Feasting on Splendor Chapter 39

Chapter 39 – Someone Died

Xuan Yue had originally thought Lin Furong would handle everything well, but he didn’t expect that after just one day, her younger sister from her natal family would come running here.

He was a little displeased—this already exceeded the boundaries of what he had agreed to when he allowed Qingfeng’s absurd request.

But what shocked him even more was that the village girl’s sister actually called him “Brother-in-law.”

“I knew it would never end,” Xuan Yue thought with a headache as he glanced at Lin Hehua. He held back his temper, bypassed her, and entered the courtyard.

This cold attitude naturally worried Lin Hehua. She turned around and asked Wen Lan, “Sister, does Brother-in-law not like me coming to your house?”

“Nothing like that. He’s just not a talkative person,” Wen Lan comforted her.

But she was also nervous inside. The first condition the hunter had set for letting her stay here was that her natal family must not interfere in his life.

Clearly, Lin Hehua’s arrival had violated that agreement.

However, Wen Lan also understood that if it weren’t something urgent, Hehua wouldn’t have come looking for her.

How could that Auntie Song suddenly die?

A life was at stake—Wen Lan couldn’t worry about whether the hunter was angry anymore. She grabbed Hehua’s hand again, ready to rush back to Yushou Village.

“Wait a moment.”

A voice came from the courtyard gate.

They saw the hunter still holding the headless wild boar, his expression calm as he looked at Wen Lan and said, “I’m going with you.”

He? He wanted to go to Yushou Village with them?

Wen Lan thought her ears were playing tricks on her—she must have misheard.

“Hunter big brother, what did you just say?”

“I said I’m going with you. Someone died, didn’t they? I want to take a look.”

“That’s great if Brother-in-law can come!” Little Hehua looked at Wen Lan with hopeful eyes. She knew her sister didn’t really want her brother-in-law to go to the village.

“You’re sure you want to go?” Wen Lan asked again.

“Of course.”

Since the hunter insisted, Wen Lan couldn’t press further in front of Hehua. The three of them set off toward Yushou Village.

Naturally, the headless pig was brought along too.

When they arrived at the Lin household, Wen Lan hadn’t even stepped through the gate when she heard wails and howls coming from inside.

The howling came from a middle-aged man in his forties or fifties. He was slumped over a fat, round body on the ground, crying out “Abao’s mother” while pointing at Lin Furong’s mother and demanding money.

“Abao’s mother ate your family’s food and died! The Lin family must pay compensation!”

“That’s right, you have to pay!” echoed another fat ball of a man standing beside him.

This second man was none other than Song Dabao, the son of the deceased Auntie Song.

As soon as Wen Lan and the hunter arrived, Lin Hehua called out loudly to her parents, “Dad, Mom! Sister and Brother-in-law are back!”

Lin Furong’s mother, upon hearing that her daughter and son-in-law had returned, rushed toward the gate as if she’d found her saviors. She grabbed Wen Lan and whispered anxiously, “The meat you brought home killed someone!”

“No way,” Wen Lan replied, though her voice lacked confidence. After all, she had stolen that meat from the hunter’s house—who knew if there was something like rat poison on it?

Lin Furong’s mother dragged her inside while Wen Lan quickly scanned the scene.

The Lin family had indeed done as she suggested and hosted a banquet for the village elders. That much was obvious from the leftovers still on the table.

She quickly looked at the people gathered around. The clan elder of Yushou Village was seated at the head, stroking his snowy white beard, looking completely at a loss.

Clearly, even he couldn’t figure out how the Song family’s daughter-in-law could have died at the banquet.

Seeing this, Wen Lan finally relaxed. She was certain Auntie Song hadn’t died from eating the Lin family’s food—everyone had eaten it, after all.

At that moment, the man from the Song family who had been kneeling and wailing suddenly stood up and turned his anger toward Wen Lan.

“You! It was you! You killed Abao’s mother!”
