First Night as a Military Wife in the ’80s: The Strongest Officer Broke His Vow Chapter 32

Chapter 32 – A Battle That Made Her Famous

At the entrance of the residential compound, Wang Yufen was holding a basin, smiling smugly.

“Oh my, isn’t this the new bride of Commander Song? What brings you through here?”

Jiang Zhi Ning clenched her fists and shot her a sharp glare. “You did that on purpose.”

Wang Yufen placed one hand on her hip and replied innocently,
“Commander Song’s wife, don’t wrong me. How would I know you’d pass by here? It’s not like I deliberately poured the foot-washing water on you. Oh dear, your face is soaked. How does it taste?”

Wang Yufen beamed triumphantly, clearly relishing her petty victory.

Aunt Xia, who lived next door, stepped out after hearing the commotion. She burst into laughter upon seeing Jiang Zhi Ning soaked and disheveled.
“Heaven truly has eyes. Bad people always get what’s coming to them.”

She shot Jiang Zhi Ning a venomous glare. Last night, because she didn’t manage to get more money from her, she couldn’t even afford meat—she’d been furious ever since.

“Apologize,” Jiang Zhi Ning growled through gritted teeth, her veins bulging.

Wang Yufen scoffed as if she’d heard the world’s funniest joke.
“Apologize? Don’t be ridiculous. You were the blind one. How is that my fault? Weren’t you strutting around yesterday looking so glamorous? Now look at you—drenched like a wet hen. What a sight! Everyone, come take a look!”

Her shout drew several gossip-hungry aunties peeking out curiously.

Water dripped from Jiang Zhi Ning’s hair, and her soaked qipao clung tightly to her body, revealing her curves.

A few men nearby couldn’t tear their eyes away, openly staring at her chest and hips.

Jiang Zhi Ning flushed with rage. Her anger was bubbling over.

Liu Zhi Lan, not far away, rushed over with a coat and quickly helped cover her.
“Zhi Ning, quick, wear this. I’ll walk you back.”

Wang Yufen sneered even more proudly, her voice oozing mockery:
“How did my foot water taste, huh? Commander Song’s wife, watch where you walk. Not all paths are meant for someone like you.”

The onlookers watched her embarrassment but no one stepped in. After all, Jiang Zhi Ning was new and unfamiliar. Meanwhile, Wang Yufen had a reputation as a bully. Compared to the two, they all knew whose side to stay on.

Seeing the taunting in Wang Yufen’s eyes, Jiang Zhi Ning’s temple throbbed.
You really think I’m Hello Kitty, huh? Let me show you who you’re messing with.

Just as Liu Zhi Lan was about to help her leave, Jiang Zhi Ning suddenly grabbed a bamboo pole from the side.

Before anyone could react, Jiang Zhi Ning raised the bamboo and swung it straight at Wang Yufen.

Wang Yufen was hit squarely and gasped in shock.
“You dare hit me?!”

“You dared pour water on me, so yes—I dare hit you!”

Jiang Zhi Ning, like a woman possessed, swung the bamboo pole again and again.

Instead of internalizing her rage, she unleashed it.

Wang Yufen tried to dodge, but Jiang Zhi Ning handled the pole like a natural, landing blow after blow.

“Ah! It hurts! What are you all standing around for?! Stop this madwoman!” Wang Yufen shrieked.

Jiang Zhi Ning’s eyes were blazing red.
“This is between her and me. If anyone dares interfere, don’t blame me for not being polite.”

Given how many people Wang Yufen had bullied before, no one stepped up. They preferred to watch the show.

Even Aunt Xia considered helping, but upon seeing Jiang Zhi Ning’s furious expression, she quietly backed away in fear of getting hit too.

Wang Yufen screamed,
“You’re insane! Stop! Or I’ll call the authorities—help! Someone help!”

But Jiang Zhi Ning continued until Wang Yufen was wailing and begging for mercy:
“Please! That’s enough—I was wrong! I’m sorry, I apologize!”

Wang Yufen finally surrendered.

Only then did Jiang Zhi Ning stop, bamboo pole still in hand.
“Wang Yufen, huh? Let me be clear—I, Jiang Zhi Ning, am not someone you can mess with. Try it again, and I won’t go easy on you.”

Seeing that she’d stopped, Wang Yufen tried to bluff,
“I’m going to report you to the higher-ups for hitting me!”

“Great. Let’s go now. You poured foot water on me deliberately. You started this. Why don’t we go to the public security bureau and see who’s in the wrong?” Jiang Zhi Ning shot back coldly.

Seeing her calm and defiant attitude, Wang Yufen suddenly chickened out.

Jiang Zhi Ning snorted, threw the bamboo pole onto the ground, and left with a frosty expression.

The surrounding crowd was stunned.
“Who knew Commander Song’s wife was such a badass?”
“Seriously! She looked so soft and sweet, but she really beat the hell out of Wang Yufen. She’s no pushover.”

Just like that, Jiang Zhi Ning earned her reputation. Everyone now knew: beneath her delicate exterior was a fierce woman not to be trifled with.

The crowd dispersed, and Wang Yufen was left moaning in pain. She had wanted to make an example of Jiang Zhi Ning, to show her who was boss.

But instead, she’d been publicly humiliated.

“That damn girl… just you wait,” Wang Yufen muttered through gritted teeth.

At noon, Song Yuzhou returned from the military base to the family housing complex. On the way, several wives and relatives stared at him and whispered.

Confused, Song Yuzhou didn’t stop and continued walking.

“Brother Yuzhou!” Xia Chunyu suddenly blocked his way.

Looking at the young girl in front of him, Song Yuzhou stayed calm and kept his distance.
“What is it?”

Seeing the handsome, upright man before her, Xia Chunyu blushed. Even though he was already married, jealousy still burned inside her.

She had always liked Song Yuzhou, but her mother said marrying him meant hardship—three children to raise and no chance for her own. That was too pitiful.

So under Aunt Xia’s persuasion, she buried her feelings. She figured since no one else would marry him, she could spend time with him, and maybe one day, he’d fall for her and become her secret lover…

But he brought home a wife instead. And everyone was gossiping about how lovingly he washed bedsheets for her. Clearly, he doted on her.

The more Xia Chunyu thought about it, the more jealous she became.

“Brother Yuzhou, your wife beat up Sister Zhang today,” she tattled.
“She was so vicious! Sister Zhang is still in bed and can’t get up from the pain.”

Song Yuzhou frowned. “Which Sister Zhang?”

“Sister Yufen.” Xia Chunyu stepped closer.
“Brother Yuzhou, your wife is super fierce. Don’t be fooled by her.”

A flash of surprise crossed Song Yuzhou’s eyes.
“My wife is gentle and well-mannered. She wouldn’t do that.”

“Don’t let appearances deceive you! A bunch of people saw it today—Sister Zhang got beat up really badly!”

Xia Chunyu assumed he’d never like a shrew like that. He must have been tricked into marrying her.

But Song Yuzhou recovered quickly.
“Xia Chunyu, little girls shouldn’t gossip. My wife is an educated, decent person. If she really did strike someone, then the other party was definitely in the wrong.”
