Chapter 17: Attempting to Confiscate the Dowry
“Master Yun, how can you do this? What wrong did your sister do? Why would you make her become a nun?”
“That’s right, Master Yun, your sister is a pitiful soul. She already suffered enough marrying such a man, how can you still force her to become a nun?”
“If you ask me, there’s something wrong with your family. You found her such a husband, and she ended up getting divorced after only a month of marriage. If you want to talk about responsibility, it’s your family’s responsibility.”
Yunfeng’s face grew even darker as he listened to everyone pleading for Yunzhi and blaming the Yun family.
Just as he was about to retort, he heard the sound of the front door opening behind him.
Yunfeng turned his head to look. The onlookers did the same, all turning towards the front door.
At this moment, they saw Mrs. Xu being supported by someone as she walked out of the front door. Besides her own trusted maids and mamas, there was also the matchmaker, Mrs. Ma, who had been sent by Yunzhi to deliver a message earlier.
Mrs. Ma saw the line of carriages outside and looked around for Yunzhi. Soon, she found her, and taking advantage of the fact that Mrs. Xu and those around her were not paying attention, she quickly ran over.
Yunzhi looked at Mrs. Ma and saw that she had something to say, so she immediately asked, “What’s going on?”
“Miss, this servant is incompetent and failed to carry out your instructions.” Mrs. Ma looked full of guilt. She had wanted to come out earlier, but she was being watched by Mrs. Xu’s people and couldn’t get out.
The reason she came out now was because the people following Yunfeng and Lin Meijiao heard Yunfeng give Mrs. Xu an excuse about being sick from anger.
Logically, since Mrs. Xu was sick from anger, she should be resting in bed. However, she was thinking about Yunzhi’s dowry and wanted to turn it into her second daughter’s.
Therefore, she came out despite being sick.
Of course, Mrs. Ma didn’t know this, and she thought Mrs. Xu had finally had a change of heart.
“It’s okay, I know it’s not your fault.” Yunzhi comforted Mrs. Ma before asking, “What’s going on? Why did Mother come out?”
“I’m not too sure. Just now, Madam suddenly thought of something and wanted to come out.”
“Then you can go back.” Yunzhi saw that Mrs. Ma truly didn’t know, so she didn’t make things difficult for her. However, her intuition told her that Mrs. Xu’s coming out wouldn’t be good.
Sure enough, just as the onlookers and Mrs. Ma thought Mrs. Xu had changed her mind and was ready to welcome Yunzhi back home, Mrs. Xu spoke.
First, she raised her head and looked at Yunzhi. Her pale, bloodless face was a testament to how Yunzhi had truly angered her.
After all, for the sake of her daughter, Mrs. Xu had come out despite being sick.
Then, she coughed a few times, putting on a weak appearance before saying to Yunzhi, “You wicked daughter, look at what you’ve done. Not only have you angered me, but you’ve also harmed the other girls in the family. Now, since you’re going to be a nun, your dowry is useless to you. Take it back home. It’ll be compensation for those girls you’ve implicated, even though you’ve done wrong.”
She wanted to take Yunzhi’s dowry but pretended to be righteous. Not only Yunzhi, but the onlookers were also shocked.
They’d seen shameless people before, but they’d never seen anyone as shameless as this. Before, they thought Yunfeng was bad enough, but it turned out Mrs. Xu, the mother, was even worse.
She wouldn’t let Yunzhi enter the house, forced her to become a nun, and even wanted to take back her dowry. This was truly pushing her to the brink.
