Chapter 168: Uncle has a high Fever
The others saw what Su Yin was doing and didn’t need any instructions.
One by one, they pulled out mugwort from their luggage, mimicking Su Yin, and lit it on fire.
Some held it in their hands, while others tied it to the edge of the carriage with ropes.
The scent of burning mugwort immediately filled the air and lingered around them.
The smell of cigarette smoke, once suffocating, was now something everyone wished they could have around them.
The other refugees watched their group’s actions with confusion, but they didn’t say anything. At most, they looked at them with dissatisfaction.
“What are you smoking?” A medium-pitched voice came from the fleeing team on one side.
Su Yin ignored it.
The voice spoke again, shouting directly at Su Yin with dissatisfaction: “Hey, little maid, what are those things you ordered?
They’re killing people. Get rid of those things quickly.”
Su Yin turned to look at the speaker. It was a woman, well-maintained even in the midst of the fleeing team, always maintaining a good posture.
Needless to say, the woman in front of her must have been either rich or noble.
When Su Yin looked at her, the woman frowned in displeasure at being ignored, “Little maid, are you deaf and can’t hear people talking?”
Su Baozhu, who was sitting in the carriage, directly opened the curtain and said, “Who are you calling deaf?!
If your tongue is hot and you can’t speak, then shut your mouth.”
The woman was stunned by the sudden roar.
“You, you, you are so vulgar.”
“Vulgar? I think you are a cheap maid.” Su Baozhu immediately replied.
“You, you, you…” The woman was very angry.
Without even having to take action, my sister-in-law had already silenced the opponent.
Su Yin’s eyes calmly passed over the woman, without saying a word to her the whole time, and turned back indifferently.
Perhaps the way Su Yin treated her like nothing the whole time added fuel to the fire, making the woman fall back in anger.
“Madam, madam.”
Su Yin ignored them and intentionally quickened her pace, not wanting to have too much contact with them.
The people behind her felt the team’s speed and each of them tacitly sped up their pace.
The team passed group after group of refugees.
Noon was the hottest time of the day. In the past, I would have found a place to rest.
Not only did people need to rest, but animals like horses also needed to rest.
But today, Su Yin didn’t let the team stop, instead pushing forward faster.
They had to reach Linzhi County as soon as possible.
They started at half past Yin time (4:00 AM) every day and wouldn’t stop until half past Xu time (8:00 PM).
They only had time for a cup of tea at noon, and rushed all the way.
To ensure rest, Su Yin didn’t let Su’s mother cook these days. She boiled some hot water every day and drank it with a mouthful of pancakes.
During the day, Su Yin would cut off a few pieces of wild boar meat and chew it dry to avoid consuming too much of the body’s energy.
When night fell, everything was silent.
The fire burned and made a crackling sound.
Su Baozhu asked Wan Sanye, “Fat Master, how long will it take to get to Linzhi County?”
The two days of traveling were really tiring.
Even in a carriage, it was unbearable.
Mr. Wan San was chewing dried meat in his mouth, “If we keep going at the pace of the past two days, we’ll probably be there tomorrow.”
“That’s not far.”
It could be reached in two hours’ walk.
“It’s not far.”
They chose a place to camp, deliberately far away from other refugees.
At this moment, Li Rui hurried over with a solemn expression.
Su Baozhu and Wan Sanye, who were chatting, immediately stopped.
Su Yin stood up and said, “What happened?”
Li Rui said with a hint of panic in his voice, “My uncle has a high fever.”
Having a high fever at this juncture was not a good thing.
“Let’s go.”
The two hurriedly found Dr. Li.
When Doctor Li saw their expressions, his heart sank. He picked up the simple homemade medicine box and followed the two of them away.
“Mom, my father and sister look so scary.”
The little guy seemed to feel the solemn atmosphere among the adults, and crawled into the fisherman’s arms in fear.
The fisherman hugged her son tightly, “Don’t be afraid, everything will be fine as long as daddy is here.”
Although she said this, she could not hide the worry in her eyes.
If it was true…
She didn’t dare to think about it anymore.
The three of them all put on masks and hurried to the place where Uncle Li Rui and his family were resting.
Su Yin saw that several members of the family were not wearing masks, and frowned, “You all go to the side and put on masks.”
As soon as she spoke, Uncle Li Rui and his family didn’t say a word. They put on their masks in a panic and moved to the side.
Li Rui’s aunt wanted to come forward, but Li Rui blocked her.
“Auntie, please wait in the distance. Let’s take a look first.”
The aunt’s eyes were red with anxiety. “He was fine during the day, but now he has a high fever.”
Li Rui’s cousin hurriedly pulled her away. “Mom, please don’t cause trouble for Su Yin. As long as Dr. Li is here, dad will be fine.”
Uncle Li Rui’s family was very frightened.
If their father/father-in-law was really infected, they might also be infected.
It felt like there was a knife hanging over their heads, ready to fall at any time and leave their heads in different places.
Nan Qi walked up to Nan Jingzhi and said in a low voice, “Young Master, something happened at Li Rui’s side.”
Nan Jingzhi straightened up and motioned for him to continue.
“Li Rui’s uncle has a high fever. Now Miss Su is taking Dr. Li over.”
Nan Jingzhi stood up, raised his feet and was about to walk that way, but stopped as soon as he took a step.
“You should always pay attention to what’s going on over there. If there is any situation, report it in time.”
“Yes.”
Nan Jingzhi turned his head and looked at Nan Liu, “Go and check the other people in the team to see if anyone is feeling unwell.”
Nan Liu understood the urgency of the situation and immediately got up to handle it.
Beside the fire, Li Rui’s uncle was leaning against a tree trunk. In the firelight, it was clear to see the sweat dripping from his forehead.
He looked weak and half-squinted, lacking the energy to talk to others.
This symptom was a bit worrying.
Dr. Li checked his pulse, his brow furrowing deeper. “Open your mouth.”
Uncle Li Rui opened his mouth weakly, as if it was a struggle just to do so.
After observing the coating on his tongue, and not waiting for Doctor Li to speak, Li Rui asked anxiously, “How is it?”
“Let’s go aside and talk.”
The three of them moved to a quieter spot.
“Doctor Li, is my uncle infected with the plague?” Li Rui asked, worry etched on his face.
They had finally made it here, and with hope just within reach, the thought of a terrible plague breaking out in the team was frightening. It would be impossible for anyone to survive.
Doctor Li looked solemn and shook his head.
“It’s not a plague?” Li Rui felt a flicker of relief.
Doctor Li continued to shake his head.
“Don’t say anything yet. Listen to Doctor Li first,” Su Yin promptly interrupted, sensing Li Rui was about to speak again.
