Chapter 57.1
“I’m pregnant?!” Jiang Suihan’s eyes widened in surprise. She stared at Zhong Xiangxue in disbelief, a look of astonished joy spreading across her face.
Although she had already suspected it at home, hearing it confirmed made her heart feel as if it had been struck by something heavy. Her mind went blank, and she couldn’t think straight.
She lowered her head and gently touched her stomach. It was hard to believe that there was a tiny life growing inside her, one that would gradually grow larger until the day they finally met.
Life is truly magical.
“You heard it right, you are indeed pregnant. Look at the checkup report, it’s just been one month.” Zhong Xiangxue repeated it again and again without getting tired of it. The arrival of a new life is always full of surprises and surprises, and she is also happy for Jiang Suihan.
Jiang Leyun’s mind was in a fog. He understood every word the doctor and his sister exchanged, but when those words were strung together, he felt a bit confused.
His bewildered gaze fell on his sister, and he couldn’t help but speak up: “Sister, you’re having a baby!?”
“Yes, you’re going to be an uncle. Are you happy?” Jiang Suihan turned her head toward her brother, her smile widening, her eyes filled with joy.
“So, I’m going to have a nephew!? I’m going to be an uncle!?” Jiang Leyun jumped up in place, expressing his excitement by leaping as high as he could, showing just how thrilled he was.
The thought that he would soon have a little nephew was as refreshing as drinking an ice-cold soda on a hot day. He was so happy that he felt like he could fly and wanted to run outside and share the good news with everyone he met.
Zhong Xiangxue sat nearby, watching the siblings congratulate each other. She find it amusing. She couldn’t help but comment, “You two have such a good sibling relationship.”
She had two older brothers and an older sister. Being the youngest, her brothers, who were much older, found her annoying because she was a girl and too young to take out to play. Her sister, only a year older, had mixed feelings about her. She didn’t like playing with Zhong Xiangxue either, feeling that their parents favored the younger sibling more, which created some tension.
She had heard that Jiang Suihan and her brother only had each other after their parents passed away, so it was natural for the two to rely on each other and have such a close bond.
It was Jiang Suihan’s first pregnancy, and she was understandably anxious, worried about whether she was doing everything right. She had spent over twenty minutes in the doctor’s office asking Zhong Xiangxue all kinds of questions about pregnancy, determined to make sure she got everything right.
“That’s pretty much everything. If you’re still worried, you can come to the hospital for a check-up every month. In the later stages, you can come every week. You can also ask other women who have given birth for their experiences, but don’t take their word for everything. Everyone’s pregnancy is different. Your body is a bit on the thin side, so try to eat more meat, eggs, and vegetables to get the nutrients you need. If possible, drink more milk—it’s rich in protein.”
Zhong Xiangxue was nearly overwhelmed by Jiang Suihan’s endless questions. One after another, without a break. Her mouth was dry, and her glass of water was empty. She couldn’t wait to leave and get more water to quench her thirst.
“Thank you, Doctor Zhong.” Jiang Suihan smiled apologetically at Zhong Xiangxue. She knew she had asked too many questions, but being a first-time mother with no experience, she couldn’t help but worry and overthink, wanting to do her best.
“It’s no problem. It’s your first pregnancy, so it’s natural to want to learn more for the sake of your child. Take care on your way home.” Zhong Xiangxue showed no signs of impatience. As a doctor, no matter how many questions a patient asked, she couldn’t afford to be rude.
Jiang Suihan had walked to the hospital, worried that riding a bike might be too bumpy.
Jiang Leyun, on the other hand, was bouncing along the way, brimming with excitement. His smile was so wide it nearly reached his ears.
“Sister, when the baby is born, I’ll take good care of him. I’ll play with him, read to him, and make sure no one bullies him.” The boy was already daydreaming about the wonderful life he would have with his nephew and started sweet-talking his sister.
“How do you know it’s a nephew and not a niece?” Jiang Suihan chuckled, wondering if her brother had a preference for boys over girls.
“It’s just a feeling. I just think the baby in your belly is a boy.” Jiang Leyun blurted out, then hesitated a little before saying, “But if it’s a niece, I’ll love her just the same.”
His little eyebrows furrowed, and his expression was so conflicted it was almost amusing.
People always say that children have a sharp sense. Could it really be a boy in her belly?
“What’s wrong with having a girl?” Jiang Suihan was certain now that her brother did have a bit of a preference for boys over girls.
“It’s not that. It’s just that girls cry too much. They cry at the slightest thing, can’t run fast, and you can’t hit or scold them. If it’s a boy, I could take him fishing, play soccer, make mud pies, and climb trees to pick fruit.” When Jiang Leyun talked about girls, his face showed disdain, but when he spoke of boys, his face lit up with a brilliant smile.
It wasn’t that he had anything against girls—they were just too delicate and no fun at all.
Xiaojun’s younger sister, Xixi, often clung to Xiaojun. Sometimes, when Xiaojun couldn’t get rid of her, he had to bring her along. In a group of boys, having one girl felt like a burden. Sure, she was cute, but she really slowed them down, toddling along on her short legs, calling out “big brother” this and “big brother” that. Because they had to take care of her, the boys never had as much fun as they wanted.
“What if I give birth to a girl and not a boy?” Jiang Suihan was curious to see how her brother would handle that situation.
“If it’s your baby, I’ll love them no matter what.” Jiang Leyun replied without hesitation, sweet words coming naturally to him.
Whether it was a nephew or a niece, as long as they came from his sister, they would be his own family, and he would never dislike them.
After deciding yesterday that he wanted to become a doctor, today he set a new goal: to be the best uncle in the world.
“Did you eat something sweet today? Your words are so sugary.” Jiang Suihan smiled, holding her brother’s hand as they walked. “I just know our Lele will be a great uncle in the future.”
Receiving his sister’s praise, Jiang Leyun beamed with pride, nodding enthusiastically.
“There are still nine months before the baby arrives, but once the baby’s here, you won’t be the youngest in the family anymore. Since a person’s energy is limited, I might spend more time taking care of the baby and less time on you. If I ever make you feel neglected, you have to let me know. Even with the baby, you’ll always be my little darling.”
Jiang Suihan worried that Jiang Leyun might feel left out once the baby came. He had always been the pampered one in the family, and with a new baby, she and Xu Zhao would naturally devote more time to the infant, possibly unintentionally overlooking him.
In modern times, some parents, when having a second child, will clearly explain things to the older child to prevent them from mistakenly thinking that the parents love the younger sibling more and no longer love them.
By telling in advance, she wanted her younger brother to know that even if she had her own child, she would still treat him as before. Whatever the baby gets, he will get too. She wouldn’t ask him to give up his place just because there’s a new baby, nor would everything in the house be prioritized for the baby.
“I get it, Sister. You’re so mushy.” Jiang Leyun’s cheeks flushed as he tried hard to suppress the smile creeping up the corners of his mouth.
He thought to himself that he’s grown up now, practically a big kid. His sister really shouldn’t call him her “little darling” anymore. If his classmates at school heard about it, it would be super embarrassing.
“Alright then, if you don’t like me calling you that, I won’t anymore.” Jiang Suihan respected her brother’s opinion, though she felt a bit disappointed.
“Little darling” sounded so sweet. It’s just because he’s still young that she calls him that. No one’s ever called her “darling” either.
“Well, okay, call me whatever you want.” Jiang Leyun had an expression like he couldn’t win against his sister, showing his prideful yet restrained attitude.
Jiang Suihan couldn’t help but poke her brother’s cheek lightly. It felt so soft, even chubbier than before. She scrutinized him closely, “Have you grown taller?”
“Really?!” Jiang Leyun’s eyes lit up instantly. He’d been eating two bowls of rice per meal recently, and the bowls in their house weren’t small—he wasn’t even using the little kids’ bowls anymore.
“And you’ve gained weight.” Jiang Suihan added out of the blue.
He had grown taller, but he had also put on some weight. He used to be a skinny little rascal, but now he was becoming a bit chubby.
The smile on Jiang Leyun’s face froze, and he looked utterly deflated. He stared at his sister with a look of reproach, not saying a word, just expressing his dissatisfaction with his eyes.
Couldn’t she let him enjoy his happiness for a little longer? Why did she have to tell him such a hard truth?
“Chubby kids are great! They’re healthy and cute, and I happen to like kids with a bit of chubbiness.” Jiang Suihan quickly comforted him, feeling both amused and helpless. He’s just a little kid, yet he’s already aware of beauty standards and has pretty high expectations of his own image.
Chubby kids are adorable, and as they grow, they naturally slim down.
“I don’t want to be called ‘chubby,’” Jiang Leyun pouted, clearly unhappy with the word “chubby.”
“You’re not fat! I just said that compared to before, you were too thin before. Now you’re just right—not too fat, not too thin,” Jiang Suihan quickly coaxed, thinking to herself how this kid has quite a temper.
Jiang Suihan hadn’t announced her pregnancy to anyone except for Jiang Leyun and Zhong Xiangxue, and since Zhong Xiangxue wasn’t the type to gossip, she hadn’t mentioned it to anyone either.
