Chapter 3 – Let’s Get a Divorce…
Just as she was about to lunge at Zhao Hongjun, her body suddenly froze. Before she could get up, she collapsed weakly to the ground.
Then, her eyes rolled back, and she began to convulse violently, foaming at the mouth.
“She’s going into convulsions! Help her—quick!” someone shouted.
“Does anyone know first aid?!”
Zhao Hongjun was stunned, kneeling beside Xu Lili in a panic, completely at a loss.
Seeing how dire the situation was, Ning Wanwan spoke up anxiously.
“Everyone, don’t panic! I’m a medical student—listen to my instructions!”
“Captain Zhao, unbutton your wife’s collar and turn her onto her side!”
“Okay!” Zhao Hongjun quickly followed her instructions.
Then Ning Wanwan looked around and called out, “Ladies, does anyone have any acupuncture needles?”
The crowd immediately started murmuring, confused about why she’d want acupuncture needles at a time like this.
“I have some! I bought a packet just the other day!”
A thin and dark-skinned military wife pushed her way over, holding a full packet of acupuncture needles.
Ning Wanwan took them, and everyone’s astonished eyes fell on her hands as she held the needles.
He Yunshen’s eyes suddenly widened, full of disbelief. “Ning Wanwan, don’t—!”
But before he could stop her, Ning Wanwan had already bent down and accurately inserted the first needle into the Hegu point on Xu Lili’s right hand.
Her gaze briefly lingered on the man’s face. She could tell he didn’t trust her.
But in such a critical moment, she had no time to explain. In a smooth, practiced motion, she inserted all the needles precisely into the correct acupoints, leaving the nearby military wives dumbfounded.
He Yunshen, who had originally raised his hand to stop her, lowered it, his dark eyes fixed on her profile.
Wasn’t she supposed to be ignorant and useless? And now she’s saving someone?
Before he could figure it out, the convulsing Xu Lili suddenly calmed down. Her eyes, which had rolled back, slowly returned to normal.
Li Ping looked at Xu Lili’s color and said excitedly, “She’s coming around! Ning really knows medicine—you’re amazing!”
Zhang Yun and several other wives chimed in happily, “Yes, yes! We had no idea Ning knew medicine. She’s really been hiding her talents!”
He Yunshen’s confused gaze landed on Ning Wanwan’s back as he stared at the few acupuncture needles in her hand, falling into deep thought.
Two minutes later, Xu Lili suddenly gasped loudly and regained consciousness.
Zhao Hongjun wiped away tears and gently helped Xu Lili sit up, helping her catch her breath. Then he stood and thanked Ning Wanwan.
Xu Lili knew Ning Wanwan had saved her and felt deeply conflicted. She kept her head down, saying nothing.
She thought to herself, She’s the one who slapped me, and now she’s the one who saved me. What a tactic—hit with one hand, offer a sweet date with the other.
“Captain Zhao, take your wife back to rest and calm down. Let’s talk about this tomorrow.”
Ning Wanwan let out a long breath, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and gathered up all the needles.
So much had happened today—she needed to sort things out and couldn’t waste time tangling with a madwoman like Xu Lili.
Otherwise, this “Ning Wanwan” with a swapped soul might get exposed at any time.
And if she got caught, who knew what kind of experimentation she’d be subjected to? She cherished her life far too much for that.
She also had to figure out how to fix this paralysis. There was no way she was going to spend the rest of her life disabled.
The other wives chimed in as well, “Yes, Captain Zhao, take her back. She’s in no shape to explain anything right now.”
“Exactly—let her rest. Ning is injured too,” Zhang Yun said, glancing at the bump on Ning Wanwan’s forehead.
Zhao Hongjun nodded and helped the weak Xu Lili away.
The others slowly dispersed, leaving only Zhang Yun and He Yunshen.
Zhang Yun, ever helpful, spoke up, “Commander He, I can help send Ning back.”
He Yunshen was about to decline when Ning Wanwan gently interrupted him with a smile.
“Thank you, sister, but that’s not necessary—we can go back ourselves.”
Zhang Yun was surprised. Even though Ning Wanwan was paralyzed, she had always been proud and aloof, never sparing them, these wives from the countryside, a second glance.
She had reason to be arrogant too—her husband was capable, and both of them had Beijing hukou.
This was the first time she’d ever heard her call her “sister” so warmly.
Embarrassed, Zhang Yun blushed and quickly excused herself.
She couldn’t wait to tell the other women—Ning Wanwan had really changed.
Ning Wanwan, unaware of Zhang Yun’s thoughts, kindly reminded her to walk slowly.
He Yunshen’s suspicious gaze once again fell on the top of Ning Wanwan’s head, but he said nothing as he silently pushed her wheelchair home.
He knew how much she had despised these military wives before—always complaining about their narrow-mindedness at home.
This sudden change was… intriguing.
They lived in a small courtyard house provided by the military.
There was a lush grapevine trellis in the yard. He Yunshen parked her beneath it and went inside.
Only then did Ning Wanwan raise her hand to touch the swollen bump on her forehead. The sharp pain made her hiss.
What a huge bump—almost disfigured. No wonder the original owner of this body had died from the fall.
It was the forehead, after all—a fragile area. The original soul had it rough.
But so did she! The original soul was gone, so why did she have to transmigrate?
Back in the 21st century, she had been the youngest medical prodigy, excelling in both Western and traditional Chinese medicine. Her future was bright.
Sure, being good at both Western and Chinese medicine was rare—but she was just that eccentric.
Her father had been a world-renowned Western doctor, while her sweet mom was a true-blue old-school traditional Chinese physician.
Her parents even nearly divorced over what medical major she should take.
For the sake of peace, she had suffered half a month of migraines before choosing to major in Western medicine and minor in TCM.
Even then, her mom wasn’t satisfied and tried to trick her into changing majors. But Ning Wanwan had always preferred Western medicine, so that was that.
Before she transmigrated, she had been one night away from receiving her PhD in TCM.
Her advisor had even prepared champagne in advance to celebrate.
She had just spent a long night in the lab and was heading home when she was in a car accident—and woke up in this bizarre period novel.
Could her life get any more tragic?
When He Yunshen came out with the medical kit, he saw Ning Wanwan puffing out her cheeks in frustration, lost in thought.
He said nothing, silently tending to the scrapes on her hands.
Ning Wanwan lowered her head and quietly observed how his hands weren’t exactly gentle. Then she cautiously opened her mouth.
“Um… how about we get a divorce?”
