Chapter 10
Huang Jianjun knew that confessing would be better than resisting, and that he could get a reduced sentence for turning himself in. Now, with the evidence being so clear, he could only plead guilty first.
He cooperated fully, extending his hands for the policeman to handcuff him. He wanted to leave this place as quickly as possible, afraid that Zhan Xinyue, who knew the truth, would reveal it on the spot.
The suspect confessed himself, and with the victim and her family members providing evidence, the policeman immediately put handcuffs on Huang Jianjun.
The policeman had come by bicycle, so he could only take one person back. He cleared the area, dismissing the onlookers, then closed the gate of the Zhan family’s courtyard. He recorded statements from the victim, Chen Juxiang, and her family member, Zhan Hongyan, in the courtyard.
The three of them all gave consistent accounts of what happened. The policeman had Chen Juxiang and Zhan Hongyan both sign their names.
“Secretary Liu, I’ll need you to make another trip. You ride behind me and keep an eye on him. Don’t let the criminal suspect escape.”
“Okay.” Secretary Liu agreed and rode his bicycle, one in front and one behind, escorting Huang Jianjun to the police station.
As soon as they left, the crowd gathered again. Today, both the secretary and the company commander were gone, so no one was assigning tasks. Everyone was trying to slack off. This was the downside of collective labor.
Zhan Xinyue didn’t want to give false testimony. As soon as the policeman arrived, she slipped away. Now, she followed the crowd back to the Zhan family’s house.
“Comrades, I have one more important thing to announce.” Zhan Xinyue walked to the front of the crowd and said loudly.
Oh, more gossip!
The crowd was excited. They had gotten one piece of gossip after another this morning.
“Sister Xinyue, tell us. We’re all listening.” A gossipy aunt responded loudly, afraid that Zhan Xinyue would stop talking.
Zhan Xinyue didn’t beat around the bush. She continued, “The reason I know I’m not their biological daughter is because Zhan Hongyan wants to marry Li Jian. She said she’s liked Li Jian for a long time. She said I was adopted. The Zhan family raised me for twenty years, and she wants me to give Li Jian to her as a way of repaying their kindness.”
“Oh, Zhan Hongyan wants to steal her sister’s man. She’s so shameless.”
“No, is Zhan Hongyan sick? Why would she not marry a high-ranking official but want to marry a rough country man who’s poor and has two burdens?”
The crowd was buzzing with discussion, all with confused expressions. In the 1970s, being able to marry a soldier was a very honorable thing, let alone Sheng Tunan, who was a high-ranking official.
Everyone was mocking Zhan Hongyan for being crazy, for not wanting a high-ranking official but wanting a poor country man.
The crowd’s voices were loud. The words “shameless” and “crazy” reached Zhan Hongyan’s ears. An ordinary person would have wanted to find a hole to crawl into, but she was different. She was thick-skinned and, considering herself to be reborn, she knew how rich Li Jian would be in the future.
Therefore, Zhan Hongyan wasn’t embarrassed at all. Instead, she said proudly, “I just like Li Jian. Now, the country advocates free love and opposes arranged marriages. I’m fighting for my own happiness. Humph, you just wait and see. My life will be a hundred times, a thousand times better than yours.”
The crowd was speechless. They were shocked by Zhan Hongyan’s audacity.
“This is unbelievable. I’ve seen shameless people, but I’ve never seen anyone as shameless as this. She’s stealing someone else’s fiancé and is still so arrogant.”
Zhan Xinyue looked at her with disdain and sneered, “Since you like Li Jian so much, you’re so eager to be a stepmother, then go ahead.”
She wouldn’t be a stepmother to anyone!
In her previous life, she had almost given her heart away, but she had still raised two ungrateful snakes.
If you weren’t from your own womb, you couldn’t raise them to be close or loyal.
