Chapter 29: The Regent’s Wife

Yuncheng, his heart pounding with excitement, stared at the eunuch approaching him. “Eunuch,” he stammered, “what is this?”

Zhou Dehai, the eunuch, gave Yuncheng a cold glance. “What are you waiting for? Go inform your master. The imperial decree has arrived.”

Yuncheng’s excitement grew. “The decree is for me!” he thought.

But as he finished listening to Zhou Dehai’s words, he felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He stood rooted to the spot, unable to process what he had just heard.

“Did the eunuch just say to inform my master?”

The eunuch had treated him like a servant and delivered the decree to Yunzhi?

Seeing Yuncheng’s dumbfounded expression, Zhou Dehai frowned. He was about to repeat himself when Rumei emerged.

She was taken aback at the sight of the eunuch. “Greetings, Eunuch. What brings you here?”

“I am here to deliver an imperial decree to the master of this household. Quickly inform your master to come and receive it.”

“Yes, Eunuch. I will send someone to inform her. Please follow me,” Rumei said, leading the eunuch to the front courtyard, where Yuncheng had just been.

Yuncheng couldn’t leave. Even though he wasn’t part of the household, he had to kneel and receive the decree when it arrived.

He followed the eunuch and the others back to the front courtyard.

Yunzhi was shocked to hear that an imperial decree had arrived. She was a recently divorced woman. Why would the palace send a decree at this time?

Confused, she decided to stop thinking and went to the front courtyard.

She had been in the front courtyard earlier, but had just returned to the back courtyard. She hadn’t even sat down when she had to go back again.

When she arrived at the front courtyard, everyone in the household was already there, including Yuncheng.

Yunzhi frowned at the sight of him. “Why hasn’t this man left?” she thought.

But she couldn’t chase him away now. She had to receive the decree first.

“Is everyone here?” Zhou Dehai asked when he saw Yunzhi.

After receiving a confirmation, he unfolded the imperial decree and addressed Yunzhi. “Yunzhi, receive the decree!”

Yunzhi nodded but didn’t kneel. Zhou Dehai looked at her, wanting to say something. But remembering the emperor’s temper, he swallowed his words.

“Forget it,” he thought. “I’m just here to deliver the decree. It’s best not to cause any trouble.”

Yuncheng, however, was unaware of this. He had already knelt down. Seeing Yunzhi standing there, he was anxious. He wanted to scold her, to make her kneel, but he dared not be disrespectful in front of Zhou Dehai.

But if Yunzhi didn’t kneel, he feared Zhou Dehai would be angry, affecting him and the entire Yun family.

Yunzhi, however, was oblivious to Yuncheng’s anxieties. As the Dark Emperor, she would never kneel to anyone, not even the current emperor.

Zhou Dehai quickly read the decree, then walked towards Yunzhi, handing her the decree. He smiled and said, “Regent’s Wife, please receive the decree!”

Yunzhi looked at the decree in her hand, bewildered. She had never imagined that this would be a decree of marriage, and that the person she was being married to would be the Regent.

At this moment, she wasn’t happy. Instead, she felt this might be a conspiracy.
