Chapter 9
Zhao Fanghu felt strange: “Doctor Jiang, you can make whitening cream yourself, why don’t you use it?”
After applying the whitening cream, there was a faint rose scent, but Zhao Fanghu had never smelled anything similar when she was close to Jiang Nianzi.
“Because I don’t have money.”
Jiang Nianzi said frankly, with a faint smile on her face, not feeling uncomfortable at all because of this embarrassing question.
Zhao Fanghu looked at her in astonishment, meeting her bright and gentle smile, she was stunned for a moment.
She thought, if Jiang Nianzi was fair, she would be a stunning beauty.
After all, even though her skin was much darker than hers, she was still so beautiful.
Big, bright eyes, with eyes as clear as water and as bright as autumn, that’s probably what she looked like.
It was just that her skin color limited her, people wouldn’t notice her beautiful eyes at first glance.
It was like a pearl covered in dust.
Zhao Fanghu felt that she had received her kindness, she took out five yuan from her pocket and handed it to Jiang Nianzi: “Doctor Jiang, this is the payment for your acupuncture these past few days.”
Jiang Nianzi looked at the five yuan she handed over, she was very tempted.
But she didn’t take it: “I’ve already taken your money once, I can’t take it again.”
Zhao Fanghu had a temper, if someone took advantage of her, she would be even more ruthless, but if someone was polite to her, she wanted to help them.
“Oh, just take it, when did you take your money? You only took the money for the whitening cream and the medicine last time, you haven’t taken the acupuncture fee yet.”
She forcefully stuffed it into Jiang Nianzi’s hand.
Jiang Nianzi pushed back: “Acupuncture assistance is considered after-sales service for you getting the whitening cream from me, I can’t charge for that.”
She had her own principles.
Zhao Fanghu was very fond of her because of her words: “Just take it, don’t be polite with me.”
It wasn’t that Zhao Fanghu was being generous, she had her own thoughts.
During the days she came for acupuncture, she saw that the patients in the shop were polite and respectful to Jiang Nianzi, and the effect of the whitening cream made her even more convinced that Jiang Nianzi was a skilled doctor.
It wouldn’t hurt to have a good relationship with someone like her.
She had helped her when she was poor, maybe she could repay her even more in the future.
She was too enthusiastic, Jiang Nianzi couldn’t refuse, but she wouldn’t take the money for nothing.
“Let’s do this, keep using the whitening cream, your skin will get better and better. I’ll take this five yuan first, and I’ll give you a few more bottles of whitening cream later.”
That was a good idea.
Zhao Fanghu happily nodded: “Okay, that’s settled.”
Jiang Nianzi took her to the medicine cabinet and started making the whitening cream.
Zhang Grandpa was seeing other patients, when he saw Jiang Nianzi taking Zhao Fanghu to make the whitening cream, the smile in his eyes couldn’t be concealed.
This girl was articulate, she was neither self-effacing nor arrogant, and she didn’t fawn over the customers. If she was well-trained, she would be a great talent.
She had only been at the clinic for ten days or so, and every patient who had seen her had nothing but good things to say about her.
Zhang Grandpa had been running the clinic for so long, he had never seen a patient praise her so gratefully.
He had originally been worried that she would lose herself in the constant praise.
He had overthought it, this girl was unfazed by fame and fortune, no matter how flattering the patients were, she would just smile politely, never arrogant.
Jiang Nianzi made three bottles of whitening cream for Zhao Fanghu.
The cost of the whitening cream herbs was two yuan and fifty cents, and she made half the profit.
After deducting the cost of the herbs, she gave half to Zhang Grandpa.
Zhang Grandpa refused to take it at first, but Jiang Nianzi insisted, so he finally took one yuan from her, leaving one yuan and fifty cents in her pocket.
After work, Jiang Nianzi took out the loose change in her pants and counted it.
She had accumulated almost twenty yuan during this time.
Without hesitation, she immediately took the money to the cooperative to buy things.
When she saw patients, some of them gave her some grain tickets as a thank you, Jiang Nianzi, in order not to take the patients’ money for nothing, she charged less than her due consultation fee.
Rice was fifteen cents a pound, Jiang Nianzi bought twenty pounds of rice first, then bought a bucket of soybean oil, five pounds of eggs, and finally, after thinking about it, she bought a can of malted milk.
The eggs in this era, whether from farmers or from the cooperative, were all real free-range eggs.
She bought a bunch of things, costing her a total of ten yuan.
Thinking about the yard in front of her house, Jiang Nianzi went back and bought some vegetable seeds.
After buying them, Jiang Nianzi realized that she had bought a bit too much.
This was a problem.
Perhaps heaven was taking pity on her, just as Jiang Nianzi was worrying about how to get the things home, she met the uncle from the village at the entrance of the cooperative.
Uncle Wang was pulling his ox cart, he was also coming to buy things.
What a coincidence!
Jiang Nianzi smiled: “Uncle Wang, why are you in town?”
Uncle Wang didn’t see Jiang Nianzi, he turned his head when he heard her call: “Zizi, what are you doing here?”
As soon as he spoke, he remembered what he had heard from the villagers a few days ago.
They all said that Jiang Nianzi was successful, she was now seeing patients at a clinic in town, and she could earn thirty yuan a month.
Uncle Wang immediately smiled: “Uncle came to buy some flour, isn’t your Yanzi sister getting married soon?”
In this era of widespread poverty, flour was even rarer.
But her daughter was getting married, she had to get some good things to entertain the guests.
Plus, the son-in-law’s conditions were pretty good, and he gave a lot of dowry money, so Uncle Wang decided to splurge a little.
Jiang Nianzi felt apologetic: “So Yanzi sister is getting married, then Uncle, I’ll wait for you, I’ll go back to the village with you later.”
“Okay.” Uncle Wang was a straightforward man, he didn’t hesitate and agreed.
They couldn’t haggle prices at the cooperative, Uncle Wang quickly bought a bag of flour.
When Uncle Wang came out, he saw the pile of things at Jiang Nianzi’s feet.
Goodness, those were all good things.
Rice, soybean oil, malted milk, eggs…
Which one of these wouldn’t make people drool?
Uncle Wang’s eyes were filled with warmth as he looked at Jiang Nianzi.
Ding Hongmei’s daughter was really successful.
His children weren’t good at studying, and Uncle Wang could only envy her.
With Uncle Wang’s help, they moved the things onto the ox cart together.
They arrived in the village by dusk.
Uncle Wang directly took Jiang Nianzi to her doorstep.
Jiang Nianzi took out two eggs and gave them to Uncle Wang as a thank you.
“Hey, girl, how could Uncle take your things?” Uncle Wang was dying of envy, but he was very polite.
Jiang Nianzi, learning from Zhao Fanghu’s style, stuffed the eggs into Uncle Wang’s hand and said with a smile: “Uncle, don’t be polite with me, if it weren’t for your help today, I wouldn’t have been able to come back. Just take them.”
After she said that, Uncle Wang didn’t refuse anymore.
Holding the two free-range eggs, Uncle Wang’s heart was warm.
These were precious things.
After Uncle Wang left, Jiang Nianzi shouted towards her house: “Brother, Doudou, I’m back, come out and help me carry the things.”
