Crossflow: A Novel
Crossflow chapter 42

“Yeah, I still have a video conference to attend later.”

“Oh.” Tao Fengche nodded, opening his mouth slightly but unsure what else to say. The atmosphere between them grew tense.

Sui Yuesheng was fully focused on checking the assignments in his hand, not paying much attention to this minor interruption. Ever since they had reunited, Tao Fengche had been acting strangely. Sui Yuesheng didn’t have much experience dealing with adolescent Alphas. Although he had bought some books on the subject, he hadn’t had time to read them due to his busy schedule… If they weren’t talking, then so be it.

After signing off on the assignments and confirming he hadn’t missed anything, he turned to leave. Just as he reached the door, he seemed to remember something and turned back, asking, “Do you have an exam tomorrow?”

This afternoon, as soon as the plane landed at Jingpu Airport, Sui Yuesheng received a message from Tao Fengche’s school, informing him that cheating during the exams was prohibited and violators would face disciplinary action. Parents were urged to supervise their children.

Tao Fengche had always been a top student, so Sui Yuesheng wasn’t worried about him cheating. However, as his guardian, he felt it necessary to ask.

Tao Fengche nodded. He wasn’t surprised that Sui Yuesheng knew about the exams. This person was always meticulous. Ever since he said he would transfer school messages to his personal phone, he hadn’t missed a single one. Even if Sui Yuesheng had forgotten, Xu Song would definitely remind him about the upcoming exams.

The old butler, Xu Song, had always been concerned about how to get the two young masters to get along again. Sui Yuesheng’s thoughts were hard to read, making it difficult to understand his attitude on this matter. Tao Fengche, on the other hand, had recently begun to appreciate Xu Song’s efforts.

If it hadn’t been for Xu Song mediating between them, his past impulsive self might have already been blacklisted by Sui Yuesheng, never to see the light of day again. Tao Fengche thought with some fear.

What he didn’t know was that at this moment, the seemingly all-powerful Sui Yuesheng was slightly distracted. Tao Fengche’s hair had grown a bit long recently due to his busy schedule, forgetting to get a haircut, and it swayed as he nodded, looking quite cute.

It reminded Sui Yuesheng of the little boy with a bowl haircut from years ago.

As he watched, a sudden impulse surged within him. After a moment’s thought, he found what he wanted from the beach of memories, imitating how the family upstairs used to cheer for their child. He took a few steps closer, reached out, and gently ruffled Tao Fengche’s hair.

“Good luck on your exam.”

Tao Fengche was stunned.

Ten years ago, Sui Yuesheng used to ruffle his hair all the time. When they played together and were having fun, he would ruffle his hair. When Tao Fengche was naughty and made him angry, he would also hold him down and ruffle his hair furiously…

But this was the first time in ten years.

It was a familiar yet unfamiliar gesture. Tao Zhixing also used to do this often, but for some reason, Tao Fengche’s whole body stiffened. He felt as if a weak electric current was running through his veins, making his entire body tingle and go numb.

Biology says that human hair doesn’t have direct blood flow or cell growth, so there are no sensory nerve glands, hence no feeling, right?

But why did it feel like countless tiny tentacles were dancing with joy just because Sui Yuesheng ruffled his hair?

Sui Yuesheng couldn’t read minds, so he was completely unaffected by Tao Fengche’s bizarre emotions. Seeing his dazed look, he simply thought that adolescent Alphas didn’t like this kind of intimate interaction.

This made him a bit embarrassed as well, but fortunately, he had done what he needed to do. Sui Yuesheng pondered for a moment, giving up on the idea of remedying the situation—most likely it would just make things worse. It might be better to leave it as it is.

Sui Yuesheng quickly convinced himself, turned around to leave, but was suddenly pulled back by Tao Fengche, who had just come to his senses.

“Wait!”

What now? Sui Yuesheng’s heart skipped a beat. He turned around, somewhat puzzled, “Hmm?”

Tao Fengche looked a bit embarrassed. Under Sui Yuesheng’s gaze, he opened the drawer beside him and grabbed a handful of snacks, which he then placed in Sui Yuesheng’s hands.

Sui Yuesheng: “…”

No way, has this become a habit? Is he addicted to feeding me?

And besides, I’m not even hungry right now.

Sui Yuesheng found it both funny and annoying and tried to return the snacks, “I’m not hungry. You keep them for yourself.”

“Take them.” Tao Fengche pursed his lips and looked up at him, “You can eat them if you get hungry during the meeting.”

This stubborn expression was exactly the same as when Tao Fengche wanted Sui Yuesheng to sneak out and set off fireworks with him when they were kids…

Sui Yuesheng’s heart softened all of a sudden. The refusal was on the tip of his tongue, but he didn’t say it in the end. He smiled and took the snacks.

Half an hour later.

Tao’s business covered the globe, but the company on the western continent had a time difference with the headquarters, resulting in most transoceanic video conferences starting late at night in Jìngpu.

But today was particularly special—every senior employee attending the meeting witnessed the legendary ruthless Mr. Sui listening to the report while munching on pocky.

“…”

“Continue,” Sui Yuesheng focused intently on the documents. When the report suddenly stopped, he looked up at the screen and reminded them somewhat dissatisfied.

“Oh, okay.” The manager speaking nodded hastily and quickly continued with the report.

It’s terrifying! Why is Mr. Sui attending the video conference with a biscuit in his mouth today? Is he hinting that we’ve been talking too much and made him hungry?

However, Mr. Sui eating snacks during the meeting… he looks kind of… cute? As soon as this thought emerged, the manager quickly recalled the series of high-pressure policies and decisive actions Mr. Sui implemented since taking office. He swallowed reflexively and quickly dismissed the strange idea.

I must be crazy. How could Mr. Sui be associated with the word “cute”? “Terrifying” is more like it! I’ve never seen such a scary beta; he’s truly a beauty with a cold heart.

I must be sleep-deprived and too nervous about reporting to Mr. Sui in the video conference. I’m having hallucinations… This won’t do. I’ll see a doctor after work today.

The manager made up his mind.
