First Night as a Military Wife in the ’80s: The Strongest Officer Broke His Vow Chapter 6

Chapter 6: How About I Devote Myself to You and Become Your Wife?

A cold and handsome face came into view. Dressed in his military uniform, he looked righteous and imposing.

Behind him stood a group of soldiers. When they saw the thief fall to the ground, they immediately stepped forward and seized him.

“Sir, how should we handle this?” a soldier asked.

“Take him to the Public Security Bureau and hand him over to the police,” Song Yuzhou said in a low voice.

“Yes, sir,” the soldier responded and escorted the thief away.

Jiang Zhiníng looked at the officer in front of her and said with a light chuckle, “Comrade Yuzhou, don’t you think we’re really fated to meet?”

Song Yuzhou stood upright and replied, “I’ll walk you home.”

Though it wasn’t too late yet, it was still dangerous for a woman to walk the streets alone at night.

“Comrade Yuzhou, you’re really kind-hearted,” Jiang Zhiníng said playfully.

The dim streetlamp cast shadows over her face, but in the shadow, her bright, almond-shaped eyes sparkled.

Her voice had a teasing lilt at the end, yet it wasn’t off-putting.

“I’m a soldier,” Song Yuzhou answered seriously.

Jiang Zhiníng pointed at her suitcase and spread her hands. “Unfortunately, I was just kicked out of the house and have nowhere to go.”

Song Yuzhou frowned. “Kicked out?”

“Yes. I exposed Shen An’an for pushing me off a cliff. Naturally, they won’t let me stay in the Jiang family anymore. And without an introduction letter, I can’t even check into a guesthouse. I guess I’ll be sleeping on the street tonight.”

She sighed as she spoke.

Hearing this, Song Yuzhou said in a low tone, “I’ll go to the guesthouse and get a room for you.”

Jiang Zhiníng’s eyes lit up. “Comrade Yuzhou, you’re truly the embodiment of kindness and beauty!”

Suddenly thinking of something, she stepped closer to him. With her hands behind her back, she stood on tiptoe and leaned in slightly. “Comrade Yuzhou, what do you think of how I look?”

As she blinked her long lashes, her eyes shimmered with watery light, gazing straight at him.

Song Yuzhou stiffened and stood up straighter, trying to pull back from her face. “You… you look fine.”

Seeing how awkward and stiff he was, Jiang Zhiníng found it quite endearing. Tilting her head, she smiled. “Comrade Yuzhou, since I can’t repay you for saving me… how about I devote myself to you and become your wife?”

He was the only person she knew in this world. After rescuing her several times, her heart was beginning to stir.

And since the book said he would eventually remain unmarried, why not change that fate? She could become his wife and rewrite his ending.

Besides, she needed a place to stay, and he needed someone to care for him. They could help each other.

Song Yuzhou’s gaze wavered, but he still refused. “No. I’m older, and I already have three brats.”

Even with such a difficult situation, he still didn’t want to burden anyone else.

Seeing his firm refusal, Jiang Zhiníng felt even more respect for him and said with a smile, “I like older men—they’re more considerate. I get to be a mom without going through childbirth, and it’s buy one, get three free. Sounds like a good deal to me.”

She had no problem raising kids without the pain of labor.

Song Yuzhou’s heart wavered again. Not many girls would be willing to raise someone else’s children.

“I can help you find a place to stay. There’s no need to wrong yourself like this,” he said, still holding firm.

Upon hearing that, Jiang Zhiníng grabbed the front of his uniform. “Song Yuzhou, I really think you’re a good man. Didn’t you say you’d take responsibility? What—were you just talking?”

“No, I wasn’t!” Song Yuzhou denied immediately.

Looking up at the tall and handsome man in front of her, Jiang Zhiníng thought maybe he really liked her too—just hesitating because of his kids and age.

“Then are you willing to marry me?” she asked, eyes sparkling.

Seeing the light in her eyes, Song Yuzhou’s heart skipped a beat. But he still wanted to confirm one last time: “You really… don’t mind?”

From the first moment they met, she had stunned him.

And in the cave, when she jokingly told him to take responsibility, he had actually taken her seriously.

“Then will you treat me well?” she asked softly.

“I will,” Song Yuzhou answered firmly.

Jiang Zhiníng said nothing, just suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck and tiptoed to kiss his cheek.

That kiss completely stunned Song Yuzhou.

“You’re mine now,” Jiang Zhiníng said with a bright, mischievous smile.

Seeing his dumbfounded expression, she covered her mouth and giggled.

Song Yuzhou blushed to the roots of his ears and fumbled for words. “I… um…”

“Comrade Yuzhou, don’t forget to apply for the marriage certificate soon,” she said, her eyes curved in amusement.

“Alright,” he replied seriously, staring at her.

Just as Jiang Zhiníng turned around, she saw several soldiers standing nearby, staring at them in shock.

Realizing they had witnessed the whole scene, her face flushed red. Oh no—would they think she was too forward?

“You’re dismissed. Return to base,” Song Yuzhou commanded in his usual stern tone.

Though clearly curious, the soldiers responded in unison, “Yes, sir!”

Song Yuzhou picked up her luggage and walked with her toward the guesthouse.

After just a few steps, he felt something soft in his hand. Startled, he looked down and saw her small, fair hand holding his.

His face instantly turned red.

“We’re dating with marriage in mind, right?” Jiang Zhiníng said with a teasing smile.

Blushing, Song Yuzhou mustered up the courage to gently squeeze her hand back.

Seeing his innocent reaction, Jiang Zhiníng felt like she’d made the right bet.

Back when she read the book, she had already liked this character. A man who stayed unmarried all his life to raise someone else’s children had to be a good person.

Inside the guesthouse, Song Yuzhou pulled out his ID to get her a room, then led her upstairs.

In front of the room, looking at the delicate and charming girl beside him, his heart started to race.

Suddenly, Jiang Zhiníng held out her hand.

Confused, Song Yuzhou placed his hand on hers.

With a mischievous smile, she asked, “Comrade Yuzhou, did you just want to hold my hand?”

Realizing the misunderstanding, Song Yuzhou quickly pulled his hand back, ears burning red.

Seeing his embarrassment, Jiang Zhiníng stepped closer and leaned in. Her warm breath brushed his face. “So our Comrade Yuzhou knows how to get shy.”

The playful tone, the upward lilt in her voice, and her faint fragrance made the iron-blooded commander—who was fearless even on the battlefield—so nervous he had to swallow hard.

Watching his Adam’s apple bob, Jiang Zhiníng thought teasing him was unexpectedly fun.

“Now… can I have your unit’s phone number?” she asked sweetly.

He nodded, ears red, and quickly scribbled it on a piece of paper.

Jiang Zhiníng took the paper, her long fingertips brushing his palm flirtatiously.

It was soft and ticklish.

Song Yuzhou’s breathing hitched.

“Make sure you lock the door before sleeping,” he said, trying to compose himself. “Once I’m back at the base, I’ll apply for the marriage. It should take about half a month. Wait for me here. Call if anything happens.”

“Okay. I’ll wait for you,” Jiang Zhiníng replied with a smile, waving him off before entering the room.

After the door closed, Song Yuzhou let out a long breath and clutched his chest. “Why is my heart racing like this? Something’s not right…”

He decided he’d get a check-up as soon as he returned to base. After all, he was about to start a family—if he was sick, it had to be treated!
