Chapter 93: Separation
Lin Beixiu endured her pinching as a way of venting, then rubbed her head, “Since you acknowledge me as your brother, naturally, I have to take good care of you, silly little sister.”
Qin Muxue let go of him, her eyes swollen from crying, and said irritably, “What are you so pleased about? By age, you are actually a little brother.”
“Yes.”
Lin Beixiu just smiled, not arguing with her.
“Now that you’re awake, do you want to take a shower?”
Qin Muxue nodded; her sleepiness was gone after crying, so it was a good time.
Qin Muxue took her clothes and went to the bathroom. Lin Beixiu waited, knowing from experience that she would take a long time.
With nothing else to do, Lin Beixiu went to tease the cat again. The little guy, seeing the two of them eating so vigorously earlier, had been ignored even though it had meowed itself hoarse. Now it was showing its temper, batting at Lin Beixiu through the cage with a flurry of meows.
Lin Beixiu chuckled and added some milk for it, not too much, and the little one calmed down.
“I’m done washing, your turn.”
Lin Beixiu turned around, and Qin Muxue had already come out of the bathroom, dressed in her pajamas, her face flushed.
“Oh, okay.”
Lin Beixiu got up, took his clothes, and entered the bathroom. Qin Muxue glanced at Mantou, smiled, and sat on the sofa to dry her hair. Eventually, Lin Beixiu, having dried his hair, returned to his room to find Qin Muxue already in his bed, eyes closed.
Lin Beixiu carefully climbed into bed, and Qin Muxue opened her eyes.
“Did I wake you?”
Qin Muxue shook her head slightly, “I can’t sleep without you.”
Saying this, she boldly moved closer to him, her boldness purely fueled by the lingering alcohol.
Under normal circumstances, Lin Beixiu would have had goosebumps, thinking this girl was talking nonsense, and then he would have kicked her out with a “older sister Qin”. But now, having discovered her true identity…
Lin Beixiu smiled and turned off the light.
“Then let’s sleep now, goodnight.”
“Oh.”
…….
The room fell silent, but Lin Beixiu was very awake, unable to calm down for a long time.
Knowing her identity, the things he had done in the past still haunted him, becoming a shackle. How should he face Qin Muxue now?
Lin Beixiu’s mood became even more complex, thinking about how he had left without even saying goodbye, causing significant hurt to the young girl.
As Lin Beixiu was lost in his thoughts, Qin Muxue’s hand stealthily reached over, touching his stomach. Lin Beixiu was startled, freezing in place.
“You….”
Qin Muxue interrupted him, “Let me hold you like this for a while.”
Lin Beixiu turned his head; they were close, and he could still see her uneasy expression.
Lin Beixiu rolled over and embraced her. Qin Muxue, not expecting his sudden movement, trembled, then relaxed, looking bewildered.
Why was Little Bei being so proactive?
Lin Beixiu thought he had scared her, quickly explaining, “Don’t be afraid, I don’t mean anything else.”
Qin Muxue was certainly not afraid; she might as well have cleaned herself up and presented herself, and Lin Beixiu would still remain unmoved.
“What’s wrong?”
“Are you still feeling upset?”
Qin Muxue shook her head, “It’s okay now, thank you, Little Brother Bei.”
“Rather than worrying about other things, we should focus on living well. Let the past be the past. I hope you can be happy in the future,” Lin Beixiu spoke softly, comforting her.
“Mm.”
“Thank you, Little Brother Bei.”
Qin Muxue’s embrace tightened a bit more, thinking silently.
With you, I am very happy.
Lin Beixiu’s expression was complex; in fact, he himself hadn’t fully let go of the past, he wasn’t happy himself.
……….
The next day, early morning.
Lin Beixiu got up early, washed up, and started making breakfast while also quietly packing his things, careful not to wake Qin Muxue.
Breakfast was ready, and Lin Beixiu had set it on the table, covered to keep warm; his belongings were few and already packed.
As he zipped up his suitcase and turned around, he saw Qin Muxue watching him with a complicated expression, and Lin Beixiu awkwardly greeted her.
“Are you going to leave without saying goodbye?” Qin Muxue asked, pouting.
“No, I had the ticket booked for this time; I saw you were still sleeping and didn’t want to disturb you.”
Qin Muxue smiled, “You could have woken me up; I could have helped you.”
Having drunk a lot the night before, Lin Beixiu hadn’t had the chance to pack and was only doing so now.
“There’s still time, I’ll come with you.”
“Sure, we have plenty of time. No need to rush.”
Qin Muxue said and went back to her bedroom to change clothes. Lin Beixiu paused, then smiled, shaking his head and sitting on the sofa to wait.
Soon, Qin Muxue came out.
“We’re leaving, what time is the train?”
“Around eight, we have an hour, that’s enough.”
The two walked together, catching a cab that they had called in advance.
“Why bother? I made you breakfast, and instead of eating, you’re out here suffering with me.”
“It’s no big deal; didn’t you say we’re friends? I can help with a little thing.”
Seeing her like this, Lin Beixiu didn’t say much, mainly because he had only one suitcase.
The taxi driver quickly dropped them off at the subway station.
Walking together, neither mentioned the events of the previous day.
It was Lin Beixiu who started the conversation, “When are you leaving?”
“I don’t know, depending on the situation, either this afternoon or tomorrow.”
……..
Before it was time, they sat on a bench in the waiting area.
“Little Bei, I won’t see you for a month and a half.”
Lin Beixiu’s mouth twitched, “It’s not a life-or-death farewell, don’t make it sound so dismal, okay?”
Qin Muxue covered her mouth and chuckled, “This way it’s not fun for you.”
“I would rather…”
Lin Beixiu suddenly stopped, and Qin Muxue looked at him curiously, laughing.
“Would rather what?”
“Nothing.”
“Alright, then drink less alcohol when you get back; it’s bad for your health, even though we went crazy last night.”
“Okay,” Lin Beixiu readily agreed.
“Then can I come visit you?” Qin Muxue asked.
“Anytime.”
Then the subway announcement sounded, and Lin Beixiu’s train arrived.
“Alright, you should go back too. Don’t forget to eat breakfast, and take care of Mantou. If you don’t understand something, ask me. I’m really worried you might accidentally kill it.”
Qin Muxue, annoyed, wanted to kick him, but Lin Beixiu grabbed his luggage and ran.
“Hehe, goodbye.”
Lin Beixiu ran to where she couldn’t reach him, waving his hand, his tone carrying a hint of reluctance.
Qin Muxue stood there, her lips curving up, waving back at him.
Among the crowd, this pair stood out brightly, with many people looking at Qin Muxue.
Lin Beixiu boarded the train, and as the train disappeared from her sight, she finally snapped out of it, her expression returning to its usual cold, expressionless state as she left the subway station.
Back home, her phone vibrated; Qin Muxue looked at it, a message from her mother asking when she would come home so she could pick her up.
Qin Muxue sent a message, then started packing her things, quickly finishing. She looked at the little creature in the cage, took it out, and said,
“Mantou, let’s go somewhere else to play.”
