Chapter 46
“Oh” The sound from behind immediately made Su Cheng turn around.
Tan Xingchen had apparently overheard quite a bit, wearing an expression as if she’d just discovered a shocking secret, and she loudly exclaimed:
“I thought your hospital was a legitimate public hospital, but it turns out it’s so shady! The director’s cousin can get promoted ahead of others, huh?”
Even though this was an open secret in the department, it was meant to stay a secret. Letting it out would cause big trouble.
Su Cheng’s face changed immediately, and she hurried to explain, “Miss Tan, you’ve misunderstood.”
“Misunderstood what? You’re not the director’s cousin?”
“I’m his niece, not cousin .no, wait!” Su Cheng’s face turned red with frustration.
“Well, it’s all family anyway,” Tan Xingchen waved her hand. “My dad is Tan Chenggang, and I’m his actual daughter, which surely beats being a distant cousin, right? So, can I just show up at your hospital and become a department head? Even though I’ve never studied medicine and don’t even know what glucose is, I could have my dad donate some equipment to you.”
Her voice was so loud that many people in the hallway heard her. Doctor Yuan, who had been listening in his office, hurriedly ran out.
“Our hospital absolutely doesn’t tolerate any corruption or favoritism! You mustn’t spread false accusations!” he said.
“Me, making false accusations?” Tan Xingchen leaned back comfortably, crossing her legs. “How about I file a complaint with the Health Commission, let them investigate your hospital? If I turn out to be wrong, I’ll apologize and even have my dad sponsor some equipment for you.”
As she spoke, she really pulled out her phone, and Doctor Yuan quickly snatched it from her hand.
“What are you doing?” Tan Xingchen frowned.
Doctor Yuan’s face darkened. “Miss Tan, out of respect for your father, I’ve been patient with you. I have no personal grudge against you, but do you know how much trouble a complaint to the Health Commission would cause our hospital?”
“Give me back my phone!” she demanded.
Doctor Yuan didn’t take her seriously, holding her phone behind his back. “Your father has been collaborating with our hospital for years. Do you think he’ll let you cause trouble like this?”
Tan Xingchen’s temper flared, and she tried to push her wheelchair toward him to retrieve her phone. But being in a wheelchair, she couldn’t overpower a grown man.
Su Cheng, naturally siding with Doctor Yuan, stepped in to push Tan Xingchen away. But Tan Xingchen, with a strong sense of justice, grabbed her hair.
“You dare push me? Just because I’m in a wheelchair?”
Su Cheng bent over awkwardly, her face twisted in pain, flailing her arms. “Let go! Let go!”
Doctor Yuan, utterly shocked, shouted at Lin Yuxi, “Pull them apart!”
Lin Yuxi hesitated, unsure how to intervene.
“People are already recording this. If you two aren’t afraid of going viral online, keep at it,” she said.
Su Cheng immediately froze, knowing that as a doctor, being filmed fighting with a patient could ruin her reputation, and she’d be endlessly criticized online.
“Ha, scared?” Tan Xingchen seized the opportunity to tug Su Cheng’s hair again and even kicked her with her cast-covered leg. “I have three million followers. I’m not scared at all!”
Lin Yuxi rubbed her forehead in frustration. “Tan Xingchen!”
Tan Xingchen snorted but finally let go.
Su Cheng, still fuming, took advantage of the moment to shove Tan Xingchen hard.
Caught off guard, Tan Xingchen’s wheelchair shot backward. Panicking, she tried to use the controls, but only made it go faster.
Lin Yuxi rushed over to stop the wheelchair.
But she underestimated the combined weight of the electric wheelchair and Tan Xingchen. The impact hit her squarely in the knees, nearly knocking her off balance as she stumbled several steps back.
She only stopped when her back hit a solid “wall,” and someone caught her by the waist.
Startled, she looked back to see Zhou Yanjing’s sharply defined jawline.
Zhou Yanjing calmly gripped the wheelchair’s handles, halting its momentum, while steadying her with an arm around her waist, pulling her out from behind the wheelchair.
He glanced down at her with a lazy drawl. “Quite the show. Speeding in a wheelchair through the hospital like it’s Fast and Furious?”
“I wasn’t playing around,” Lin Yuxi quickly shook off his hand, trying to put some distance between them.
Before she could ask why Zhou Yanjing was there, she saw the person standing next to him. She paused, then hurriedly greeted, “Director.”
Tan Xingchen, having caused her fair share of trouble in the past, knew well that whoever complains first usually gains the upper hand.
Before Doctor Yuan could say anything, she spoke up quickly, “You must be the director, right? I heard that this Dr. Su is your cousin, and that with such strong backing, she snatched the promotion meant for Dr. Lin. I’m just someone who can’t stand injustice and decided to speak up, but then they both ganged up and attacked me, even snatching my phone.
I’m just a weak patient, and my leg’s broken! They nearly killed me! Is your hospital run by the mafia?”
Doctor Yuan:
Su Cheng:
The director’s face darkened with anger as he glared at Doctor Yuan, his voice stern. “Is this how you handle doctor-patient relations? Causing such a scene and even laying hands on a patient? It seems you don’t want to be a director anymore!”
Doctor Yuan, who had never been so wrongly accused in his career, quickly defended himself: “Director, I didn’t lay a hand on her! You can check the surveillance footage!”
“Enough!” the director snapped. “Do you want to embarrass us even more? Apologize at once!”
Doctor Yuan, deeply aggrieved but left with no choice, begrudgingly said, “Miss Tan, I apologize. I was wrong.”
Tan Xingchen held out her hand. “My phone.”
Zhou Yanjing glanced at Lin Yuxi. She stood silently to the side, her expression calm and indifferent, as if she were completely uninvolved, as though she weren’t the one who’d had her promotion taken away.
“I see, so promotions at your hospital depend on who you know,” Zhou Yanjing remarked, sounding as though he’d learned something new.
Today, Zhou Yanjing was dressed in a light gray suit, perfectly tailored to his broad shoulders and long legs. His noble, aristocratic aura was tinged with a bit of rebellious charm, making him stand out wherever he went.
He smiled slightly and added casually, “Looks like my wife’s connections aren’t strong enough.”
Wife?
Su Cheng and Doctor Yuan were both stunned.
Lin Yuxi immediately shot Zhou Yanjing a look, hoping he’d keep quiet.
But he paid no attention to her silent plea, instead continuing to stir things up: “No wonder she’s been giving me the cold shoulder at home. Turns out she’s been feeling mistreated at work and taking it out on me.”
“Lin Yuxi gritted her teeth. Who was taking anything out on him?
What nonsense!
Su Cheng stared between her and Zhou Yanjing, eyes practically shooting sparks.
Lin Yuxi was about ready to strangle Zhou Yanjing. After all, they’d been separated for over two years, and now he suddenly showed up out of nowhere to stir up trouble.
They were about to get divorced, and now with everyone knowing about their relationship, it would only make things more complicated.
Seeing that Lin Yuxi wasn’t responding and seemed intent on distancing herself from him, Zhou Yanjing pulled her closer in front of everyone.
He wrapped an arm around her waist, holding her firmly.
“It’s my fault,” he said with an air of feigned regret. “Our family’s connections just aren’t strong enough, so you get mistreated at work. How about I buy the hospital for you to run?”
Lin Yuxi wanted to stomp on his foot.
What nonsense!
You can’t just buy a public hospital!
