Chapter 50
“Oh, right, I’m here to deliver a message.”
Liu Cuifang glared at He Ting angrily, “You’re so ungrateful to Po Shi. She’s still so devoted to you, and you—people like you don’t deserve to receive any letters from Po Shi.”
He Ting couldn’t be bothered by her anymore and felt it was pointless to argue with someone like her.
Although He Yunqi and He Yunran were young, they understood Liu Cuifang was insulting their little aunt.
Moreover, back in the capital’s compound, He Yunqi had always found Liu Cuifang annoying.
The little guy put his hands on his hips and spat toward Liu Cuifang, nearly spitting on her.
He Ting: “…”
He had to correct this bad habit of the little one.
His uncle frowned, clearly displeased, but He Yunqi stood confidently with his hands on his hips.
“I—spit at the dog!”
He Yunran, who had been grumbling in discontent, not liking anyone insulting her little aunt, now heard her brother’s words and giggled happily in He Ting’s arms.
“Ah, spit!”
“Spit at the dog! Spit at the dog!”
Liu Cuifang was infuriated: “You two uncivilized little brats!”
Lu Baiwei had originally not wanted to bother with Liu Cuifang. Back when they had bumped into her at the state-run restaurant when she and He Ting got their marriage certificate, Lu Baiwei had thought Liu Cuifang didn’t seem very bright.
A dog bites her, but she can’t bite back, right?
But when the dog barks at her, that’s one thing, but barking at the children is another.
“Liu Zhiqing, you said my Yunran and Xiao Qi are uncivilized, but do you even know how to write the word ‘cultured’?”
“I’m married to He Ting, and we are legally recognized as a married couple by the country and the law.”
“You come to my doorstep, going crazy, saying some other woman is thinking about my husband, insulting my children for being uncivilized—are you out of your mind, or do you really have a problem?”
“My husband is already married. If you really care about your friend, Po Shi, shouldn’t you stop using her name to cling to my husband? Don’t you realize you’re ruining her reputation?”
“Are you really standing up for your friend?”
“Or do you just want to destroy her reputation?”
“You city girls come to our countryside, and we think you’re cultured, educated, here to contribute to the country and help build the new rural areas.”
“But with your manners, with your behavior, you’re really embarrassing all the city girls. You’ve lowered the standard of city girls.”
Lu Baiwei questioned her, “You’re sure you want to keep causing trouble in front of my house?”
“I don’t mind going to Hongqi Village to talk to your village’s party secretary and the village chief to figure out how to handle someone like you.”
Lu Baiwei spoke calmly but with precision, each word cutting through Liu Cuifang’s arguments, leaving her speechless.
Liu Cuifang, shaking, pointed at Lu Baiwei but couldn’t say a word in reply.
—
She pointed at Lu Baiwei, her hand trembling, unable to say a word.
“Who are you calling uncivilized?”
“Hmph, as for us city girls, we are obviously the most knowledgeable, cultured, and civilized. I won’t stoop to your level.”
Liu Cuifang took out the letter from her pocket and handed it to He Ting. “This is from Po Shi, she asked me to pass it to you. Take it.”
“I won’t take it!”
He Ting reminded Liu Cuifang, “I’ll say it one last time. Po Shi and I are only neighbors who grew up in the same compound. We have no other relationship.”
“Whether it’s Po Shi who asked you to deliver the letter or whether it was your idea, I’m married to my wife, Lu Baiwei. I, He Ting, must remain faithful to my marriage and have no involvement with anyone other than my wife.”
“And I’m very satisfied with my wife. I like her a lot.”
“Our marriage is not something anyone can meddle with.”
He Ting coldly warned Liu Cuifang, “If you ever dare to point your finger at my wife again, come running to our doorstep, causing a scene under the pretense of delivering a message, I’ll report you to the Hongqi Village and the commune, accusing you of being a troublemaker and interfering with a married couple’s relationship.”
“He Ting, you, you…”
This was infuriating!
She and Po Shi had known He Ting the longest.
He Ting was saying he was very satisfied with marrying a village girl, and he liked his wife.
He even threatened to accuse her of being a troublemaker.
If she was charged with being a troublemaker, she could be sent to the labor farm, and depending on the severity, she might even be executed.
He Ting really had no sentiment left for her, his mind completely clouded by that country fox spirit.
Liu Cuifang was left speechless, and He Ting and Lu Baiwei stood on the moral high ground, making it impossible for her to argue back. Frustrated, she started crying.
“He Ting, how could you treat me like this?”
“You’re so heartless! I even came to the countryside with you!”
“I hate you, I’ll hate you forever…”
She threw the letter on the ground, crying as she ran off.
The girl who had come with her looked familiar.
Lu Baiwei thought for a moment and finally remembered that this girl was the younger sister of Tang Yunling’s fiancé, who lived in the neighboring village.
“Sis Wei, I was just helping her find the way. If I had known she would act like this, I wouldn’t have helped her.”
The young girl apologized to Lu Baiwei, nodded, and ran after the crying Liu Cuifang.
Lu Baiwei shrugged helplessly and turned to He Ting. “Comrade He, you really are something, always flirting around, with a pile of romantic debts.”
Before He Ting could respond, He Yunqi puffed out his chest and stood next to Lu Baiwei.
“Little aunt, I don’t pick flowers randomly, I only like you and Yunran.”
“You’re still going to make me delicious food tomorrow, right?”
—
“You’re still going to make me delicious food tomorrow, right?”
How come He Yunqi is everywhere?
He Ting was so annoyed, he grabbed the little rascal with one hand and pulled him to the side.
It didn’t matter whether he was right or wrong, the most important thing was to appease his wife.
He Ting quickly and sincerely apologized to Lu Baiwei.
“Weiwei, I was wrong.”

He Ting leaned in and whispered in her ear, “How about you punish me tonight?”
Wasn’t his little niece still on He Ting’s shoulder?
She heard it.
What was her uncle saying?!
What kind of punishment would little aunt give her uncle?
Rànran blinked her curious big eyes, looking at Lu Baiwei, then at He Ting.
How would this look to the children?
Lu Baiwei was exasperated.
She pushed He Ting away with disdain. “Go away…”
He Ting found that having two little ones around the house was both a sweet burden.
At the village health station, there were only two rooms in total.
Now that his wife was the barefoot doctor for the village, the outer room had been converted into a consultation room.
With two little ones here, they could only squeeze an extra bed into the inner room.
Since He Yunqi and He Yunran arrived suddenly and there wasn’t time to set up a bed, He Ting had to move the outside bed into the inner room.
This arrangement worked well for He Ting and Lu Baiwei to sleep in the same room, but it also meant two little ones were now staying with them.
The two children, having left Beijing and their parents, had no real sense of security in the new place.
According to Lu Baiwei’s plan, she would sleep with He Yunran, and He Ting would sleep with He Yunqi.
However, what He Yunqi and He Yunran didn’t know was that their uncle, having tasted a bit of sweetness, sneaked into their aunt’s bed in the middle of the night.
When He Yunqi fell asleep, He Ting heard He Yunran’s soft, sweet breathing from the other side. He quietly got up, carefully lifted her into his bed, and squeezed in with her and He Yunqi to sleep.
Then, he stealthily climbed into Lu Baiwei’s bed.
