As they spoke, a large horde of zombies suddenly swarmed toward them.
There was no time to say more—Edmund immediately led his people into the company building.
Several zombies were wandering in the lobby, but they were quickly taken down by the group.
However, a new problem followed—they needed to locate the company’s R&D laboratory.
According to the floor plan, it was on the 28th floor. They couldn’t use the elevators and could only rely on the stairs.
Though this seemed clumsy, it was the only viable option at the moment.
Once they found both the target person and the documents, they could continue up to the rooftop and call headquarters for helicopter extraction.
That was Edmund’s battle plan.
The team all agreed, but Su You didn’t intend to act together with them.
As the old saying goes: you can guard against everything, but not against the human heart.
Since there were already people in the team who doubted her, that meant she would be entrusting her back to someone she couldn’t trust. In a zombie situation, betrayal could come at any time.
Su You had seen such things all too often in her past life.
If they wanted to search for Li Sen and the documents, let them. She only wanted to check whether Li Sen was alive, nothing more.
Besides, there were useful things she couldn’t openly take in front of them. It was better to act separately.
Hal was quite upset—after all, Su You had saved him—but since his teammates tacitly agreed to part ways, he couldn’t stop it. All he could do was apologize to her.
Su You generously left him with a communicator.
Of course, not without strings attached.
Now that she knew Hal, she had a connection within the military.
She had always suspected that the cause of this catastrophe was known to some higher-ups of certain countries.
If Hal ever obtained related information, he could pass it on to her.
After they left, Su You still followed them upstairs—she couldn’t waste the trip.
Using her spatial overlap ability, she discovered that the second and third floors of the company were joined into a massive warehouse, filled with towering shelves and a wide variety of items.
Most of the goods were experimental and office supplies, not food. Everything was neatly sorted and labeled by category.
And inside the warehouse were only three or four zombie warehouse clerks—no other living humans.
After confirming, Su You easily took them out with her silenced pistol.
She first entered a cold storage warehouse used for laboratory supplies.
Inside, she found equipment that could prove useful later.
Brand-new lab equipment, spare parts, instrument cleaning solutions, high-glucose media for cell culture, virus and bacteria culturing devices and reagents—everything neatly packed in transparent or white freezers. She collected them all into her space.
Any single small vial of reagent could be worth tens of thousands, let alone such a huge stockpile.
Su You instantly felt like she had struck gold. The trip had definitely been worthwhile.
Next, with the mindset of “might as well take advantage while I’m here,” she swept through an even larger warehouse.
Neatly arranged on the floor were: shelf carts, forklifts, pallet jacks, and pallets.
On the shelves were unopened computers, laptops, telephones, printers, copiers, fax machines, even network cables.
There were also pens of all kinds, batteries of every size, file folders, file racks, office desks and chairs, fire extinguishers, hygrometers, cleaning tools, and so on.
Basically, anything that could be useful—she took it all.
After finishing, Su You was about to leave the second floor to search elsewhere.
But just as she stepped onto the stairs, she heard noises coming from above.
She immediately raised her gun in alert.
The footsteps were messy yet quick—without gunfire. But behind them, many zombies gave chase.
From this, Su You judged it wasn’t Edmund’s Eagle Squad, but likely some Norton Company employees who had been trapped when the zombies suddenly struck yesterday.
Perhaps the Eagle Squad had lured away some zombies from their floor, giving them the chance to escape.
They quickly reached the second floor, but their pace was slowing, nearly caught by the pursuing horde. They were forced to stop.
Someone suggested, “There’s a warehouse here. The zombies shouldn’t be too many inside. Let’s hide in there.”
The other two quickly agreed. They didn’t know how many zombies were in the lobby below, and since they were exhausted, it was better to rest here and regain strength.
At this point, Su You had no reason to keep pretending.
The three rushed in and soon discovered the office and corridor zombies had all been killed. Only a black-helmeted figure stood at the warehouse door.
In the moment they froze, Su You decisively acted and shot down the two zombies chasing them.
The three snapped back to their senses.
A woman urged, “Let’s get inside quickly.”
They slammed the warehouse’s iron door shut and locked it from within.
Su You noted that the group consisted of two men and one woman.
All three wore lab coats and carried backpacks, looking extremely panicked.
One man’s face looked somewhat familiar—Su You quickly recognized him.
To break the awkwardness, the man stepped forward. “My name is Li Sen. I’m a researcher in this company’s R&D center. These are my colleagues.”
He wore glasses, his hair messy, lips cracked. It was clear they hadn’t had water in a long while.
Su You nodded and only said her surname was Su, claiming she was here looking for someone.
Unfortunately, it seemed they had just missed the Eagle Squad.
Unless she could contact them, she’d have to wait until they came down.
Li Sen took the initiative to ask, “Miss Su, did you see a group of soldiers? We had agreed to meet them for specimen rescue, but they didn’t show, so we came down to look.”
His expression dimmed. “There are too many zombies upstairs. We couldn’t stay long and had to come down.”
Su You nodded. “They went up about half an hour ago. Looks like you just missed them on the way.”
The woman beside him grew anxious. “I knew it—I told you I heard faint gunfire then, but you wouldn’t believe me. It really was the military!”
The other man was equally worried. “What should we do now? These specimens must be stored in -196°C liquid nitrogen tanks. Our temporary equipment won’t last much longer.”
Li Sen calmed them. “Don’t panic. Keep trying the satellite phone—we need to make contact with the soldiers.”
The two fiddled with the satphone, but still no signal.
Finally, Li Sen looked toward Su You. “Miss, do you have any other communication device we could borrow?”
Su You glanced at him, smiled slightly, and said, “Of course. But first, you need to tell me—what exactly happened here?”
