Chapter 18
In this room, Zhou Yanjing simply couldn’t stay, throwing out a sentence: “I’m going to sleep in the guest room.”
Lin Yuxi called for Aunt Chen, who was shocked to see the cats: “Oh, the door was closed tightly, where did they come from?”
The two of them worked together to bring a few cats back to the downstairs room, only to realize the window had been opened at some point.
“It must have opened the window by itself and ran in from the garden. This cat is really becoming clever.”
The three-colored cat, now clever, was scratching at the door inside, crying out mournfully.
As soon as Lin Yuxi opened the door, its cry immediately turned sweet and soft, seamlessly switching.
Lin Yuxi couldn’t bear to blame it, watching it rub against her hand and act spoiled, and sighed:
“If you want to murder Zhou Yanjing, you could at least discuss it with me in advance.”
Aunt Chen, standing nearby, widened her eyes in shock, doubting her hearing.
“Maybe we should send them away. The second young master is allergic, and this is not a trivial matter. Cat hair flies everywhere, and even cleaning and disinfecting every day can’t make it clean.”
A colleague at the hospital had reserved a kitten, and Yu Jiaxiao was posting on social media every day to help her find someone to adopt it, but there were still three without a home.
The kittens were not even a month old and couldn’t be given away carelessly, plus the mother cat was older, making adoption even more difficult. There was really no way to send them away anytime soon.
Lin Yuxi was also a bit worried.
“Let’s have someone install child locks on the windows tomorrow.” She stroked the three-colored cat’s gentle head, resting her chin on her knee as if talking to herself.
“It shouldn’t be too long now.”
She would soon be getting a divorce from Zhou Yanjing, and if she hadn’t found someone to adopt the cats by then, she would take them herself.
Aunt Chen misunderstood her meaning: “Have you already found someone?”
Lin Yuxi just said, “Let’s change the sheets and blankets in the bedroom and do a thorough cleaning.”
She washed her hands, disinfected, changed her clothes, poured a cup of warm water, and took the loratadine to the guest bedroom, knocking on the door.
“Come in.”
Lin Yuxi pushed the door open, and Zhou Yanjing was taking off his clothes, preparing to take a shower.
The buttons of his shirt were undone to the bottom, the distinct outline of his abdomen faintly visible through the fabric.
He always had a good physique; before, Lin Yuxi had only stolen a glance at his abs while he was changing clothes, and he had just happened to catch her.
He raised an eyebrow: “I know you covet my body, but could you be a little more restrained during the day?”
He spoke with righteous indignation, like a chaste husband, yet at night he insisted on holding her hand, touching her bit by bit.
Lin Yuxi placed the tray on the dresser at the door, not stepping inside.
“Take your medicine.”
The last button of his shirt was undone, and as he took it off, Zhou Yanjing’s upper body was exposed to the air broad shoulders, narrow waist, tight muscles, exuding a strong masculine aura.
He didn’t even look at her: “I’ll take it later.”
Lin Yuxi walked over with the cup of water and the medication: “Take it now.”
At 165 cm, she wasn’t short, but standing in front of Zhou Yanjing made her feel small.
Zhou Yanjing glanced at her, took the white pill from her palm, put it in his mouth, took a sip of water, swallowed it, and then asked her, “What medicine?”
Lin Yuxi replied, “Sodium cyanide.”
Highly toxic.
One pill could take his life.
Zhou Yanjing chuckled lightly: “So you really want to poison me?”
Lin Yuxi took the cup back.
She didn’t truly want him dead; there were just moments when she really hated him.
Why did he treat her this way?
Why had he loved her and then suddenly stopped?
Zhou Yanjing only took a sip of the warm water, as if his attitude toward women was always superficial.
Lin Yuxi thought he had always been a heartless person; his passion could only last for a short time with one woman. What made her special?
Looking at the remaining half cup of water, she felt as if she were a person he had only briefly loved before being cast aside.
The only possible outcome was being thrown away.
“Zhou Yanjing.”
Lin Yuxi suddenly raised her head.
Zhou Yanjing, who was walking toward the bathroom, paused and glanced back at her: “What’s wrong? Not satisfied that the sodium cyanide didn’t kill me?”
Lin Yuxi didn’t respond to him but just stared quietly.
Her almond-shaped eyes were clear and gentle, just like her; they were bright and clean, giving off a gentle feeling of serene time.
Her gaze toward him was filled with a shallow, bright glimmer, filled with deep affection.
She hadn’t looked at him like this for a long time.
Or rather, she had never looked at him like this before.
Zhou Yanjing was slightly taken aback, his dark expression softening a bit as he smirked: “Why are you looking at me so affectionately?”
“Let’s get a divorce,” Lin Yuxi said.
This sentence had been rehearsed many times in her heart since Ling Yaqiong first contacted her.
Perhaps because she had become immune, saying it out loud felt unexpectedly light, like a burden lifted.
Of course, there would still be waves of pain, surging in her chest like a tide.
Cutting Zhou Yanjing out of her heart was not an easy task.
After she spoke, the smile on Zhou Yanjing’s face slowly faded, and he stared at her for a long time with an unreadable expression.
Lin Yuxi said, “There’s less than three weeks left until the three-year term is up.”
Zhou Yanjing asked, “Is this what you wanted to discuss all this time?”
She gave a faint hum.
Zhou Yanjing curled his lips, a thick mockery in his tone: “Aren’t there still three weeks left? Why the rush? Have you found your next target in advance?”
Lin Yuxi was stung by the mockery in his words, and the last bit of reluctance was worn away.
“Whether I have or not has nothing to do with you. After the divorce, we’ll be clear. You can pursue whoever you want, and I can find whoever I like; we’ll be unrelated.”
Zhou Yanjing’s lips curled into a cold smile, his voice like the cold ice accumulated atop a snowy mountain: “You really are impatient.”
He turned and went into the bathroom, coldly throwing her a remark: “Don’t worry, we agreed on a three-year limit; not a day more.”
Once again, they parted on unhappy terms.
After Zhou Yanjing took a shower and changed clothes, he left and didn’t return all night. Lin Yuxi only learned this from Aunt Chen the next morning.
For the next few days, he was nowhere to be seen.
Tan Xingchen was a restless person; after lying in bed for two days, it was like having nails in her back; she fussed and rolled around, complaining about being too bored, saying if she lay down any longer, she would start to rot.
Mrs. Tan had no way to deal with her, so she brought in an electric wheelchair and took her out for some sun on sunny afternoons.
Half an hour of fresh air was not enough for a hyperactive person like Tan Xingchen. Not wanting to feel lonely, she took advantage of her mother’s return home to make soup, sent the nurse away, and secretly took the wheelchair out of the ward.
After asking several nurses, she perched with her leg in a cast and took the elevator up a few floors, finding the ophthalmology office.
Yu Jiaxiao worked at an advertising company and had a more flexible schedule; after meeting clients in the afternoon, she came to wait for Lin Yuxi to finish work so they could have dinner together.
Lin Yuxi was still busy: “Wait for me to finish this medical record.”
Yu Jiaxiao was bored and sat in the corridor waiting for her when she heard someone ask, “Is Lin Yuxi here?”
Yu Jiaxiao looked up at the sound and saw a patient, wrapped in bandages on her head, legs, and arms, wheeling herself over, showing only one eye.
Yu Jiaxiao turned to the office and shouted: “Doctor Lin, there’s a mummy looking for you!”
Tan Xingchen:
It wasn’t until Yu Jiaxiao finished shouting and started laughing that Tan Xingchen realized that if it weren’t for her broken leg, she would have almost jumped out of the wheelchair.
“You’re the mummy! Your whole family is mummies!”
Lin Yuxi glanced back and, seeing it was Tan Xingchen, turned back again.
Tan Xingchen was thick-skinned, acting as if the previous unpleasantness had never happened, always shamelessly approaching Lin Yuxi.
She wheeled herself into the office, glancing around left and right beside Lin Yuxi.
“Doctor Lin, my eyes hurt again.”
“Endure it.” Lin Yuxi didn’t even raise her head, “Xiao Cui, take her back to the ward.”
Just as Xiao Cui was about to
stand up, Tan Xingchen immediately glared at him, warning: “Don’t touch me. If you dare come over, I’ll jump off the wheelchair and hit you!”
Xiao Cui quickly raised both hands in a gesture of surrender: “Okay, okay, don’t be impulsive.”
Tan Xingchen continued to inch closer to Lin Yuxi: “Tell me about your story with your husband.”
As soon as she finished speaking, several pairs of eyes in the office that were working, and Yu Jiaxiao, who was playing a game outside, all turned to her at once.
