“Suyou, little sister, I won’t hide it from you. Your Sister Min told me you were planning to go into the cosmetics business. But from what I saw today, the delivery trucks coming here were all from big supermarkets, and they were bringing food and clothes, not cosmetics.”
“She also said you reminded her that the weather might get bad soon, maybe heavy rain, and advised her to stock up on supplies. Is that true?”
There was a seriousness in Sun Liancheng’s tone, not at all like he was joking.
Su You had to straighten her back and take another look at this seemingly ordinary man.
She had only casually reminded Sister Min to watch out for climate changes and stock up on goods; she hadn’t gone into detail.
In her previous life, Su You remembered Sister Min once mentioning that her husband, Sun Liancheng, had been working in warehouse management for over ten years. Stockpiling was a family habit, so they were always well-prepared. After the apocalypse began, they lived far more comfortably than most.
Later on, because they had so much stockpiled and were kindhearted, the couple often helped others by sharing supplies.
Could it be… that wasn’t just coincidence? Did he already know something beforehand?
Feigning confusion, Su You said, “Brother Sun, what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
Seeing her expression, Sun Liancheng gave a helpless smile and explained, “Don’t worry, I’m not here to threaten or expose you. I just wanted to confirm if it’s true.”
As he spoke, he glanced around carefully, making sure no one was nearby. Then, lowering his voice mysteriously, he said, “To tell you the truth, lately the authorities have tightened control over certain goods. I have a friend in a special department who warned me to stock up early. He said the world might change, and it’s better to have a foundation to fall back on.”
Hearing this, Su You’s expression grew serious.
He didn’t seem like he was making it up.
Could it be that, even before the disasters of her past life, some people had already caught wind of it?
Su You wasn’t foolish. She also remembered that Sun Liancheng had died rather mysteriously in her previous life—could it have been connected to this?
So she nodded and said, “You’re right. According to predictions, the apocalypse will begin in about a month. I have a friend who’s a survivalist and always keeps up with this kind of news. He’s very certain this time, so he told me to start stockpiling. These items are all things he specifically asked me to prepare.”
She deliberately mixed truth with lies.
Although she had benefited from Sister Min before, she didn’t really know Sun Liancheng well.
If he was lying and only trying to trick her, she wouldn’t lose too much. She could still escape, assume a new identity, and start hoarding in another city.
But after hearing her words, Sun Liancheng didn’t show any doubt.
He clapped his hands together and sighed in relief. “So that’s it. Seems what my friend said is real.”
Su You asked, “Brother Sun, since your friend works in a special department, did he say anything about what might cause this apocalypse?”
Sun Liancheng frowned. “He didn’t reveal much. Just said the probability is high, and once it happens, the whole planet will deteriorate in a way that can’t be reversed.”
Su You fell into thought.
Sun Liancheng sighed again. “If the end really comes, ordinary people like us won’t survive easily. All we can do is stockpile early and hold out as long as possible. After all, living, no matter how hard, is better than dying.”
Though he was a cautious man and good at preparing ahead, in the face of natural disasters beyond human control, he was still just an ordinary person—powerless.
At almost forty years old, a bitter smile tugged at his lips.
“Suyou, to be honest, the reason I came to you is because I want a way out. I can tell your friend must have strong financial backing—he’s not an ordinary person. If there’s ever a chance to enter a shelter or underground refuge, I hope, for Sister Min’s sake, you can bring us along.”
“Don’t worry. Whatever you’ve got in your warehouse, I’ll keep it secret. And if there’s ever anything you need me for, just say the word.”
His generosity, in contrast, made Su You feel that she herself was being overly cautious.
He really was a good ally to have here.
Su You said, “Alright then, Brother Sun. If I’m not around in the future, I’ll trouble you to keep an eye on the warehouse for me.”
“No problem, no problem,” Sun Liancheng replied quickly.
His words reminded Su You of something important.
Using a warehouse as a transfer point for supplies carried a big risk—she had been careless.
Warehouse managers and delivery workers were closely connected. They usually knew what was inside the cargo crates.
If she kept transporting huge amounts of goods without cover, someone was bound to notice sooner or later.
What she needed was exactly a helping hand to cover her tracks.
“Brother Sun, I’ll remember your words. If there’s news of shelters, I’ll let you know. But for now, I hope you can keep this from Sister Min, just to avoid unnecessary trouble.”
“Of course,” Sun Liancheng agreed at once. “Without evidence, no one would believe it. And saying it out loud would only cause trouble. Don’t worry, this stays between you and me.”
Su You finally nodded. Then she asked, “Have you already started stockpiling?”
“Just started yesterday,” Sun Liancheng replied. “I’ve got a villa in the Huanshan Valley resort area. The place is high up, with plenty of water and power, and a storage room. I plan to stockpile there. If danger comes, we can take shelter there too.”
Huanshan Valley Resort was located northwest of Deep City, the highest terrain in the area.
Sun Liancheng wasn’t hiding anything from her. In her past life, she remembered he had indeed moved supplies there.
That area was an affluent zone filled with villas and resorts. Later, when the torrential rains came, some city residents fled toward the northwest mountains.
Su You said, “Alright, Brother Sun. Stick to your plan and keep stockpiling. If I get any news, I’ll contact you immediately.”
Seeing her attitude shift, Sun Liancheng finally relaxed.
Since she still had things to do that afternoon, after a few more polite words she took her leave.
This trip had been fruitful—she had upgraded her base and gained a helper.
The black SUV rolled across the grey asphalt, pulling away from the blue warehouse district.
Sitting on the slope, Sun Liancheng pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit one.
At last, he let out a breath of relief.
Since that day, his friend had left him only one cryptic warning, then vanished without a trace.
He had been doubtful at first—until he saw Su You. His wife’s colleague, a young woman, somehow had enough money and resources to hoard supplies worth a fortune. That wasn’t something a girl her age could do alone.
He was convinced now: there had to be a powerful figure behind her, orchestrating everything.
He had to stay cautious, probing carefully.
Now that his suspicions were confirmed, he could relax a little—but at the same time, he felt a heavier gloom about the future.
If the end was coming, all he wanted was to protect his wife and child.
All these efforts were just in hopes that, when the time came, the powerful person backing Su You would spare him a hand.
