Chapter 48: A Chance for a Bold Question
The crisp sound of an alarm clock rang through the courtyard.
Jian Yao,still in bed, didn’t even open her eyes. She reached out a hand from under the covers and turned off the alarm.
She was wearing a man’s pajamas, and as she lifted her hand, the sleeve slipped down, revealing a section of her white arm. Her delicate brows furrowed slightly.
If she were at home, she would definitely have stayed in bed for a while longer.
But she was at Gu Zhiyan’s house, and it would be a bit rude to wake up too late.
Jian Yao opened her eyes, looked at the ceiling to wake herself up, and took out her phone to open WeChat.
This was a habit she had developed after starting work at Lu’s.
In the business department, the biggest mistake you could make was missing a message from a partner.
Jian Yao quickly scanned the messages. There were no messages from partners, but the messages from the blocked business department group were flashing rapidly.
Jian Yao curiously clicked on it.
99 group messages
“I went to get water just now and heard the people in the next department say that Sister Jian Yao,the daughter of the Lu family, was forced out of Lu’s by a country girl named Liu Yiyi. It’s so stupid, I’m so angry!”
“Don’t pay attention to those fools with the wrong values. They’re just jealous that our department used to eat meat with Sister Jian Yao. They don’t even think about it, if it wasn’t for the projects Sister Jian Yao brought in, they wouldn’t even get a sip of soup. Ungrateful things.”
“This makes me so upset. Without Sister Jian Yao backing us up, I don’t feel safe at all. Why wasn’t it Liu Yiyi who left!”
“The receptionist said that Presisdent Lu came to work with a fever patch today. I don’t know if it’s because of Sister Jian Yao… I hope President Lu and Sister Jian Yao end their cold war soon.”
“I don’t know if I should say this… do any of you watch game streams? I think the voice of Gu Shen’s mysterious wife last night sounded like Sister Jian Yao…”
“Tsk, impossible.”
“Other people may not know, but we in the business department know how much Sister Jian likes President Lu!”
Below, it was all impossible.
Even though she had just left Lu’s, Jian Yao felt out of place when she looked at the company group again.
Especially when she saw them discussing her and Lu Chengze, she felt a sense of shame, like her dark history was being dug up.
Jian Yao’s inner monologue: Did you guys forget I’m in the group too! Hey!
Jian Yao,who had been a little sleepy, got out of bed quickly, silently left the group, and went to wash up.
As for whether Lu Chengze was at work with a fever, that was already forgotten.
In the bathroom, Jian Yao stood in front of the mirror, brushing her teeth, and quickly opened her phone to open Weibo.
The Weibo post titled “【Photos of Gu Shao and Mingzhu as Children Were Dug Up, The Whole Network Is Shipping Them】” immediately caught her attention.
The brushing action in her hand paused for a moment, she clicked on the Weibo post and quickly scanned it, then put down her phone.
Mingzhu.
She had heard of her.
The daughter of Ming’s Pharmaceutical.
It was said that she was talented and beautiful, and her family background was also a good match for the Gu family.
Jian Yao spat out the foam in her mouth, rinsed her mouth, and looked at her reflection in the mirror, pulling out a face towel.
In terms of matching families, Mingzhu was indeed a perfect choice.
She let out a sigh, dispelling the unknown frustration in her heart, and put on the clothes she had washed last night from the dryer and went out.
She had gone to bed late yesterday, and she thought she had woken up early enough. She planned to come over early to prepare breakfast as a way of repaying Gu Zhiyan for his hospitality.
But he was already busy in the kitchen.
The man was wearing a white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing a strong arm.
He was wearing a black apron, the thin straps tied loosely around his waist, outlining his perfectly shaped waist.
The last time Jian Yao saw such a perfect body proportion was in a comic book.
It seemed as if he heard footsteps, the man who was concentrating on frying eggs turned his head and reminded softly, “Breakfast will be ready soon, wait at the dining table for a while.”
Jian Yao didn’t stop, “I’ll help you prepare.”
She really couldn’t bear to let Gu Zhiyan be busy in the kitchen alone.
Just then, the toaster “dinged.”
Gu Zhiyan took the fried eggs out of the pan, “Then help me put the toasted bread on the plate.”
Moments later, the prepared breakfast was all on the table.
Gu Zhiyan took off his apron and put it away, sitting down at the dining table.
“My skills are limited, don’t be picky.”
Jian Yao chuckled, “How could I? I’m just a little surprised that you got up so early.”
Gu Zhiyan picked up a slice of toast, spread butter on it and put it in Jian Yao’s plate, his tone nonchalant, “I’m used to getting up early, try it.”
Jian Yao cooperated and took a bite of the toast, the taste of oil mixed with the aroma of wheat burst in her mouth, “It’s delicious.”
Gu Zhiyan’s eyes fell on her face, seeing that she genuinely liked it, he then buttered his own slice, his lips slightly raised, “If you like it, eat more.”
The phone in his hand popped up with a few messages, seeing Gu Zhiyan pick up his phone to check, Jian Yao averted her gaze out of consideration.
During the meal, Jian Yao wanted to ask Gu Zhiyan several times why he didn’t choose Mingzhu when he needed someone to pretend to be married.
Every time she was about to speak, she swallowed it back down silently.
One burst of energy, then decline, then exhaustion.
Finally, Jian Yao decided to shut up.
She didn’t know what kind of identity she should ask Gu Zhiyan with.
No matter how she organized her words, coupled with that hot search, it was like questioning him.
Besides, it was Gu Zhiyan’s private matter.
It was very impolite.
Gu Zhiyan sat opposite her, seeing her small actions clearly.
Seeing her gather her courage several times, then angrily bite her food and puff up her cheeks, a hint of amusement flashed in his eyes.
He coughed lightly, picked up his milk and took a sip, his tone full of doting amusement, “I’ll give you a chance to ask a bold question, ask whatever you want to ask directly.”
Jian Yao’s chewing action stopped, she stared at Gu Zhiyan with wide eyes.
She had been very careful not to reveal any unusual behavior.
Did this guy have mind-reading skills?
Gu Zhiyan didn’t explain, he just reminded softly, “You have three minutes, no questions asked will be considered automatic forfeiture.”
When he said this, he deliberately prolonged his ending tone, low and magnetic, like a male fox spirit who lured people into depravity, incredibly sexy.
Jian Yao swallowed the food in her mouth, trying to find the right words, “You and Mingzhu grew up together, when you needed someone to pretend to be married, why didn’t you choose Mingzhu?”
Although she was the one who got drunk and stopped Gu Zhiyan that night, he had every reason to refuse.
She was forced to do so, but Gu Zhiyan had many choices, he didn’t have to choose her.
Looking back now, what happened that night still felt like a dream.
She even easily signed a prenuptial agreement that was of no benefit to him.
Wasn’t he afraid that she was a scheming woman who was after his money?
Gu Zhiyan pondered for a moment, replying seriously, “Mingzhu and I are not familiar, we were just kindergarten classmates, as for why I chose you…”
He spoke, then suddenly raised his eyes to look at Jian Yao, his usually clear and cold eyes were filled with an inseparable mist, “If I said it wasn’t a coincidence that night, would you believe me?”
