Chapter 16
The car was driving fast on the road. Jiang Yan looked at the scene outside the window, but there was no surprise in her eyes.
The train route is mostly surrounded by barren mountains and wilderness, but the roads connect cities and settlements, which reflect the true situation of a country and its people.
After coming out of the station, Jiang Yan kept paying attention to the surrounding scenery.
She had only one feeling.
That’s poverty.
And the farther away from the train station, the more obvious this feeling is.
If she hadn’t clearly known that she had traveled back to the 1970s, she would have thought she had arrived in some impoverished mountainous area.
In the farmlands along the way, many farmers were digging in the fields, some were working hard, while others were just being lazy. There were almost no groups of children laughing on the ridges as imagined, as they were also doing what they could.
When people hear the sound of a car, they will look up curiously.
What Jiang Yan saw were people with pale faces, thin bodies, ragged clothes, and patches on their bodies. There was not a single fat person.
Although the conditions are difficult, people’s spirits are good.
Seeing that his young wife didn’t say anything after getting on the car, Lu Yunsheng asked, “Why don’t you say anything? Are you carsick?”
Jiang Yan shook her head, looked at Lu Yunsheng curiously and asked, “Is our home far from the sea? I haven’t seen the sea yet.”
Glancing at Jiang Yan from the corner of his eye, Lu Yunsheng replied, “Not far. You can get there in half an hour at your walking pace.”
Jiang Yan nodded.
In this way, she can go fishing at the beach when she has time to improve her life. She signed in for a bag of fish bait yesterday, so she should be able to catch some fish.
She continued, “You are a sailor, so you should be on the ship a lot, right? How often can you go home?”
Lu Yunsheng smiled and said, “We are the Marines. We don’t need to stay on the ship for a long time. If it is daily training, we should be able to go home every day.”
“Will you come back for dinner later? My cooking is delicious.”
Having inherited the original owner’s cooking skills, Jiang Yan has acquired some impressive skills, which makes her a little proud.
Seeing his young wife’s proud look, Lu Yunsheng couldn’t help laughing, “If you’re not tired, I’ll come back to eat. If you’re too busy, you can eat in the army.”
“The troops have one day off a week, and we can cook together then.”
“OK.”
Jiang Yan nodded repeatedly and then yawned.
“If you’re tired, just lean back and take a nap. It’ll be a while before we get home.”
Jiang Yan reclined the seat slightly and fell asleep leaning against it. The chair on the train was too straight and she had always been slept uneasily, but this time she fell asleep quickly.
When she woke up, the car had already entered the family compound and stopped outside a small courtyard surrounded by red bricks.
Lu Yunsheng smiled and said, “You’re awake. Come on, I’ll show you our home.”
There is a small courtyard of over 100 square meters at the entrance. The courtyard is empty and the ground is covered with dry and yellow weeds that have been cleared.
Opposite the yard is an 80-square-meter brick house with a living room in the middle, the master bedroom and second bedroom on the left, and the kitchen and toilet on the right. The conditions are quite good.
The living room was very empty, with only a square wooden table and two stools, and nothing else.
Although there is nothing in the house and it looks empty and lacks life, it is very clean.
Lu Yunsheng also knew that the room was a bit simple, so he quickly took his young wife into the master bedroom.
The master bedroom is relatively better, but only slightly better.
The master bedroom has a single bed, a desk and a small wardrobe, and nothing else, not even a curtain.
This is the minimalist style of the era.
It didn’t matter when he was alone, but now that he had a young wife, Lu Yunsheng felt that his room was only slightly better than a doghouse.
He quickly explained: “I’m basically in the army and rarely come back, so I didn’t buy any furniture.”
Jiang Yan understood.
Being promoted to battalion commander at the age of 25, Lu Yunsheng must be very busy.
She looked at Lu Yunsheng and said, “Put your things here. I’ll clean them up. Do you have time tomorrow? I want to go to the city to buy some things. If there’s a place nearby where I can buy them, that’s fine.”
“You have to go to the city to buy furniture. There is a small town near us. You can go to the supply and marketing cooperative there to buy daily necessities. It only takes more than ten minutes to drive there.”
Jiang Yan looked at the sky and decided not to go today and go early tomorrow morning.
Putting the bag on the small desk, Jiang Yan said to Lu Yunsheng, “Are you going to return your car today? If so, go quickly. Has there been a fire at home?”
Lu Yunsheng nodded and answered Jiang Yan’s questions one by one.
“You have to return it, but we haven’t cooked at home. I’ll bring it back from the cafeteria later. If you’re hungry, have a snack first. I’ll be back in about half an hour, or an hour at most.”
“Okay, go ahead.”
Lu Yunsheng left with the lunch box. Jiang Yan walked to the closet, opened the door and saw that Lu Yunsheng’s clothes were neatly stacked inside. They were all military uniforms, except for one set of casual clothes, which was pressed at the bottom.
There are three compartments in the wardrobe. Lu Yunsheng’s clothes are in the middle, and the top and bottom compartments are still empty.
Jiang Yan moved a stool from the living room, folded her clothes and placed them in the upper compartment, and placed the malted milk and other things she brought at the bottom, but left some milk candies and fruit candies in the space.
She had just arrived at the compound and would definitely have to deal with other military wives in the future, so using candy to get close to them was a good choice.
After putting the things away, Jiang Yan walked around the house.
She is very satisfied with her living conditions.
In this era, having a small brick courtyard is quite a good thing, especially when the courtyard is so big.
She could grow some vegetables so she doesn’t have to buy them.
Now that I can’t do business, my income is basically nothing except the allowance from Lu Yunsheng.
So she had to save a little so that she could save up her first pot of gold.
I hope I can sign for some fertilizers and good quality seeds in the future so that she can harvest more vegetables.
She had to raise Lu Yunsheng to be strong. Only with a good body could he advance in his career. Then her cheap husband would be promoted and she would become rich, and the couple would have power and money.
Life is simply wonderful.
After simply planning the courtyard, Jiang Yan walked into the kitchen and took a look.
The kitchen was very clean, and there was nothing in it except a teapot for boiling water, not even chopsticks or bowls.
“Captain Lu is at home?”
Hearing a sound outside the yard, she hurried out to check the situation.
I saw a woman with a pigtail and a bamboo basket in her hand standing at the gate of the courtyard looking inside.
Seeing a fairy-like girl coming out of the kitchen, with a surprised expression on her face, she hurriedly asked, “Sister, who are you? Captain Lu’s sister?”
Jiang Yan smiled and shook her head, walking towards the door while explaining, “My name is Jiang Yan, and I’m Lu Yunsheng’s fiancée. We’ll go get the marriage certificate once the marriage application is approved.”
“What?”
The woman looked shocked, as if she had heard something incredible. She stared at Jiang Yan for several times and whispered, “Sister Jiang Yan, I’m not calling you a gossip girl, but do you know about Captain Lu’s situation?”
This sister-in-law is quite kind.
Jiang Yan smiled again, “I know, I don’t mind.”
“That’s fine, that’s fine.” The woman felt relieved. “As long as you don’t mind, Captain Lu is a good choice. He is already a battalion commander at such a young age. He will definitely be able to make further progress in the future. Your good days are still ahead.”
“Oh, by the way, my name is He Hongxiu, and my husband is the political commissar of our regiment. If you have any problems in the future, you can come to me directly.”
“We military wives should unite and love each other and stabilize the rear areas, so that their men can defend their country with peace of mind.”
“Thank you, sister-in-law.”
Jiang Yan took out a handful of candies from her pocket and put them into He Hongxiu’s bamboo basket.
