Chapter 45 Grandpa Mu’s Show-off
Grandpa Mu sent Mu Jinghan upstairs to study and Chu Yunxi, not wanting to face Grandpa Mu and Mu Xiwan alone, also found an excuse to go back to her bedroom.
Seeing that those two annoying people had left, Grandpa Mu turned his attention back to Xiaohua. Mu Xiwan was usually busy and didn’t have much time to accompany Xiaohua. Now that someone could finally keep it company, Xiaohua willingly accompanied the old man and made him happy.
Seeing that it was still some time before dinner, Grandpa Mu decided to take Xiaohua out for a stroll. So he called Mu Xiwan, and the three of them, an old man, a young woman, and a little bird, were sure to make everyone envious.
Grandpa Mu and Mu Xiwan strolled to the square. The setting sun stretched their shadows long. A gentle breeze blew, bringing a touch of summer coolness.
When Grandpa Mu met someone he knew, he would proudly introduce, “This is my granddaughter, and she’s also this year’s top scorer in the Beijing city college entrance exam!”
His voice was loud and full of pride, his smile like a blooming flower.
And when introducing Xiaohua, he would say, “This is my granddaughter’s little bird. We have a special connection, it’s very obedient, and very intelligent!”
Whenever Grandpa Mu introduced Xiaohua, it would also cooperate by chirping softly at the other person, as if greeting them.
Xiaohua’s lively appearance, coupled with Grandpa Mu’s enthusiastic introduction, attracted the attention of many people. Later, because of Xiaohua, Grandpa Mu and Mu Xiwan were almost surrounded by people in the square.
Seeing Grandpa Mu still showing off, Mu Xiwan thought to herself that she would have to go out less with her grandpa in the future. This scene was too lively, and she was a little overwhelmed.
Just as the sky began to darken, Grandpa Mu, worried that his granddaughter would be hungry, bid farewell to everyone. Mu Xiwan was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when she heard a voice coming from afar, “Old Mu, I just came out, are you going home?”
Mu Xiwan followed the sound and saw an old man about the same age as her grandpa walking over from the opposite side. But when Mu Xiwan saw the old man, her brows furrowed involuntarily, then quickly spread out.
“Old Ye, it’s you! Why didn’t you bring your birdcage today?”
Old Ye saw the little bird perched on Grandpa Mu’s shoulder and instantly understood why the old man suddenly mentioned his birdcage.
Old Ye pointed at Grandpa Mu and laughed, “You, why? Did your wife finally agree to let you keep a bird?”
It was common knowledge throughout the neighborhood that Old Mrs. Mu didn’t allow Grandpa Mu to keep birds. When Grandpa Mu heard Old Ye say this, he immediately puffed up his cheeks and said, “My old woman doesn’t let me keep those noisy birds that chirp all day, but look at my Xiaohua, how obedient it is, doesn’t make any noise, and is very intelligent. We don’t even need a birdcage!” Grandpa Mu’s voice was full of love and protection for Xiaohua.
Grandpa Mu then began to show off Xiaohua. Old Ye said a few words to Grandpa Mu, then turned his attention to Mu Xiwan.
“Old Mu, is this the Xiwan you mentioned?”
This afternoon, several old men were drinking tea and playing chess together, and Grandpa Mu mentioned his granddaughter to everyone, making the old men envious.
Many of these old men had granddaughters, but they didn’t have a granddaughter who was a top scorer in the college entrance exam like Grandpa Mu.
Seeing Old Ye’s envious gaze, Grandpa Mu immediately laughed and said, “This is my granddaughter, Xiwan. Xiwan, this is your Grandpa Ye!”
“Hello, Grandpa Ye!” Mu Xiwan said politely.
“Ai, ai, good! Good!” Old Ye looked at Mu Xiwan with a loving face, his eyes full of admiration and fondness.
He looked at Grandpa Mu with some envy. In their Ye family, they were all just boys, and neither of his two daughters-in-law had given him a granddaughter.
Old Mu was really lucky. Not only had he found his granddaughter, but she was also so beautiful and her academic performance was so good.
But…?
Old Ye, as if thinking of something, looked at Grandpa Mu’s smug look and couldn’t help but say, “Old Mu, now that Xiwan has come back, shouldn’t her marriage with Mo Yan be put on the agenda?”
Grandpa Mu, who was enjoying Old Ye’s envious gaze, immediately lost his smugness when he heard Old Ye’s words. He quickly blew his beard and glared at Old Ye, “Marriage? What marriage? Our Xiwan just came back, we’re not willing to let her get married so soon!”
Grandpa Mu’s voice was urgent and resolute. After saying that, he immediately pulled Mu Xiwan and went home.
Grandpa Mu walked quickly all the way, as if afraid that Old Ye would catch up.
Mu Xiwan was also in a state of shock. She had only been back at the Mu family for two days and had just accepted her relatives. Today, she was told a shocking piece of news: she was already engaged to someone!
Mu Xiwan followed behind Grandpa Mu, feeling a little helpless. She couldn’t help but ask, “Grandpa, what’s going on?”
Grandpa Mu turned his head and looked behind him. Seeing that there was no one behind him, he secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He inwardly complained about Old Ye, but seeing his granddaughter’s hopeful eyes waiting for him to explain, Grandpa Mu pretended to be relaxed and said, “It’s nothing, it’s just that your mother has a very good relationship with Old Ye’s eldest daughter-in-law, Chu Manqin. When your mother was pregnant with you, they arranged a baby marriage between you and Chu Manqin’s youngest son, Ye Moyan.
But Xiwan, don’t worry. You’re still young now, so we won’t talk about the engagement issue. Even if you really don’t want to marry him in the future, it’s fine. Grandpa is here, Grandpa will decide for you!”
Grandpa Mu looked at his granddaughter and assured her confidently.
After hearing Grandpa Mu’s explanation, Mu Xiwan also understood the situation of this engagement. But as Grandpa said, she was still young, so in a few years, maybe the other party would already have someone they liked. So Mu Xiwan didn’t take it to heart.
Now, Mu Xiwan was concerned about something else. When she saw Old Ye just now, she noticed a cloud of black mist around his head. Logically, just now, Old Ye was surrounded by a light of merit, and evil spirits couldn’t enter his body.
What was this black mist? This was something Mu Xiwan was puzzled about. She knew that she was self-taught in arcane arts, and there were still many things she didn’t understand, and she needed to continue exploring.
Besides, if she could cure Old Ye’s illness, she would definitely gain more merit. In fact, even if she didn’t get merit for saving Old Ye, she still wanted to save him.
Because for these old revolutionaries who had military merits and devoted their entire lives to the people, Mu Xiwan had always admired them.
Even her own grandpa was full of merit light, so in the Mu family, Mu Xiwan was more willing to be close to Grandpa Mu.
Thinking about this, Mu Xiwan held Grandpa Mu’s arm and walked slowly home. As they walked, Mu Xiwan said, “Grandpa, I saw something near Grandpa Ye’s brain just now. Why don’t you remind Grandpa Ye and tell him to go to the hospital for a checkup?”
