Chapter 100: School Report

Wen Jiajia became the center of attention in the family compound again. When Wei Dai returned home, people excitedly told him that his wife had been admitted to Fudan University, the best university in the East.

Wei Dai was initially confused but then thrilled, running home in excitement.

When he arrived, there were quite a few people at home, all there to celebrate.

“Jia Jia, Jia Jia!” Wei Dai called out as he entered the door.

Wen Jiajia replied, “Why are you shouting? Your daughter is just taking a nap.”

Xiaomei didn’t understand what an admission letter was. She was so upset after being pushed away that she was sweating. When Wen Jiajia found her, she was already very angry. She crossed her arms over her chest and ignored Wen Jiajia.

At nap time, Xiaomei went to her room on her own and no longer asked Wen Jiajia to coax her. It seemed she needed the nap to calm down.

Seeing Wei Dai return, the others tactfully left.

As a young couple, they needed to celebrate privately, so they didn’t stay and risk being intrusive.

“Here, this is my admission letter,” Wen Jiajia said proudly, handing the letter to Wei Dai.

However, Wei Dai didn’t rush over, as Wen Jiajia had expected. Instead, he went to the yard to wash his hands and then dried them before taking the thin admission letter with a serious expression.

In his hands, the admission letter felt like fragile glass. This light piece of paper seemed to weigh a thousand pounds.

“That’s not necessary,” Wen Jiajia said, surprised. “It’s just a piece of paper. It won’t break even if it falls to the ground.”

Wei Dai showed a disapproving expression. “This is the first admission letter in our family, and it’s from such a prestigious school. It deserves respect.”

“…”

“Okay,” Wen Jiajia said, her excitement fading into calm.

Wei Dai carefully read the letter several times before returning it to her. “Please keep it in the drawer and lock it. I’ve heard that without the admission letter, you can’t go to school.”

Wen Jiajia was surprised. “Really?”

It was that serious? She hadn’t known!

So, she quickly put the admission letter back into the envelope, placed it in a drawer in her room, sandwiched it with books, and finally locked it.

She then told Wei Dai where she had put the letter to avoid forgetting.

Wen Jiajia’s admission to Fudan University was a major topic of discussion for over a week until the second batch of admission letters arrived.

She was also familiar with the other person who passed the exam—Xiao Ping.

Xiao Ping was the girl who had not been in good health and whom Wen Jiajia had referred to the hospital.

Xiao Ping was very determined. After the resumption of college entrance exams, she attended tutoring classes every day, lived in a dormitory at the school, and studied hard around the clock.

Her efforts paid off. She received an admission letter from the Normal School in a neighboring province.

When Xiao Ping’s admission letter arrived, her mother’s joyful voice could be heard in Beishan.

In addition to Wen Jiajia and Xiao Ping, another boy also received an admission letter.

He was accepted into a school in the southwest, studying animal husbandry. This school was the farthest from home.

Since the school was far away, his notification letter arrived later than others’.

For example, Wen Jiajia’s school was in Hai City, with daily bus services, so she received her letter quickly.

As for him, Wen Jiajia was about to report when his notification letter finally arrived.

The boy was almost in despair. If it weren’t for the scheduled physical examination, he would have had to pack up and prepare for the next year.

There are only three days left until school starts.

Wen Jiajia has been packing her luggage recently. She plans to live on campus during her freshman year and move out afterward.

By then, she hopes to be familiar with the area around the school and find a suitable house.

Wei Dai was extremely excited some time ago, but as the start of school approached, he began to feel reluctant to let her go.

“I’ll come to see you when I have time,” he said.

Wen Jiajia, who was squatting on the ground and stuffing clothes into her bag, quickly responded, “You’d better come when you have time. Two or three times a semester is enough. Train tickets are quite expensive, and I’ll also be looking for houses in Hai City.”

Wei Dai frowned. “Two or three times a semester is too little. I’m worried about you.”

Wen Jiajia laughed. “I’m an adult in my 20s, just going to school. Why are you worried about me?”

“I’m worried that you’ll be bullied.”

“…Please stop talking. We’re here to learn, not to bully others. How could I be bullied?” Wen Jiajia was genuinely shocked by his words.

She then turned serious. “Don’t come here too often. I still say the same thing—save more money. I want to buy a house.”

Wei Dai didn’t understand Wen Jiajia’s obsession with buying a house in Hai City, but he nodded anyway, as it was clear she wasn’t open to negotiation.

Satisfied, Wen Jiajia continued packing.

She didn’t pack many clothes, mainly because Hai City was nearby and she could send more if needed.

Apart from that, she only packed some daily necessities, which fit into half a box.

She planned to buy a large thermos bottle once she arrived in Hai City, fearing it might break if transported from home.

In the end, she found that one suitcase and one bag were enough to carry her belongings. Without the bag, her luggage was almost the same as when she was on a business trip, just a bit heavier.

On the day before reporting to school, Wen Jiajia set off.

At 5:30 in the morning, she left with Wei Dai, who insisted on accompanying her to Hai City.

Wen Jiajia refused, but Wei Dai was adamant, saying it was the price for not allowing him to visit her often.

Feeling guilty, Wen Jiajia agreed.

Wen Chun and Wen Xuan had also wanted to go, but since school was starting for them, they had to go to school with their backpacks.

As for Xiaomei, she naturally stayed at home. No one wanted to take care of a child on a long trip, not even Wei Dai, who was very fond of his daughter.

The couple went to the train station and arrived in Hai City that night.

Wen Jiajia was pleasantly surprised at how much faster the trip was this time, although she didn’t know why.

“Let’s go to a guesthouse first,” Wei Dai suggested. “We should find a place nearby to stay.”

Given Wen Jiajia’s experience as a frequent business traveler, she said, “The nearby guesthouses will probably be full. We should go a bit farther away.”

After thinking for a moment, she decided, “Come with me on the bus. I know where there’s a good hostel.”

Wen Jiajia was more familiar with Hai City than Wei Dai, so he followed her obediently. Luckily, there was a bus at that time, which made things easier.

After five stops, they arrived near the Chemical Machinery Factory.

Wen Jiajia said softly after getting off, “Since people often come here on business, there’s a guesthouse with a good environment. The bus goes directly to Yangpu District. Oh, and the school is in Yangpu District.”

As they talked, they walked a short distance and entered an alley where the guesthouse was hidden.

Wen Jiajia had stayed here twice before. She remembered the front desk clerk, who also remembered her.

“Comrade Wen?” the girl at the front desk recognized her and said it with a sudden realization.

Wen Jiajia smiled and said, “Yes, it’s me. I’m here to stay again. This is my husband, Wei Dai.”

The girl at the front desk stood up. “Really? Hello, Comrade Wei. Please provide your letter of introduction and marriage certificate.”

The letter was with Wei Dai, so he took it out of his inner pocket and handed it to her.

The front desk clerk, curious while registering, asked, “Comrade Wen, are you here on a business trip again? Is your husband in the same unit as you?”

That didn’t seem right; the letter of introduction was issued by the army.

Wen Jiajia explained, “No, I came to Hai City to attend university. My husband is just accompanying me.”

The girl at the front desk’s eyes widened. “Really? Congratulations, Comrade Wen. It’s so difficult to get into university. My neighbor studied hard but still didn’t succeed. By the way, which university did you get into? Is it near me?”

“Fudan University,” Wen Jiajia said, thinking for a moment. “It’s probably quite close.”

The front desk clerk laughed and handed them the key. “You’re amazing! It’s not that close; you’ll need to take the bus for more than half an hour. But my home is nearby, so it only takes me 20 minutes to walk to your school.”

Wen Jiajia thought to herself, This is definitely a “school district house.”

Since they weren’t very familiar with each other, there was no further conversation.

Once in the room, Wen Jiajia couldn’t help but take off her coat and collapse on the bed.

Having sat on a hard seat all day, her butt and waist felt sore.

The couple didn’t feel like doing anything special the night before parting, so they went to bed right after showering, almost falling asleep as soon as they touched the pillow.

The next day, Wen Jiajia took Wei Dai out for fried dumplings before heading to school.

At the school gate, there were already many people coming and going, with many standing around taking pictures. This made Wen Jiajia envious.

She muttered, “If I had known, I would have bought a camera.”

However, Wei Dai was quick-thinking. He ran over to borrow a camera. Although she didn’t hear what he said, he managed to bring the boy taking pictures over.

Wen Jiajia was still stunned when Wei Dai pushed her to the school gate and, with a “click,” took a photo of her, looking extremely surprised.

Then Wei Dai ran back to her and put his hand on her shoulder.

Another click…

Wen Jiajia felt extremely embarrassed to leave her photos on someone else’s camera, but Wei Dai thought it was perfectly normal.

After Wen Jiajia finished her registration, Wei Dai left her the classmate’s name and said he would give her the developed photos later.

On the way to the dormitory, Wen Jiajia couldn’t help asking, “How did that classmate agree? Film is quite expensive.”

Wei Dai replied, “We’re classmates from the same school, and he’s very enthusiastic! But I didn’t want to take advantage of him, so I gave him a food coupon.”

Wen Jiajia’s mouth twitched. It seemed like money was the solution to everything.

When she arrived at the dormitory, Wen Jiajia was quite satisfied with the conditions.

The dormitory was on the second floor, which saved a lot of time climbing stairs, but there would definitely be many mosquitoes in the summer.

Then again, even today’s buildings are not very tall, and mosquitoes can be found on the third and fourth floors as well.

Wen Jiajia was the second person to arrive in the dormitory. After greeting the first roommate, she chose a bed.

She picked up the upper bunk on the right side of the balcony door without hesitation. It was a very good location.

Wei Dai said, “Why don’t you sleep on the lower bunk? It’s easy to fall from the upper bunk.”

He was especially worried because Wen Jiajia didn’t sleep very still; he was concerned she might fall during the night.

Wen Jiajia was not pleased. If she slept on the lower bunk, the bed would be easily used by others, which she didn’t like.

“Oh, just go install the mosquito net,” Wen Jiajia said, pushing Wei Dai. “Let me wring out the towel and help me wipe the bed board and the wall.”

Wei Dai wanted to say something, but seeing Wen Jiajia’s impatience, he didn’t dare say anything, fearing his waist might get twisted.

The roommate next to her laughed softly and said, “Your husband is quite obedient.”

This roommate, Jiang Ruowang, didn’t look young—she appeared to be in her 30s—but she was actually only 28. Wen Jiajia guessed she must be a young person who had worked in the countryside.

Wen Jiajia smiled awkwardly and said modestly, “He just listens.”

While chatting, Wen Jiajia twisted her handkerchief. Jiang Ruowang, who had been an educated youth, worked with the Construction Corps. Compared to rural life, the construction corps had a major advantage: a fairly generous salary.

She saved a lot of money over the years and became an accountant due to her excellent calculation skills. Despite the heavy workload, she had enough food and clothing. Many people couldn’t endure it and began living together, but she lived her life peacefully until the college entrance examination was resumed.

Wen Jiajia couldn’t help but repeatedly praise her. “Sister Jiang, you’re amazing. If it were me, I probably wouldn’t have the same perseverance.”

Wei Dai finished wiping the bed, spread the mattress and sheets, and placed the quilt and pillow on the bed.

The mosquito net was installed. Additionally, Wen Jiajia set up a small bed curtain so she could change clothes directly on the bed in the future.

She had a habit of changing into pajamas. If she didn’t, she had to run to the bathroom every morning and evening, which was too troublesome.

The bed curtain consisted of two pieces of cloth but created a small, separate space. Jiang Ruowang’s eyes lit up, and she asked Wen Jiajia, “Where did you buy it? I want to buy one and hang it up too.”

Wen Jiajia replied, “I made it myself. I have more at home. I’ll ask my husband to send them to me when he gets home.”

Bed curtains are really simple to make—just cut the cotton cloth, seal the edges, and punch a few holes.

Her family didn’t have much except cloth, so Wen Jiajia made four bed curtains but only brought two with her.

She initially planned to use them interchangeably. If Jiang Ruowang wanted one, she could sell it to her. Wen Jiajia hoped to save enough money to buy a small house nearby during college.

Jiang Ruowang said uncomfortably, “Forget it, it’s too much trouble for you.”

Wen Jiajia insisted, “It’s okay. My home is in Linhe, very close to here. Since I’ll be sending things anyway, it’s no trouble.”

Since Wen Jiajia said so, Jiang Ruowang stopped refusing and quickly agreed.

Soon, more people arrived, and the dormitory was filled with six people, leaving only the best two beds vacant.

Wen Jiajia didn’t stay in the dormitory for long. After unpacking, she took Wei Dai to tour the school.

The school had a long history, and strolling leisurely there was a very enjoyable experience.

The leaves had sprouted, signaling the start of a new cycle. Wen Jiajia was ready to study hard for the next four years.

In the evening, Wei Dai reluctantly left.

Before leaving, he pulled Wen Jiajia aside and said, “Don’t just focus on studying and forget to eat.”

She had been like this while preparing for the college entrance examination.

“Don’t read on the bed; it’s bad for your eyes… Oh, and one more thing: if any of your roommates use candles, don’t hesitate to tell the dormitory manager. If there’s a fire, it could hurt both others and yourself.” Wei Dai frowned, clearly troubled by the thought of candles being used in the dormitory.

Wen Jiajia nodded vigorously, her face serious. She would never risk her safety due to others!
