I’ve also been the school grass since I was little (1)
Yue Qianling stared at the transfer record for several seconds before confirming that the money transfer was indeed real and not some prank or meme.
She pursed her lips and inexplicably decided to return the money.
She had seen people who were naive and had too much money, but she had never seen anyone who was both so naive and had so much money when it came to online friends.
A few months ago, Yue Qianling’s regular PUBG team had fallen apart. Some were preparing for postgraduate exams, while others had simply given up gaming. Suddenly, even finding a duo partner had become a challenge for her.
One evening, while lying on her dormitory bed, she randomly matched with this “School Grass” and his two friends.
After playing a round together, Yue Qianling realized that this person had great synergy with her, so she invited them for a few more rounds and added them as in-game friends.
Later on, whenever she had free time to play games, she noticed that whenever they were teaming up, they would always invite her to join their team.
Over time, they exchanged WeChat contacts, and they often asked her to join them in playing games.
However, Yue Qianling was certain that they invited her not because they wanted a girl to play with.
It was because she was genuinely skilled.
After all, she never experienced any special treatment in the team.
As for why she had him saved as “School Grass” in her contacts, it was because when they first met, his two friends used to tease him like that.
After returning the money, Yue Qianling immediately put on her headphones and logged into the game.
Her dormitory wasn’t fully occupied to begin with, and Fang Qingqing was doing an internship in a remote location, so she had rented a place outside. Plus, Yin Xue was working overtime today, so there was only Yue Qianling in the dormitory, making it very quiet.
After Yue Qianling joined the team and noticed one person missing, she asked, “Why did Lin Xun urgently call me to join, but he hasn’t logged in himself?”
Lin Xun, who was also known as the “School Grass.”
Yue Qianling didn’t know the exact characters used to write those two words, but in any case, that’s what both Luo Tuo and Xiao Mai called him normally.
“I don’t know why he’s dragging his feet,” Luo Tuo said. “Are you not working overtime today?”
Luo Tuo should be the oldest of the three, with a rough and hearty voice that sounded like he was around thirty years old.
While Yue Qianling was changing her appearance in the game, she said, “I quit my job.”
“Huh?” Xiao Mai, whose voice sounded more childlike, exclaimed, “You quit?!”
Yue Qianling responded with a simple “Hmm,” turned on her desk lamp, and casually added, “Let’s play Rainforest this time.”
Suddenly, a voice came through her headset.
“Why did you quit suddenly?”
Yue Qianling lowered her gaze to look at her phone interface.
Sure enough, Lin Xun had come online.
His voice was lazy, carrying a hint of nonchalance, accompanied by a subtle electric undertone that made one’s ears tingle slightly.
It inexplicably reminded Yue Qianling of what Gu Xun had said to her earlier today, “Are you here to report for work too?”
The same tone, the same speed, and even the slightly trailing intonation were similar.
It was quite a coincidence.
Similar voices, the nickname “School Grass,” and even their names both had “Xun” in them.
If it weren’t for one having the surname “Lin” and the other “Gu”, Yue Qianling would almost have thought that the internet couldn’t resist trying to match her with Gu Xun.
But it was just a fleeting distraction, and Yue Qianling quickly collected her thoughts.
She had come here to shift her attention, so why was she thinking about Gu Xun again?
“Don’t mention it,” she said as she arrived on Spawn Island and started running around. “In this match, let’s go to the training base.”
“Eh, huh? What’s going on?” Luo Tuo complained. “My KD is only around 2.0. If you want me to die, just say it.”
KD refers to the kill-death ratio in this game, and it’s a straightforward measure of a player’s performance. The higher the KD, the better the player’s performance.
Luo Tuo and Xiao Mao were considered new players. They usually followed Yue Qianling and Lin Xun’s lead in the game.
The game they were playing was the popular mobile game called “Peacekeeper Elite”, which was a tactical and competitive shooting-type sandbox game.
In this game, players or their teams needed to collect various combat and survival resources within the game map. They then engage in battles with other players within a shrinking safe zone. The goal was to ensure their own or their team’s survival until the end, which would be considered a victory.
As for the training base, it was located at the center of the rainforest map and contained abundant resources. That’s why many players who enjoyed aggressive gameplay often liked to drop there.
In other words, for players who weren’t experienced, dropping at the training base was basically a death sentence.
While the two were talking, Lin Xun had already led the team to parachute down.
Before landing, Yue Qianling observed the surroundings and said, “There’s a team over there, across from us.”
As soon as she landed at the main building, she picked up an AKM rifle with ammunition and, within a few steps, equipped herself with level 2 armor and a level 3 helmet.
Good enough.
Yue Qianling immediately rushed directly to the place where the other team had landed, picking up an extended magazine on the way.
“Anyone want to come with me to kill the enemies across from us?” she asked.
Xiao Mai was taken aback, “I don’t even have a decent gun yet!”
Yue Qianling replied, “Killing them will get you one.”
“…,”
Luo Tuo and Xiao Mai naturally didn’t follow suit.
However, Lin Xun was even faster than Yue Qianling. By the time she arrived, the enemy team was already engaged in intense combat.
As soon as Yue Qianling joined the fight, she and Lin Xun quickly finished taking the heads of the four opponents.
She leisurely began looting the items, and through her headphones, Luo Tuo asked her, “Xiao Mahua, are you in a bad mood today?”
Yue Qianling remained silent for a moment and then replied with a simple “Hmm.”
Luo Tuo asked, “Is it because you quit your job?”
“No,” Yue Qianling said directly, “I quit my job voluntarily. I couldn’t stand that crappy company anymore.”
Luo Tuo, despite being a straightforward guy, was actually quite perceptive and had noticed Yue Qianling’s downcast mood earlier.
“So why are you unhappy?” he asked.
“Because when I left today—” Yue Qianling was about to explain when she suddenly changed her words, “I hear footsteps!”
She quickly scanned her surroundings, saying, “Seems to be coming from the 70-degree direction!”
As this was the training base, when Yue Qianling called out, everyone became alert, listening to the sound of footsteps through their headphones.
Sure enough, a full enemy squad had arrived, and they with fully equipped weapons and high-level armor from Paradise Resort.
The two teams fought for a long time, and on Yue Qianling’s side, they lost Xiao Mai before finally managing to eliminate the entire enemy squad, albeit at critically low health.
After that encounter, it seemed like everyone had forgotten about the previous topic. They ran towards the safe zone as soon as they had healed up, all the while remaining vigilant and keeping an eye on their surroundings.
While Yue Qianling had indeed scored some kills and collected some player eliminations in the game, her attention still hadn’t shifted.
Whenever there was a lull in the action, she would find herself dwelling on it.
So, while running, she suddenly asked, “What kind of girls do you think guys like?”
Perhaps they didn’t expect Yue Qianling to bring up such a topic out of the blue, but none of the three people on the team said anything.
Yue Qianling entered a housing area, looting items while continuing to speak to herself, “Do guys prefer gentle girls? Intellectual ones? Or the cute and soft type? Lin Xun, what kind of girls do you like?”
Just as she finished speaking, she opened a door and saw an M24 sniper rifle placed not far away. She happily ran towards it.
But it was just one step away when Lin Xun suddenly jumped in from outside the house through a window, snatching the M24 sniper rifle that Yue Qianling was about to pick up.
“Give it back!” Yue Qianling swung a few punches at him and said, “Do you have no manners? I saw this sniper rifle first!”
However, Lin Xun completely ignored her and stood in front of her, arrogantly sorting through the items in his backpack.
After a while, out of nowhere, he said, “Are you pretty?”
