Lin Can struggled to lift his head, his eyes focusing for a long time before he could barely see the person across from him.
It was a handsome man, but his sharp features were filled with shrewdness. He took a cautious step back, saying, “What?”
“Hey, don’t misunderstand,” seeing Lin Can’s wary expression, the man quickly explained, “I’m the owner of this swimming pool behind you. We’re short on swimming instructors. Would you like to give it a try?”
Lin Can finally realized that he wasn’t leaning against a wall but rather the door of someone else’s establishment. However, due to the high-end decor, he hadn’t immediately recognized it as a swimming pool.
“Swimming instructor?”
“That’s right,” the man said, “I’ll offer you a high salary.”
Lin Can was a bit speechless. “Aren’t you going to ask if I can swim?”
“If you can’t, you can learn! Once you know how, you can start working,” the man said, as if it were no big deal.
What kind of absurdity was this? Lin Can shook his head vigorously, trying to clear his mind. “No thanks, I don’t want to harm anyone…”
As he said this, he turned to leave.
The man blocked his way, speaking earnestly, “I really will pay you. Just think about it.”
“Are you running a pyramid scheme or something?” Lin Can, feeling weak from low blood sugar, couldn’t muster the strength to push past him and could only threaten, “Step aside, or I’ll call the police.”
“Oh my good brother,” the man didn’t take his threat seriously and instead laughed at the idea of a pyramid scheme, “In this prime location, I have such a big swimming pool. What would I need a pyramid scheme for?”
“Are you having a low blood sugar episode? Come on, let’s go inside and grab a bite to eat. I’ll also show you your future workplace.”
Lin Can was pushed inside.
As soon as they entered, a receptionist in a sea-blue uniform greeted them, “Qian Ge.”
The man called Qian Ge nodded, gripping Lin Can’s arm tightly, afraid he would run away. “Get someone to bring me a meal, add two pieces of chocolate, and just put it in my office.”
“Okay, okay,” the receptionist noted it down and then looked at Lin Can, “Is this guest…?”
“He’s here to apply for the swimming instructor position,” Qian Ge said, his tone noticeably lighter when mentioning Lin Can, “Not just a guest.”
The receptionist’s eyes lit up, and she looked at Lin Can with a straightforward and enthusiastic gaze, “So you’re the new colleague! Welcome, welcome!”
What new colleague? Did he say he was coming?
Lin Can rubbed his temples, feeling like his headache was getting worse.
*
After finishing the meal, Lin Can finally regained some strength.
“Shall we talk about your job?” the man named Qian Ge was eager.
Lin Can frowned, “What exactly do you want?”
“Not much,” Qian Ge rubbed his hands together, looking a bit shy, “It’s just that our store needs a face…”
Lin Can understood; this guy was after his looks.
“Don’t worry, as long as you’re willing to come, I’ll pay you a high salary! Thirty thousand… no, no, fifty thousand!”
“How about fifty thousand? If you’re not satisfied, eighty thousand is fine too!”
For Lin Can, whose total bank balance was less than a hundred, this was undoubtedly a huge temptation.
He was suspicious, “What do I need to do? I won’t do anything illegal.”
“Of course, it can’t be illegal!” Qian Ge looked like he wanted to tattoo ‘law-abiding citizen’ on his forehead. “You just need to wear swim trunks and walk around the pool…”
“What are you talking about?” Lin Can’s mouth twitched, “Are you serious?”
This was the job that would pay him eighty thousand?
“It’s only eighty thousand, not much. Don’t worry, if you can convince others to get membership cards here, I’ll give you a commission!”
Lin Can kept his guard up, “How much is a membership card?”
“About several hundred thousand, not much,” Qian Ge replied.
Lin Can understood; no wonder this swimming pool could open on a commercial street. They were making money in hundreds of thousands.
“I’ve had this store for two years, and business has been pretty good. Look,” Qian Ge pulled out his phone and typed “Blue Shore,” and sure enough, a lot of related content popped up. Several apps even had selfies of socialites checking in.
“Come on, with your looks, making money for luxury cars and houses here is a piece of cake,” Qian Ge added.
Lin Can pondered; he indeed needed to save up quickly to leave this city where two main characters lived.
“I need a job that provides food and accommodation. I don’t have a place to stay right now,” he said.
Qian Ge gasped, realizing this guy really was broke and fainted from hunger.
“We have work meals, and for accommodation, I can book a room at a nearby hotel. The cost will be deducted from your salary. How does that sound?”
Lin Can thought for a moment and finally nodded under Qian Ge’s anxious gaze.
The contract was already prepared; they just needed to fill in the salary, four zeros after the eight, and both parties signed and stamped it to make it effective.
Qian Ge was very eager, putting down the pen and sending someone to bring a pair of swim trunks for Lin Can to change into.
“Come on, let’s go try out the job for half a day.”
*
The half-day trial wasn’t exhausting, but the stares coming from all directions made Lin Can uncomfortable. As he noticed more and more female customers in the store, he suggested going home to pack his things.
“You have a home, and you still want me to find you a place to stay?” Qian Ge, holding the newly issued room key card, looked puzzled.
Lin Can sighed, “I just divorced my ex-husband this morning. That house belongs to him. I’m just going back to grab something; I won’t be living there.”
Qian Ge was shocked, “You were married? And now you’re divorced?!”
“You’re a twice-married man now!”
“What twice-married?” Lin Can was speechless, “I have no plans to remarry.”
“I think you might not have a choice…” Qian Ge said sincerely, glancing at a group of wealthy women nearby who were eyeing Lin Can.
Because of his words, Lin Can thought of Qi Yuan, whom he had just met not long ago.
He wondered if that ancestor had forgotten him; if he had, he would be thanking the heavens.
But Qian Ge was also a wealthy man; he might know Qi Yuan…
“Qian Ge, do you know…”
Before Lin Can could finish his sentence, two tall, fashionable beauties walked in through the door. Qian Ge perked up immediately and rushed over.
“Miss Zhao, Miss Xu! Oh my goodness, what brings you two here today? Is your outdoor pool at home under maintenance or something?”
Seeing the two beauties looking around as if searching for someone, Lin Can decided to change clothes and clock out.
Once he entered the changing room, several colleagues who had already finished work were still sitting on the benches, smoking and chatting. When they saw Lin Can come in, they all fell silent.
But the silence didn’t last long; a few seconds later, someone stood up and called out to the others, “Come on, let’s go have a meal tonight.”
Except for Lin Can, everyone enthusiastically followed out.
Lin Can, still in his swim trunks, took his time changing clothes. By the time he came out, the changing room was already empty.
Lin Can realized too late that he was…
Being isolated?
*
On the other side, Qi Yuan, who had been trying to avoid Lin Can, was getting more and more irritated by the day.
“Did they really get divorced?” Qi Yuan fidgeted with the documents in front of him, his movements growing more exaggerated.
Xie Jun, watching the wrinkled papers he had ruined, said quietly, “I asked Ran Yang, and they really did get divorced. I even took a photo of the divorce certificate.”
The photo he mentioned had long been sent to Qi Yuan’s phone, and he had looked at it several times throughout the day, becoming more and more restless and dry-mouthed with each glance.
How could someone make a divorce certificate look so good?
Clearly a scumbag, yet his eyes were so pure, like an innocent college student, making one want to ravage him just by looking!
“…”
Xie Jun was frustrated; did he really have to do this job? He had to listen to his boss’s wolfish words every day.
Gong Yusheng walked in and saw Xie Jun’s expression of despair, unable to help but laugh, “Qi Yuan, are you torturing Secretary Xie again?”
Xie Jun had once been pursued madly by a foreign man in college and almost got drugged and assaulted. Since then, he had kept his distance from the gay community.
He had thought Qi Yuan was a heartless man who wouldn’t have any of these inexplicable entanglements, which was why he chose to be his secretary. He never expected that this man would be as intense as the one who had pursued him back then, waiting for someone to get divorced.
Damn it, he wanted to call the police.
Qi Yuan glanced at Xie Jun, who looked like a dead fish, and finally showed some mercy by letting him leave.
Once Xie Jun closed the office door, Gong Yusheng said, “Still bothered by Lin Can?”
Qi Yuan didn’t want to engage; if it weren’t for this guy blocking him at the restaurant, he would never have let Lin Can go.
Gong Yusheng found it amusing; he had known Qi Yuan for so long and had never seen him so obsessed.
“What’s the big deal about a man? Why are you so precious about him?” He sat on the sofa, crossing his legs. “If you really like him, I can find you someone.”
Qi Yuan’s thin lips curled in a sneer, “Find? What would you use to find? Can you find someone just like Lin Can?”
Gong Yusheng chuckled awkwardly; Lin Can’s face was indeed hard to come by, and he often reminisced about it.
“There’s no one exactly like him, but there are others who are not worse. I heard that a new employee at Wang Qian’s place is super popular and has already made him a lot of money in just a few days.”
“Wang Qian?”
“That guy who runs the swimming pool. They say it’s a swimming pool, but in reality, it’s just like a duck shop, making money off rich women.”
“Oh, him.” Qi Yuan only remembered when reminded but still couldn’t muster any interest.
Gong Yusheng urged, “Why not go take a look? You might find someone you like.”
“Do I have such low standards? Can I just like any random cat or dog?” Qi Yuan scoffed.
“Just go once; you have nothing else to do anyway.” Gong Yusheng persisted.
Half an hour later, the two arrived at the entrance of Blue Shore.
“He’s quite shrewd to open a swimming pool here; the people coming and going are all wealthy,” Qi Yuan didn’t take off his sunglasses, but his outstanding figure and temperament still attracted many glances from passersby.
“Exactly, he shouldn’t be called Wang Qian; he should be called Wang Money,” Gong Yusheng also sighed.
Wang Qian came from a scholarly family, with several top scholars in his ancestry, yet he didn’t love studying and preferred making money, practically wanting to dive into a money pit. Among their circle, besides Qi Yuan, he was the wealthiest at this age.
Qi Yuan pushed his sunglasses up, “Let’s go.”
As they entered the store, Wang Qian happened to be there. Upon seeing them, he was both surprised and delighted, “My goodness, what wind blew you two here!”
Gong Yusheng laughed, “I heard you got an incredible employee, so I came to join the fun.”
Mentioning this, Wang Qian’s eyes sparkled with joy, “I’m not kidding; I really hit the jackpot this time. In just a few days, my money is coming in so fast I can’t even count it.”
Qi Yuan showed no reaction, but Gong Yusheng was intrigued, “Is he really that handsome?”
“Absolutely!” Wang Qian was not modest at all.
“Shall we take a look?”
“Let’s go! I know where he is!”
Wang Qian and Gong Yusheng sang in harmony as they headed toward the swimming area, while Qi Yuan followed behind, feeling aimless. Before they got close, excited screams came from inside.
“Teacher Lin, why are you covering up so much? Take it off and let us see!”
“Exactly! I can pay to watch! Ten thousand for one! No! A hundred thousand!”
