Chapter 25: Saving the Pregnant Woman, Almost Becoming an Obstetrician
Upon hearing the urgent news, Yang Qingyan’s heart tightened. She understood that there was no time to waste when it came to childbirth. Without a moment to ponder the medicinal herbs on the mountain, she quickly nodded in agreement. “I understand. Let’s hurry back.”
On the way, Mu Nanhe briefly explained the situation. It turned out that the pregnant woman had been home alone when her water broke unexpectedly. In a panic to call for help, she bumped into the bed and fainted. Her husband only discovered her condition when he returned home at noon. After urgently calling the military doctor, the doctor informed them that her cervix was already four centimeters dilated and that her water had broken, but she remained unconscious. Given the long distance to the hospital and the urgency of the situation, they decided to call Yang Qingyan for assistance.
Yang Qingyan was filled with anxiety as she and Mu Nanhe rushed back to the family compound. As soon as they stepped into the courtyard, they saw a crowd gathered outside the house, chattering anxiously, the sound filled with helplessness.
Quickly regaining her composure, Yang Qingyan walked briskly toward the house, calling out, “Everyone, please move back so we can give the pregnant woman some space.” Hearing her, the crowd instinctively parted, allowing her to enter.
Upon entering the room, her gaze immediately fell on the pregnant woman lying on the bed. The woman’s complexion was as pale as paper, devoid of color. A large bump was conspicuously swollen on the right side of her forehead, a vivid bruise from where she had struck the bed in her panic. Beads of sweat rolled continuously down her forehead and cheeks, soaking the pillow, her hair disheveled and clinging to her face, clearly enduring immense pain. Looking lower, Yang Qingyan saw that the sheets were soaked; it was clear that this was the result of the broken water.
Without further hesitation, Yang Qingyan hurried to the bedside, gently placing her hand on the pregnancy woman’s wrist, holding her breath to check her pulse. Her brow furrowed slightly, her expression focused and serious. Time seemed to freeze at that moment, shutting out the surrounding noise; her mind and heart were solely focused on the pregnant woman and the fragile life within her.
After a detailed examination, Yang Qingyan’s heart sank. The situation was more dire than anticipated. While the woman’s cervix had already dilated to four centimeters, she remained unconscious, complicating matters greatly. Additionally, during the pulse check, Yang Qingyan had become aware that the woman suffered from congenital heart disease, making matters even worse. To make it worse, a quick check of the fetal heart indicated that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck.
Taking a deep breath, Yang Qingyan forced herself to remain calm. She glanced around and called out, “Who is the husband of the pregnant woman?”
“I am! I am!” Zhang Baoguo rushed forward, his voice trembling and eyes red, clearly frightened beyond words.
Yang Qingyan looked him in the eye, speaking quickly yet clearly, “Does your wife have a history of heart disease?”
Upon hearing this, tears overflowed from Zhang Baoguo’s eyes, cascading down his cheeks. He choked out, “Yes, she has had it since she was young. We were hesitant to have children because of it, but she was determined to give birth, saying she had to try… What should we do?”
Yang Qingyan nodded, “With her heart condition, we can’t perform a cesarean section.”
The military doctor beside them also appeared worried, interjecting helplessly, “But she’s still unconscious; natural delivery is impossible under these circumstances. This situation is too complicated.”
Yang Qingyan gritted her teeth, determination etched on her face as she declared, “It might be too late to send her to the military hospital now; it’s far away, and every second we delay increases the risk. I’ll try to wake her up first, as we need her consciousness to proceed.” Taking a deep breath, she subtly activated the powers within her.
Her hands slowly lifted to the woman’s forehead as she performed an energy channeling technique. Yang Qingyan closed her eyes, concentrating deeply, using her abilities to penetrate the woman’s chaotic unconscious mind, attempting to awaken her dormant senses.
Everyone held their breath, their eyes fixated on this scene, filled with anticipation for a miracle. Seconds dragged on, but suddenly the pregnant woman’s fingers twitched slightly. Yang Qingyan’s heart leaped with joy as she increased her energy output. Next, the woman’s eyelids fluttered, and a faint groan escaped her throat. “She’s waking up! She’s waking up!” Someone in the crowd couldn’t help but whisper in excitement.
Yang Qingyan did not let her guard down; she knew that this was only the first hurdle, and they still faced the severe umbilical cord problem.
“Sister-in-law, how are you feeling now?” Yang Qingyan aimed to keep her voice gentle and calm, soothing the pregnant woman’s anxiety.
Zeng’s sister-in-law, still weak, furrowed her brow and replied, “I feel a bit dizzy and my stomach hurts.”
Yang Qingyan nodded, her expression serious. “Sister-in-law, you’re already four centimeters dilated, and your water has broken. Since the umbilical cord is wrapped around your neck, I need you to cooperate and adjust your position. Are you able to do that?”
Zeng’s sister-in-law looked at Yang Qingyan with determination and desperation in her eyes, nodding without hesitation. “Please save my baby.”
Yang Qingyan turned to Zhang Baoguo and instructed, “You need to prepare her something to eat; she must regain her strength.” Zhang Baoguo nodded frantically, rushing out to prepare food.
Yang Qingyan took silver needles from her medical bag and expertly needled a few points on the pregnant woman’s head, aiming to alleviate her dizziness. Once Zeng’s sister-in-law felt somewhat better, Yang Qingyan and the military doctor carefully helped her to slowly rise, positioning her into a kneeling position to elevate the baby’s bottom.
Every second felt agonizingly slow; three minutes felt like an eternity. Beads of sweat covered Zeng’s sister-in-law’s forehead, and she gritted her teeth in pain. As contractions hit, she could no longer contain herself and cried out, “I can’t hold on any longer!”
Seeing her distress, Yang Qingyan hurriedly comforted her, “Sister-in-law, just hold on a bit longer! After the contraction, you’ll need to get up and walk a bit; this will help adjust the baby’s position. We will get through this together, and surely your baby will be born safely.” Her words were soft yet firm, providing strength.
Zeng’s sister-in-law gritted her teeth and nodded, her eyes reflecting trust in Yang Qingyan and a hopeful longing for her child.
Before long, Zhang Baoguo rushed back in, holding a steaming bowl of food, his hands trembling as he spoon-fed Zeng’s sister-in-law.
Despite her discomfort, Zeng’s sister-in-law forced herself to eat a few bites. Just as she swallowed the last bit, a new wave of contractions surged through her, hitting her like a violent tide. Her face turned pale, and she clutched Zhang Baoguo’s hand tightly, her knuckles turning white from the pressure. Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead, and her lips were bitten raw, yet she remained silent, struggling through the pain.
As the contraction passed, Yang Qingyan quickly approached, gently brushing aside the damp hair sticking to the woman’s forehead. “Sister-in-law, just one more moment. I’ll check to see how things are progressing.”
With that, she donned gloves and carefully examined the cervix. After a moment, she lifted her head with a glimmer of relief in her eyes. “Sister-in-law, you’re six centimeters dilated now! It’s nearly time, but the umbilical cord is still wrapped around the neck; we need to use the same method as before. We can definitely do this.” Her words acted like a shot of adrenaline, calming Zeng’s sister-in-law’s earlier panic somewhat.
However, deep down, Yang Qingyan understood that the pregnant woman’s condition had grown extremely weak, and the baby’s situation was far from optimistic. With every passing moment, the danger multiplied.
