh, we’re not like you, Miss High-and-Mighty! That little plot may not seem like much, but it’s our most valuable asset! We only just got the land this year. We hadn’t even warmed up to it before you came back. If we’d known sooner, we would’ve prepared in advance.”
“Didn’t I call you long ago?”
“Yes, you did, but we weren’t sure if Brother Ye and his wife would actually take us with them. We had to wait for their approval before we could plan anything at home.”
“Exactly! What if they said no? Then if we sold off everything, how would we survive?”
“How much could that junk possibly be worth?”
“Junk? Our homegrown radishes, vegetables, the kitchenware—some of which is still brand-new—plus two new quilts, six chickens, five ducks, and—”
“Enough.” Ye Bingyu could no longer bear it and cut them off.
What was the point of talking to them about this? Short-sighted fools. They only saw what was right in front of them. Explaining anything more was useless.
She waved a hand dismissively. “Forget it. The past doesn’t matter. What matters now is that my parents already suspect—or rather, they’re practically convinced—that Lin Bingwei is their real daughter. But since they’re academics, they’re meticulous about evidence. They won’t say anything to hurt me until they have solid proof.
“But paper can’t cover fire forever. This kind of thing can’t stay hidden for a lifetime.”
“Sweetheart, don’t be scared. We’ll just deny everything. If they don’t have proof, so what if they believe it? Didn’t you say they’re serious about their research? If they can’t find evidence, they won’t acknowledge that wretched girl. Only your father and I know the truth. If we refuse to admit it, where can they get proof?”
Ye Bingyu sneered. “You really think denying it will bury the truth? You two are holed up in this backwater village, obsessing over that tiny plot of land. Do you even know how advanced things are abroad?
“To verify biological relationships, you don’t need to say a word. All it takes is testing blood samples from me, Lin Bingwei, and my parents.”
They were completely illiterate and didn’t understand a thing.
After a long pause, they finally responded, “You mean that blood-drop test? Is that really reliable?”
“Blood-drop recognition isn’t reliable, but this isn’t that. This is a much more rigorous technology—100% accuracy for related individuals, and absolutely accurate for unrelated ones. So, no amount of denial will help you.”
The two of them were stunned.
Bihua turned to her husband. “Dear, w-what do we do?”
Lin Wangsheng said, “Don’t panic. No matter how advanced it is, it’s still a foreign thing. Will our country even recognize it? As long as the government doesn’t acknowledge it, we don’t have to either.”
He then looked at Ye Bingyu. “Xiaoyu, am I right? They can’t just drag you and Lin Bingwei abroad for testing, can they? Even if they do, that’s just some foreign nonsense. Our country doesn’t accept it.”
Ye Bingyu: “…”
They could twist things that far?
But he did have a point—domestic implementation of this technology was just a matter of time.
No problem. As long as they could stall for a few years.
“Let’s go back.”
“Huh? We’re just… going back like this?”
“What else?” Ye Bingyu snorted. “The priority isn’t the paternity test—it’s making sure they don’t go around the village asking questions and spreading rumors.”
“Oh, right! Right! Let’s hurry back!”
Ye Bingyu had the hotel staff call a taxi, then took Lin Wangsheng and Bihua back to Lin Family Village.
By this time, Ye Junsheng’s car had already arrived.
The car couldn’t drive into the village and had to park by the roadside.
Fortunately, the entrance to the village had a wide enough space reserved for drop-offs, enough to fit two or three small cars.
Li Yurong led her family home. It wasn’t far—just about two li (a little over half a mile).
She pointed ahead at an old blue-brick house. “This is my home.”
Hearing this, Ye Junsheng took out his glasses and put them on.
The house must have originally been a traditional courtyard with three wings. However, the front gatehouse was missing, and the courtyard walls had been replaced with woven bamboo and mud, which looked completely out of place.
Ye Junsheng asked, “Sister Li, this should have been enclosed by blue-brick walls and a gatehouse, right?”
Li Yurong nodded. “Yes, it was originally a proper blue-brick courtyard. But back then, the village was so poor they couldn’t even afford bricks to build the communal canteen. So my old man volunteered to tear down our courtyard walls to donate bricks for the canteen.”
That made sense. A house this grand wouldn’t have had such an odd mud wall to begin with.
Li Yurong invited them inside with a smile. “Excuse the mess, don’t mind it.”
As soon as Ye Junsheng stepped in, he was captivated by the house.
Even the courtyard was paved with blue bricks! Though many were worn with age, the craftsmanship was evident.
He glanced at Gu Siyun.
Gu Siyun, too, was drawn in by the antique charm of the house.
Just then, Li Yurong continued, “The house is old and a bit run-down. I hope you don’t mind.”
Hearing her say this, Ye Junsheng quickly responded, “Not at all, not at all! Sister Li, your house is exceptionally well-preserved. If the walls and gatehouse hadn’t been removed, it’d be invaluable. May I look around?”
Seeing how much he appreciated it, Li Yurong beamed. “Of course! Look all you like, don’t be shy.”
With her permission, Ye Junsheng and Gu Siyun started exploring.
Meanwhile, Li Yurong went inside and brought out sunflower seeds, peanuts, and candies, along with some oranges harvested last winter. She also fetched some from the cellar to share with Ye Kang and Lin Yaozu, who happily benefited from the hospitality.
