Chapter 1

The night was deep.

At nine o’clock sharp, the bar located in a prime area was already bustling, with dazzling lights and a fiery atmosphere.

Various intense dance tracks pounded against the eardrums, and the air was saturated with a decadent sense of indulgence and disorientation.

[Jin Wu, why aren’t you here yet? Is your patient more important than celebrating your boyfriend’s birthday?]

[Do you know how embarrassed you’re making me?]

[Quit your job tomorrow! Being a doctor is exhausting and doesn’t even make you look good. You’d be better off spending your time with me.]

Jin Wu read Fu Yuchen’s messages while holding a birthday cake outside the bar.

After a busy day as a medical professional, her eyes reflected a trace of weariness. She glanced at the controlling words on the screen, pursed her lips, and her gaze dimmed slightly.

It was the same thing, over and over.

From the moment she aspired to become a doctor and worked hard to realize her dream, her boyfriend had never supported her.

Instead, he constantly pressured her with domineering and narrow-minded remarks, demanding she resign to focus solely on him, relegating her to nothing more than a decorative vase.

Jin Wu pocketed her phone without replying. Calmly, she weaved through the noisy, crowded crowd toward the VIP suite.

She had never believed that giving up her beloved career for a man was the right thing to do.

Even though Fu Yuchen was the one she had long pursued as her beacon of salvation, the man she had silently admired, she had never wavered in this principle.

Because it was her bottom line—her unwavering conviction.

It had nothing to do with the depth of her feelings.

As she reached the door of the private room, it was slightly ajar.

Just as she placed her hand on the doorknob to enter, several familiar mocking voices reached her ears.

“Fu Ge, it’s your birthday today, and that illegitimate daughter dares to be late? If you didn’t take a liking to her, what right does someone of her lowly status have to attend our gathering?”

“She doesn’t even prepare a surprise for her boyfriend’s birthday, and she’s kept you waiting. Fu Ge, you’re way too lenient. How can you let a mere illegitimate daughter be so bold as to step all over you?”

“Don’t tell me you’re whipped by her, Fu Ge?”

Across the room, Gu Fan exaggeratedly chimed in, “Could it be you’ve been together this long and haven’t even touched that illegitimate daughter?”

As if his sore spot was hit, the man sitting at the center of the private room, already looking displeased, grew even darker in expression.

He tilted his head back, finishing the remaining half of his drink, and said coldly, “Shut up.”

Gu Fan burst into laughter and spoke even more freely, “Oh no, did I actually get it right? I can’t believe our invincible Fu Ge is so spineless, letting a lowly illegitimate daughter control him. I’m dying of laughter!”

Jin Wu stood silently at the door, her grip on the cake tightening involuntarily.

Because she was the illegitimate daughter of the Jin family, someone unworthy of the light, she had always been the subject of disdain and ridicule among these privileged young masters.

At first, it hurt, leaving her confused about what she had done wrong.

Over time, however, it felt as though her body had grown an immunity, automatically filtering out their harsh mockery.

Bang!

The sound of a wine glass slammed heavily on the table.

“Who said I’m controlled by Jin Wu?”

Fu Yuchen tugged at his meticulously tied tie irritably and said coldly, “Her? She doesn’t deserve it.”

With that, he wrapped his arm around the woman sitting beside him and, amid the playful jeers, lowered his head to kiss her lips!

Jin Wu’s pupils trembled slightly.

Though the room was warm, a biting chill seeped into her.

She recognized the woman—Qin Yiyao, who had always lingered around them since high school under the guise of friendship. Wherever Fu Yuchen was, Qin Yiyao was there too.

“Yuchen, stop teasing me like this,” the woman giggled, playfully resisting against his chest. There was no sign of embarrassment or anger—she smiled brightly instead.

Fu Yuchen didn’t even glance at her, pushing her away with casual disdain. Lifting his glass, he said to the crowd, “See that? Who said Jin Wu controls me?”

For a moment, the room was silent before erupting into excited cheers as though witnessing a thrilling spectacle.

“Damn! Fu Ge, you’re the wildest!”

“This is what a real man looks like!”

Someone glanced outside. “Fu Ge, aren’t you afraid Jin Wu might see this and break up with you?”

As if hearing the most ridiculous possibility, Fu Yuchen smirked arrogantly, a glint of disdain in his refined features.

Swirling the wine in his glass lazily, he sneered, “Jin Wu wouldn’t dare leave me. Without me, she’s just a pitiful illegitimate daughter.”

Boom—

It was as if thunder had struck in Jin Wu’s ears. Her lashes trembled, and her heart sank heavily.

Pitiful illegitimate daughter.

She had always believed those words would never come from his mouth.

After all, he was the one who had extended a hand to save her from the suffocating darkness of a basement when she was young.

He was the one who secretly left her favorite strawberry milk on her desk when she was upset over a bad exam score.

He was the one who rushed her to the hospital in the dead of winter when she fell ill during a school performance, staying up all night to care for her.

Jin Wu had received too little love in her life, and Fu Yuchen was the first to show her kindness.

So even when he treated her coldly or ambiguously, even when others mocked her as a tagalong, she had always worked hard to become better, tirelessly pursuing him, seeing him as her guiding light.

Later, in their senior year, he unexpectedly confessed to her on the rooftop, fulfilling her long-held wish.

But now, she realized it was all wrong.

She thought he was different, that he wouldn’t look down on her like the others.

But the reality was, in his eyes, she was nothing more than a pitiful illegitimate daughter who couldn’t leave him.

Even his betrayal came with an air of entitlement, certain that she wouldn’t dare to get angry.

Jin Wu looked at Fu Yuchen sitting inside, and the last glimmer of light in her eyes faded completely.

The boy who had once lived in her heart was long gone.

And so, there was nothing left to regret.

She might lack love, but she didn’t lack intelligence.

And she certainly wasn’t generous enough to share a man with another woman.

Jin Wu raised her now calm eyes and directly pushed open the door to walk in.

The laughter in the private room immediately stopped, and everyone’s gaze turned toward her.

As before, there was mockery, disdain, but no apology.

No one expected her to appear suddenly.

Fu Yuchen’s face flickered with discomfort, but he quickly regained his composure. “You finally came from the hospital? Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you?”

He pushed an entire glass of wine toward her, seeming to smooth things over, yet his tone was commanding. “Be obedient and go around to toast each of them, apologize, and tell them there won’t be a next time.”

Jin Wu stood in place, her gaze faint. “I’ve seen everything.”

Fu Yuchen didn’t understand. “What?”

“I said I saw you kiss her.”

Jin Wu’s lips curved coldly. “You’re really disgusting, Fu Yuchen.”

Her voice was not loud, but it was clear enough for everyone around to hear.

In an instant, several incredulous gazes were fixed on her, as if shocked that the usually obedient and quiet woman would publicly confront someone.

Fu Yuchen’s face darkened further.

“Jin Wu, what’s your attitude now?”

He stared at her, not accustomed to her now looking down at him, his eyes full of warning. “Don’t throw a tantrum. I’ve told you before, I hate disobedient things.”

Sitting beside him, Qin Yiyao seemed frightened, her flustered tone trying to mediate. “Xiao Wu, it’s not what you saw earlier. You misunderstood, we were just…”

“Please shut up.”

Before she could finish, Jin Wu interrupted, her voice sharp. “I don’t like your breath.”

“Jin Wu! Have you had enough of this?!”

Fu Yuchen never expected Jin Wu to suddenly act like a completely different person—so foreign and unsettling. “What kind of attitude is this? Do you know today is my birthday? Hurry up and apologize to everyone!”

Jin Wu frowned.

It turned out that without all the filters, he was just an arrogant man.

“Oh, I almost forgot today is your birthday.”

She raised her hand, holding the cake, her eyes gently curving. “So, happy birthday.”

Jin Wu’s beauty had always been clean and stunning, like the bright moon hanging high in the night sky, a cold beauty that could only be admired from afar.

Even in a bar, dressed simply in a white dress, she exuded an enchanting charm that made it hard for anyone to look away—graceful and alluring.

Especially now, with her eyes lightly lifted, the mole at the corner of her right eye added a touch of captivating playfulness to her smile, giving the illusion of a celestial being descending to earth.

Fu Yuchen couldn’t help but lose focus, almost mesmerized, as he reached out to take it.

“Bang!”

Just as he reached out, Jin Wu suddenly loosened her grip.

In front of him, she threw the cake directly into the nearby trash can.

Jin Wu met his stunned gaze, not looking back as she turned to leave.

“And—”

“Fu Yuchen, you’ve been dumped.”

Jin Wu walked outside, feeling the air become clearer.

Her expression remained neutral as she looked up at the night sky.

Maybe after so many disappointments, it wasn’t as hard to bear as she had imagined.

There was only a faint sense of powerlessness that slowly crept into her heart.

Jin Wu gave a self-deprecating smile.

It turned out there really wasn’t a single person in this world who could love her with complete sincerity and forever.

“Ugh…”

To make time for Fu Yuchen’s birthday celebration tonight, she had been overloaded with work all day, skipping dinner, and now suffering from low blood sugar, her head starting to spin.

And her high heels, too small, had rubbed her heels raw.

Dizzy, Jin Wu descended the stairs, lost her balance, and was about to fall forward.

The next second.

A scorching heat suddenly enveloped her.

Like the gears of fate turning.

The fierce sun embraced the moon, gently yet firmly holding her waist, pulling her into his arms, their heartbeats resonating together like destiny.

“Why are you being so careless the moment we meet, little class monitor?”

Before Jin Wu could react, a deep, seductive voice, with a hint of urgency, suddenly rang in her ear.

Who?

Jin Wu looked up in surprise and met the man’s deep, fiery peach blossom eyes.

In that instant, all the surrounding noise seemed to disappear, replaced by the sounds of cicadas and wind in the summer campus, and a familiar feeling slowly washed over her.

She blinked in confusion. “You are…”

Duan Shiyan lowered his gaze, his hand tightening around her waist. His fingers trembled slightly, as if trying to suppress the overwhelming emotions surging within him.

“Did you break up with your boyfriend?”

He gazed at her slightly reddened eyes, his usual rebellious demeanor giving way to a brief flash of hurt and anger.

Soon, he regained his usual lazy composure, his eyes narrowing with a charming curve, a faint dimple appearing at the corner of his mouth.

“How about I make it up to you with a new one?”

The man leaned closer, his eyes locking with hers, his deep, magnetic voice hitting her ear like a forbidden melody, “Little class monitor, what do you think of me?”
