Chapter 56.2

Zhong Xiangxue had never seen someone describe being idle so refreshingly and skillfully. She thought Jiang Suihan’s perspective was worth acknowledging. Living a good life and not causing trouble for others could also be seen as a form of progress.

“Well, I wish you success in achieving your dreams.” After a few seconds of thought, Zhong Xiangxue only said this. Since it was her dream, wishing her success was the right thing to do.

“And I wish Doctor Zhong becomes a highly skilled and respected doctor in the future. I’m looking forward to that day,” Jiang Suihan said with a smile.

“Thank you. I still have work, so I have to go now.” Zhong Xiangxue returned a faint smile.

On her way back to the office, she kept smiling. She suddenly remembered she initially went to see Jiang Suihan to indirectly inquire about her and Xu Zhao’s marriage. Instead, she was enchanted by Jiang Suihan’s sweet words.

This girl has quite the skill in charming people.

Zhong Xiangxue thought to herself, feeling no unhappiness. She realized Xu Zhao was no longer important. What mattered was that she had been complimented today!

“Xiao Jiang? You’re ill too?” Wu Guihua came over holding her young daughter, surprised.

“Just a fever. The doctor advised an IV drip. What’s wrong with Xi Xi?” Jiang Suihan asked, noticing Wu Guihua’s daughter looking listless with a slight flush on her cheeks.

“She’s the same. I just took her to the doctor. The doctor said her temperature is a bit high and prescribed an IV drip,” Wu Guihua said, patting her daughter’s little head.

Her daughter had been feeling unwell since last night, but she hadn’t paid much attention. She was preoccupied with her younger son who refused to do his homework, engaging in a battle of wits with him. When she woke from a nap, she noticed her daughter looking unwell. Upon touching her forehead and finding it very hot, she quickly brought her to the hospital.

“With the weather cooling down, it’s easy to catch colds and fevers. Children have lower immunity and are more prone to illness than adults,” Jiang Suihan said, not wanting to delay Wu Guihua’s child’s treatment, so she avoided further conversation.

Looking up at the IV drip hanging on the stand, she noticed it was almost empty and asked Jiang Leyun to find a nurse to replace it.

“Sister, I want to be a doctor in the future,” the child suddenly said.

“A doctor? Why the sudden change? Didn’t you used to say you wanted to be a great engineer?” Jiang Suihan turned, curious about her brother’s change of mind.

“Because doctors can cure and save people,” Jiang Leyun tilted his head, explaining his reason. He also had other reasons, such as wanting to take better care of his sister and making her proud.

“Have you really thought this through?” Jiang Suihan patted her brother’s head. She knew from experience that children’s ideas can change frequently. Today they might want to be a doctor, and tomorrow a scientist.

It’s good for children to have dreams. As long as they don’t violate principles, she supports them.

“Yes, I really want to be a doctor.” Jiang Leyun clenched his little fist, looking serious.

“Then work hard and become a good doctor in the future.” Jiang Suihan had no objection to her brother’s career choice. Being a doctor was quite good—stable job, high social status, though a bit tiring. As for whether he would change his mind later, that was something to consider in the future.

“Mm.” Jiang Leyun nodded solemnly.

After returning from the hospital, Jiang Suihan took her medicine and, feeling the effects, grew a bit drowsy. She rested for over an hour.

Lying alone in bed that night, it’s common for one’s mood to be low when ill. With Xu Zhao not at home, she missed him a bit. He had promised to return in a month, but now that a month had passed, she had heard nothing.

She knew she shouldn’t blame him, it was his job. Still, she couldn’t help but worry about him, fearing he might get hurt somewhere she didn’t know.

“Liar,” Jiang Suihan muttered, her nose slightly sore, feeling an inexplicable urge to cry.

She wiped away her tears, feeling that her emotions were a bit over the top. She rarely cried, and even less so over being sick.

The next noon, Wang Dahe brought a fish to the house. “Sister-in-law, this is a fish we caught in a pond on the mountain during our training this morning. Take it home and make fish soup to nourish yourself.”

There was a small pond on the mountain, quite deep. Wang Dahe had a roommate from a riverside area who was good at swimming. During a break, he caught a few fish, and Wang Dahe specially brought one over, giving the rest to the cafeteria for the team’s extra meal, though not everyone might get a taste.

“How can I take your things? We have food at home. You should take it back,” Jiang Suihan insisted.

“We caught plenty of fish. It’s enough to eat. Sister-in-law, you take it.” Wang Dahe directly shoved a fish into Jiang Leyun’s hands and ran off as fast as lightning before anyone could stop him.

Jiang Suihan opened her mouth, wanting to call him back, but in the blink of an eye, he was already gone.

Holding the fish that had been forced into his hands, Jiang Leyun looked at her sister with a questioning gaze, silently asking what to do.

“Forget it, we’ll just invite them over for a meal next time,” Jiang Suihan sighed, rubbing her forehead helplessly. She then turned to her brother and asked, “How about we make fish head soup and steam the rest of the fish?”

The fish was quite large, likely over a pound. It was a pity they didn’t have any pickled vegetables at home, or they could have made pickled fish.

Jiang Leyun nodded. When it came to meals, he only had two requirements: to be full and for the food to taste good. His sister’s cooking skills had improved significantly, far better than when she used to just boil things and add salt.

However, as soon as Jiang Suihan started handling the fish, the symptoms from the past few days reappeared—she felt nauseous again.

She threw up violently, unable to bear even the slightest smell of fish.

Jiang Leyun stood by, completely at a loss, scratching his head in worry. He kept asking where she felt unwell and if her previous illness hadn’t yet passed.

Jiang Suihan’s stomach churned, and she retched until only bile came out.

“Sister, have some water,” Jiang Leyun offered her an enamel cup.

Jiang Suihan took it, rinsing her mouth first to get rid of the bitter taste, then slowly sipped some water. She had almost thrown up her entire stomach just now—there was only one word for it: miserable.

Holding the enamel cup in her hands, she sat down and began to think. Both times she had vomited after smelling fish, and she had initially thought it was due to her fever. But maybe that wasn’t the reason.

A new suspicion began to form in her mind.

Jiang Suihan placed her hand on her stomach and glanced down. Could it be that there was going to be a new member in the family?

“Sister, do you want more water?” Jiang Leyun asked, noticing that she was staring at her stomach without saying a word.

“Pour me a little more—just half a cup,” Jiang Suihan handed the enamel cup back to her brother, but her eyes remained fixed on her stomach.

Could she really be pregnant?

She had been vomiting, craving sour food, and feeling constantly tired these past few days. All of these symptoms seemed like early signs of pregnancy.

Now that she thought about it, she and Xu Zhao had been married for over two months. Their marital life was quite regular, and they hadn’t taken any steps to avoid pregnancy. Xu Zhao was young and strong, and she was in good health. It wouldn’t be surprising if she were pregnant.

With this thought, Jiang Suihan became more certain. She decided to visit the hospital that afternoon for a check-up.Today was Saturday, so she had a day off.

In the end, despite her nausea, Jiang Suihan managed to cook the fish, though she vomited three times in the process. She didn’t touch any of it afterward and couldn’t stand the smell, so she had Jiang Leyun take the steamed fish and soup far away from her.

Jiang Leyun, on the other hand, ate so much that he was stuffed. He drank two bowls of fish soup, ate half the steamed fish, and even had one and a half bowls of rice. He was so full that he slumped in his chair, unable to move.

“Serves you right for eating so much,” Jiang Suihan glanced at her brother in mock annoyance. No matter how delicious the food, you shouldn’t eat until you’re uncomfortable. Kids just don’t know when to stop.

Worried that she might oversleep, Jiang Suihan set an alarm for 3 p.m. When the alarm went off, she was still groggy and sat on the bed in a daze for a full two minutes before slowly getting up.

She pushed open Jiang Leyun’s door to find him still asleep. She woke him up and asked if he wanted to come with her to the hospital, stay home to do his homework, or go play with Zhao Xiaojun and the others.

“I’ll go with you,” Jiang Leyun responded quickly. With his sister feeling unwell and vomiting, there was no way he could think about playing.

Feeling that there was a high chance she was pregnant, Jiang Suihan walked downstairs carefully, paying close attention to each step, afraid of tripping or falling.

At the hospital, the doctor was once again Zhong Xiangxue.

“Are you running a fever again? Where do you feel uncomfortable?”  Zhong Xiangxue looked up and was surprised to see Jiang Suihan.

“No fever. I’ve just been feeling nauseous, tired, and especially sleepy these past few days, so I thought I’d come to the hospital for a check-up,” Jiang Suihan explained, shaking her head.

“Let me take a look,” Zhong Xiangxue gestured for Jiang Suihan to extend her hand for an examination. After a thorough check, she handed her a form. “Take this to the lab for some tests, then come back to see me when the results are ready.”

Though she had studied internal medicine and wasn’t an expert in gynecology, based on her examination and Jiang Suihan’s description, there was about a 70-80% chance that she was pregnant. However, without further tests, she couldn’t provide a definitive answer.

There weren’t many people at the testing area, so Jiang Suihan didn’t have to wait long for her turn. However, it took over an hour to receive the test results.

Jiang Suihan quickly scanned the report but couldn’t make sense of it, so she returned to Zhong Xiangxue.

“Congratulations, you’re pregnant,” Zhong Xiangxue said with a smile after reviewing the report.
