Chapter 5: Setting the Rules
“Ah—!”
At exactly ten o’clock that night, Jiang Yuchen finally heard the miserable scream he had been waiting for.
But it didn’t come from Lu Yunsheng—it came from himself!
—
“Ninth Master, the young master was hit by a ladder…”
The butler ran to the study door to report.
Jiang Beiting opened the door, his face as dark as the King of Hell. “Did you call an ambulance?”
“The ambulance will arrive in three minutes.”
“Good.”
Jiang Beiting quickly went downstairs and rushed to the scene.
Madam Jiang was squatting beside her son in a bathrobe, calling his name anxiously, “Yuchen, Yuchen! It’s Mom, can you hear me?”
“Let me take a look.”
Jiang Beiting’s voice came from behind. Madam Jiang didn’t hesitate at all and immediately made way.
Everyone in the Jiang family knew Jiang Beiting’s abilities—he was exceptional in all aspects, including medicine.
He gently pressed his fingers to Jiang Yuchen’s nose and the tension in his brows eased. “He’s fine.”
At most, his neck muscles were strained, and he had temporarily passed out.
Madam Jiang breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you, Ninth Brother… Yuchen has really been…”
She trailed off, while the trembling bodyguard beside her had already confessed everything.
What Jiang Yuchen had tried to do to Lu Yunsheng in the middle of the night was now completely exposed.
Madam Jiang was full of regret. Not long ago, she had just spoken kindly to Lu Yunsheng to coax her, yet now her own son had taken the lead in acting nice on the surface while going against it in secret… Her reputation had been utterly ruined by her son.
Jiang Beiting said calmly, “Take him to the hospital first.”
Three minutes later, the ambulance arrived.
Jiang Yuchen was carried away on a stretcher, with Madam Jiang and the butler following behind.
Jiang Beiting remained where he was, looking up toward the second floor, his expression growing increasingly dark.
—
Lu Yunsheng was well aware of what was happening outside the window, but she didn’t care much. She was on the phone with Aunt Ming, a neighbor from her hometown.
“Shengsheng, your grandmother’s complexion is still very dark. She’s tired all the time and just lies in bed after eating. Sigh…”
Hearing Aunt Ming’s words, a shadow fell over Lu Yunsheng’s eyes.
She had relied on her grandmother her whole life, through hardship and wandering.
When she was five, her grandmother taught her how to divine for the first time. At the time, she had innocently asked, “If I learn fortune-telling, does that mean I’ll never go hungry again?”
Her grandmother had smiled and reassured her, “Of course. We may not be scholars, but once you’ve mastered this skill, as long as you’re brave enough to go up on the overpass, you won’t starve!”
“Overpass? What kind of place is that?”
“[1]A holy land for begging! “讨米圣地” is a humorous or sarcastic way of referring to a place (like an overpass or busy street) where people go to beg for food or money, treating it as if it … Continue readingA holy land for begging!!”
“Oh.”
Inspired by the idea of a “holy land,” she followed her grandmother and studied the art of divination diligently for fifteen years, eventually becoming the second “jinx” of the village after her grandmother.
Until her grandmother fell ill…
That night, under a tree, Lu Yunsheng cried while digging a grave for her grandmother—and was struck by lightning.
At that moment, an unprecedented spiritual power awakened within her. Not only did her divination skills reach new heights, but she also inexplicably mastered all those mystical arts she had only read about in books!
She even saw the life energy emanating from her grandmother’s forehead—clear proof that her grandmother’s natural lifespan had not yet ended!
Her grandmother had weakly told her about this marriage.
And firmly declared—it was a destined tribulation!
It had to be resolved by her…
So, in order to save her grandmother, even if Jiang Yuchen drove her away or released snakes to bite her, she still had to marry him!
Inside the bedroom, Lu Yunsheng wiped the corner of her eyes with the back of her hand and gently said into the phone, “Aunt Ming, thank you for taking care of my grandma. In a little while, she should start to recover.”
“Mhm, Shengsheng, you must take care of yourself while you’re away, and stay safe.”
“I will. Thank you, Aunt Ming.”
Just as Lu Yunsheng hung up the phone, she suddenly heard—
Knock knock knock!
There was knocking at the door. She didn’t need to guess who it was.
Lu Yunsheng walked to the door and calmly opened it.
Standing outside was the tall, imposing Jiang Beiting. She looked at him without changing her expression and said, “Every cause has its effect—what happened today isn’t my fault.”
Jiang Beiting frowned. “I just came to see if you were frightened.”
Although he said that, his gaze swept into her room, as if surveying an enemy’s stronghold.
Hearing his words, Lu Yunsheng softened her tone. “Thank you for your concern, Ninth Master. I wasn’t.”
Jiang Beiting could also see it—this quiet, cool girl wasn’t the least bit frightened. She could even control snakes with ease!
His voice deepened. “As the future young madam of the Jiang family, mind your boundaries from now on. Don’t hurt your own people. Understand?”
“I understand.”
Jiang Beiting was clearly defending his nephew regardless of right or wrong. But since Lu Yunsheng was in a hurry to get married, she wouldn’t argue with him!
Perhaps seeing that her attitude was still decent, Jiang Beiting didn’t reprimand her further.
“Go to bed early.”
After saying that, he turned and left.
Lu Yunsheng, however, didn’t sleep at all that night.
She tossed and turned on the luxurious bed, thinking about her grandmother sleeping on a hard wooden bed. The more she thought about it, the more she felt that she’d been too impulsive today.
What if Jiang Yuchen had been seriously hurt from the fall and the marriage was called off? Wouldn’t her grandmother be in danger then?
Mm, she’d have to control her temper from now on!
—
The next morning, at dawn, she got herself ready in just a minute—neatly styled hair, T-shirt and jeans, and a composed expression as she walked downstairs.
The butler came forward and said, “Miss Lu, the Ninth Master said that after you come down, you should go directly to the dining room for breakfast.”
“Alright.”
Just after she responded, the butler added, “The Young Master is having difficulty moving at the hospital, and Madam is accompanying him. Today, the Ninth Master will take you to the bridal shop in his place.”
Lu Yunsheng: “?”
The uncle replacing his nephew to take the fiancée to a bridal shop? Was that really appropriate?
But if Jiang Beiting didn’t mind, she figured it was fine too—as long as the marriage could happen, that was what mattered.
She headed to the dining room.
Inside, Jiang Beiting was having breakfast.
He was neatly dressed, composed in demeanor, and moved with elegance. When he saw Lu Yunsheng, his expression was calm as he said, “Come eat.”
The atmosphere was so harmonious, it was as if nothing had happened the night before, and as if his nephew Jiang Yuchen had never landed in the hospital…
Lu Yunsheng felt somewhat comforted—this fiancé’s uncle, Jiang Beiting, although he had ignored right and wrong last night, wasn’t all that bad… right?
She no longer felt restrained and quickly took a seat, ready to eat.
Suddenly, she heard Jiang Beiting ask, “Miss Lu, are you full?”
Lu Yunsheng’s face froze. “Ninth Master, I haven’t eaten yet.”
But Jiang Beiting acted like he hadn’t heard her at all, and coldly ordered, “Time’s up. Butler, clear the table.”
“?”
Lu Yunsheng’s hand, still holding chopsticks mid-air, froze and wouldn’t move for a long while.
The butler awkwardly stepped forward and reached out. “Miss Lu, please hand me the chopsticks…”
Lu Yunsheng looked at the table full of delicious pastries and swallowed hard.
She handed over the pair of chopsticks that hadn’t even warmed in her hands yet, and right in front of Jiang Beiting, grabbed two pastries with her hands and shoved one into each cheek.
While chewing with puffed-out cheeks, she didn’t forget to reach for a third pastry.
Suddenly, a chopstick flew over from Jiang Beiting’s direction and struck the back of her hand with a loud smack.
“Ah!”
Lu Yunsheng cried out from the pain and instinctively pulled her hand back, but still gritted through it—taking advantage of the servant clearing the table, she quickly snatched another pastry and stuffed it into her mouth.
In an instant, the table was clean, polished to a shine.
She chewed silently.
And simultaneously took back what she had just thought—Jiang Beiting was truly a bastard!
