Chapter 1: Reborn on the Wedding Day – I’m Not Marrying Him Anymore
Li Zhi was dying—only thirty-five years old, but already looked like a frail woman in her fifties or sixties.
She had worked herself to death for that family.
The ones who had benefited from her sacrifices stood proudly at her bedside, mocking her, even urging her to rest in peace.
But how could she rest in peace when she had died with such regrets?
For the Lu family, she had given up college, given up her dreams, taken care of a father-in-law who had suffered a stroke, a paralyzed mother-in-law, a spoiled sister-in-law, and a sickly premature son.
Sixteen years of hard work and self-sacrifice were repaid with cold-hearted betrayal from her husband and son.
The man who had once saved her life, her so-called hero, had ultimately shoved her into hell.
With clenched teeth and a mouth full of blood, Li Zhi cursed with difficulty: “You two… beasts… you won’t die a good death!”
Standing next to Lu Yanzhi, Lin Xuewei frowned gently and said, “Li Zhi, how can you curse Yanzhi and An’an? They’re your husband and son.”
Each word stabbed at Li Zhi’s heart like a knife.
Li Zhi glared at her with hatred. “Lin Xuewei! You filthy mistress! What right do you have to scold me?”
Startled by the venom in her gaze, Lin Xuewei shrank into Lu Yanzhi’s arms and whimpered, “Yanzhi~”
The man embraced her gently and comforted her, telling her not to be afraid. He then shot Li Zhi a cold, warning glare.
Her son, angry at being called a beast, shouted, “You’re useless! Dumb and stupid! You don’t deserve to be my mom. Aunt Xuewei is my real mother—you’re not!”
Lu Yanzhi also said, “Li Zhi, I’ve always remembered what you’ve done for the Lu family. But I never loved you. The only person I love is Xuewei. I’ll take care of An’an. You can go in peace.”
“Dad, let’s stop wasting time. Let her die already.” The son reached to pull out her oxygen tube.
Suddenly, the sharp stench of leaking gas filled the room.
“What’s that smell?”
Lu Yanzhi sensed danger. “Gas leak! It might explode—run!”
With effort, Li Zhi pressed the ignition switch and enunciated slowly, “Let’s… all… go to hell together.”
Lu Yanzhi’s face twisted in rage. “You venomous woman! You’ve tormented me all my life—why won’t you let me go even in death?!”
He screamed as he shielded Lin Xuewei and her daughter, fleeing toward the door.
Before leaving, her son yanked out her oxygen tube. “You wretched woman! Trying to take us down with you? Go to hell!”
A loud explosion erupted, flames soaring.
Li Zhi sank into darkness and could hear nothing more.
…
Li Zhi awoke to the pungent smell of disinfectant and saw a man in military uniform sitting beside her hospital bed. For a moment, she thought she saw a younger version of Lu Yanzhi.
Did they all die too?
Wonderful!!!
Suddenly, the man spoke. “You’re awake? Are you feeling okay anywhere?”
Something was off about his voice. Li Zhi focused her gaze.
The man had a chiseled, handsome face. His long phoenix eyes were downcast, thick lashes casting shadows under them. A high-bridged nose, tight lips, and a tall figure clad in a sharp uniform—he radiated a noble yet distant aura.
This wasn’t Lu Yanzhi, but Lu Yanzhi’s commanding officer.
In her past life, they’d met a few times but weren’t familiar.
Seeing her silent, the man added, “Sorry, I accidentally hit you. I’ll take full responsibility. I’ll go get the doctor.”
Li Zhi looked around. This was a hospital?
It felt like… she was reborn—reborn on her wedding day.
Lu Yanzhi’s beloved white moonlight, Lin Xuewei’s daughter, Ying Huan, had caught a fever and collapsed at the wedding.
Lu Yanzhi rushed her to the hospital, leaving Li Zhi to face the whispers and mockery of the guests alone.
Chasing after him, she had been hit by Fu Tingzhou, who was arriving for the wedding.
In her past life, she had stormed into the ward downstairs and caused a huge scene, making Ying Huan’s condition worse and nearly killing her.
She, the victim, became the villain, labeled a murderer.
She only learned later—it was all part of Lin Xuewei’s scheme.
Her pure white wedding dress became the butt of a cruel joke.
This time, she wouldn’t make the same foolish mistake. She would call off the wedding and let them be together, let Lin Xuewei marry into the Lu family and live that “wonderful life.”
Fu Tingzhou brought the doctor over to examine her.
She said she felt dizzy. The doctor suspected a mild concussion and advised her to stay for observation.
Her and Lu Yanzhi’s wedding registration had already been approved by the military, though they hadn’t received their certificate yet. The wedding had begun. To the outside world, they were already considered a couple.
She had to find a way to call it off! With the nurse’s help, she changed out of her wedding dress.
“Nurse, please throw this away.”
“Huh? Throw it away? Such an expensive dress?” The nurse looked toward Fu Tingzhou.
He had carried her into the hospital—handsome man, beautiful woman—they looked perfect together. She had assumed they were newlyweds.
Li Zhi noticed the misunderstanding and explained, “He’s not the groom. The one who rushed in here with the child downstairs—that’s him. I’m not marrying him. Toss it.”
The nurse could see the intense hatred and grief in Li Zhi’s eyes.
She sympathized with her. The groom was outrageous—leaving the bride alone on their wedding day. He didn’t deserve her. A breakup was the right choice.
After the nurse left—
Fu Tingzhou said, “I’ll cover all your medical expenses. I’ll visit until the end of my leave. Once your brain scan results come out, if you need to stay longer, I’ll hire a caregiver to take care of you until you’re discharged.”
“Okay.” Li Zhi responded absentmindedly.
Fu Tingzhou thought she must be devastated. “If you feel like crying, go ahead and cry.”
He once saw her outside the military base waiting for Lu Yanzhi—she’d been vibrant and full of life, like a blooming flower.
Now she looked like she had been ravaged by a storm.
“I’m not sad. I’m glad. I stopped the loss in time—better before marriage than being torn apart afterward.” Thinking of getting a second chance, Li Zhi was so overwhelmed she couldn’t stop her tears.
Fu Tingzhou handed her a handkerchief.
She hesitated, about to decline, but then he said, “Go ahead. Wipe them away. Since you’ve chosen to cut ties, live for yourself.”
She accepted it. “Thanks. I’ll wash it and return it to you.”
He nodded slightly. “Mm.”
Just then, a female voice came from outside the room: “Little sister is just too much. Huanhuan’s dad saved Brother Yanzhi’s life. Life is precious. How could she act so dramatically? So petty.”
Li Zhi’s mother, Yuan Huilan, said, “Jasmine, stop talking. Let’s go in and check on Li Zhi.”
Li Moli stuck out her tongue. “Okay, I won’t say more. I only meant well. Mom, don’t be mad.”
“I know.”
Soon after, the door was pushed open.
Her father, Li Yongge, roared, “Li Zhi, who the hell hit you? I’ll go teach them a lesson!”
He used to be in the army and had a naturally loud voice. He’d risen to deputy battalion commander before going into business and now ran a successful clothing factory.
Sizing up Fu Tingzhou—A regiment commander?
Didn’t even look thirty. He had only become a deputy battalion commander at forty. This young man was impressive.
Li Zhi quickly spoke. “Dad, I accidentally ran into his car. It wasn’t his fault.”
If Fu Tingzhou hadn’t braked in time, she would have died.
“This is a hospital, not a factory. Can’t you keep your voice down?” Yuan Huilan pushed her husband aside and asked gently, “Zhizhi, what did the doctor say? Are you badly hurt?”
Li Zhi had only returned to the Li family for less than two years. She had refused to repeat school and insisted on marrying Lu Yanzhi, causing some rifts at home. But compared to life and death, that meant nothing now.
“I’m fine. Just a mild concussion.”
Li Yongge was shocked. “A concussion? The brain’s the most important part—we have to take this seriously.”
Her third brother, Li Jingze, scolded her, “Li Zhi, can’t you show a little dignity? You were willing to die over a man? Is that what your life is worth?”
He was studying at the province’s top tech university, where the female students focused on academics and future careers.
He couldn’t understand her behavior.
Li Zhi explained, “I wasn’t trying to die. I was just too upset and wandered into the street. And—I’m breaking off the engagement. I’m not marrying him.”
She would never marry Lu Yanzhi again, not even if it killed her.
Li Jingze looked at her in surprise. “So not only did the crash give you a concussion, it knocked some sense into you?”
“Yes. I’ve come to my senses.”
If she hadn’t learned her lesson even in another lifetime, she would have lived in vain.
“What?” Her family was shocked at first, then skeptical. “You’re calling off the wedding? Are you serious?”
Li Moli didn’t believe her at all. She pouted, “Sister, stop pretending. You said you wouldn’t marry anyone but Brother Yanzhi. You hurt our parents and brothers for him. You even threatened to die. We don’t believe you.”
No one did.
Li Zhi’s cold eyes swept over her. “Does your belief matter? You’re just an adopted daughter of the Li family. This engagement—I’m breaking it off. I’m not marrying him.”
Shamed by her harsh words, Li Moli lowered her head and wiped away tears.
Just then, the door was pushed open again—
“I disagree!”
The person who entered was none other than Lu Yanzhi.
