Delayed Affection is Cheaper than Grass; Why Cry When I Depart? Chapter 5.2

“Huh?” Xu Pandi was surprised.

“You, Third Sister and Sixth Sister haven’t bought anything for him! That’s for sure!” Xu Wanting said.

She sighed again. “Except for the time he came back, it seems that we haven’t bought anything for him in these four years!”

Xu Pandi, upon hearing this, was slightly puzzled.

“Sis, what are you trying to say? He’s not lacking in these things! What doesn’t our Xu family have?”

“No! He is lacking! He should be!” Xu Wanting paused for a moment and said, “I’ll call Zhao Ma to come and see! Zhao Ma should know!”

“Oh?”

Xu Wanting went out to call Zhao Ma, who quickly came over.

“Miss Xu, did you call for me?”

“Zhao Ma! Let me ask you, how many sets of clothes does Xu Mo have for changing in our Xu family?” Xu Wanting asked.

“Well…” Zhao Ma glanced at the two of them, looking somewhat embarrassed.

Seeing her hesitation, Xu Wanting asked again, “When Xu Mo left, how many clothes did he take with him? Did anyone else in the family buy clothes for him?”

Upon hearing Xu Wanting’s question, Zhao Ma couldn’t help but sigh heavily. “Miss Xu, as you know, no one in the household likes Young Master Mo. Regarding this matter… it’s not easy for us servants to say anything! Young Master Mo, how could he have any clothes? Just two sets of school uniforms!”

“What?”

Instantly, Xu Wanting felt like she had been struck by lightning, her whole body frozen in shock.

She stared wide-eyed, unable to believe it.

“Master Mo was said to be an orphan before, wandering outside for a long time. During his time here, he never mentioned not having enough clothes to wear. Apart from two sets of school uniforms, he should have had two jackets! He got those two jackets by secretly working part-time outside. He didn’t dare to say it at home, afraid of Madam scolding him!” Zhao Ma sighed softly, glancing inside the room. “But it seems Young Master Mo has taken them all away now!”

Upon hearing this, Xu Wanting felt a sense of panic.

“T-then, what about his shoes? How many pairs does he have?”

“Shoes?” Zhao Ma was puzzled for a moment before responding, “There was one pair, he should have worn them away! That pair of shoes even had a hole in them, and he sewed it up with a needle and thread! Young Master Mo used to borrow needles and thread from me before! He didn’t mention having any other shoes, and I haven’t seen him wear any others!”

Xu Wanting was stunned. “So, he wore those sneakers for four years!”

“Seems so! But Young Master Mo didn’t say much about it. He said as long as there was a hole, a little mending would do! Later, he patched it up himself with needle and thread. He should still be wearing them now!” Zhao Ma sighed.

Xu Wanting was once again struck by the realization, her eyes widening in shock.

Xu Pandi also furrowed her brows, her expression suddenly grave.

She suddenly understood something and quickly turned around to search the room.

She found that there were indeed not many clothes and shoes in the room.

There was a pair of sneakers, but they were new, worn only once before Xu Mo stopped wearing them. They had been wrapped in cling film by Xu Mo and now looked brand new.

As for the clothes, most of them were similar.

Standing in the room, Xu Wanting recalled the past four years of Xu Mo’s life here, remembering every detail she had witnessed of Xu Mo’s life.

She suddenly felt a chill, shivering from head to toe.

“For these four years, Mom and Dad probably didn’t buy him anything! This room was originally the maid’s room! Needless to say for us sisters, if you didn’t buy any, then Second and Third Sister definitely didn’t, and Fifth Sister even less!” Xu Wanting took a deep breath, feeling a coldness engulfing her.

“So, what has he been doing in our house?”

Xu Pandi walked back and said, “Dad and Mom probably gave him some money to buy things himself. If he didn’t, whose fault is it?”

“No, Mom and Dad probably didn’t give him much money! I remember Mom saying she was afraid he’d pick up bad habits outside, afraid he’d cause trouble, so she only gave him enough money for food every month! Mom even asked Uncle Zhao how much money a normal child gets. Uncle Zhao said five hundred yuan a month, so Mom gave him five hundred yuan every month!”

As Xu Wanting spoke, she took a deep breath. “Over these years, Mom probably hasn’t increased his allowance! Definitely not! It’s all handled by the household finances, and Mom probably hasn’t even gone to the finance department to inquire!”

“Five hundred yuan a month?” Xu Pandi was also astonished, her eyes widening. “Is that for real? Mom only gives him five hundred yuan as pocket money per month?”

“I’ll go ask Mom and find out!” Xu Wanting couldn’t believe it either. She suddenly felt very anxious.

Combined with the relationship severance letter Xu Mo had signed a few days ago, this situation seemed far from ordinary. Almost everyone in the family had cut off contact with him.

She quickly headed outside.

“Wanting, did you find his contact information in the room?” Xie Bingyan asked with a furrowed brow as she and Xu Deming were already snacking on some treats.

Looking at her parents, Xu Wanting thought for a moment before replying, “No! We searched the room, but we couldn’t find his phone number!”

“Damn it! Is this rebellious child trying to drive me crazy?” Xie Bingyan suddenly exploded in anger.

Xu Wanting glanced at Xu Pandi before speaking up, “Mom! Over these four years, how much allowance did you give Xu Mo each month? Did he have enough money to live on outside?”

“This…” Xie Bingyan was still furious. After hearing the question, she furrowed her brow and replied, “Why are you asking about this now? He hasn’t returned yet, has he?”

“I’m just curious if he had any money on him. How much did you and Dad give him to make him so bold?” Xu Wanting asked.

Xie Bingyan furrowed her brow, then suddenly turned to Xu Deming. “Xu Deming, how much money did you give him each month? How much does he have now?”

“His money isn’t from you?” Xu Deming asked. “You handle the household, I handle the external affairs. We agreed on that a long time ago!”

“You didn’t give him any money?” Xie Bingyan was surprised.

“I don’t have time to give him money! I’m busy with company matters every day, swamped with work. I don’t have the time to deal with household affairs! We have a financial department for that; you can ask them!” Xu Deming replied.

Xie Bingyan found it hard to believe that Xu Deming hadn’t given any money. She exclaimed, “If he didn’t have money on him, would he dare to leave home? He must have had a lot of money on him!”

With that, she picked up her phone and made a call. “Hello, Xiao Li, how much money does the financial department give each child every month? How much does Xu Mo receive?”

“What? Oh, okay, I see. Are you sure about that?” Xie Bingyan’s expression showed a hint of surprise.

“Yes, Madam, according to your instructions, it has always been five hundred per month! It hasn’t changed over the years!” the voice on the other end of the phone replied.

“Okay, I see,” Xie Bingyan ended the call, her brow furrowed in thought.

“How much?” Xu Wanting stared at her mother, a hint of nervousness in her expression.

Xie Bingyan looked at everyone and sighed, “Five hundred! Xiao Li said that for the past four years, it’s been five hundred every month! I remember saying that, fearing he’d be reckless with money when he first arrived, so five hundred could keep his spending in check!”

“Incredible…” With these words, everyone took a sharp intake of breath.

Especially Xu Wanting and Xu Pandi, who both wore expressions of astonishment.

“Five hundred? He’s only given five hundred every month?” Xu Deming was clearly taken aback as well.

Xie Bingyan scoffed, “He’s clumsy and has all sorts of bad habits. His hands and feet are dirty, and he’s always stealing things. Giving him five hundred is already too much! As long as he doesn’t starve, it’s fine!”

I like that the smarter ones are realizing they fucked up. If only to protect their reputation and face… lol.

Pity the dumber ones haven’t quite caught on yet.
