Chapter 48: Something happened in the city
Yang Dahe rushed to the bunkhouse next door and banged on the door, waking everyone in the room.
Someone cursed and opened the door, “Why are you making noise in the middle of the night?”
Yang Dahe ignored the other person’s attitude, looked serious, and quickly said, “There is a group of people in the city who are burning, killing, and robbing, and they will rush here soon.”
“What are you talking about? How could something like this happen?” The man didn’t believe it.
Another person who followed him out looked up at the sky above the south and west of the city.
The fire illuminating the night sky and the vague sounds made his heart tighten, and his face gradually turned pale with fear.
“What he said is true.”
The cursing man turned his head and looked up in the direction the other person was pointing. At this glance, his blood ran cold.
“Fuck!”
Yang Dahe ignored their shock and moved on to the next room.
At the same time, Su Yin found the house where the store owner lived, which was in the backyard.
She climbed over the wall and knocked on the door of the main house.
The lights came on in the house.
“Who?”
“Shopkeeper, something big happened in the city, come out quickly.”
The foot shop owner heard Su Yin’s voice, hurriedly put on his clothes, and looked at the unexpected visitor with a wary expression. Soon, he heard the commotion in the front yard.
“Shopkeeper, look over there.”
Su Yin pointed towards the south and west of the city. The fires on both sides were getting brighter, indicating that the tragedy there was affecting more and more people.
The owner of the foot shop was a knowledgeable man. Looking at the illuminated sky over there, a heavy sense of dread filled his heart.
“For some reason, a group of people appeared in the city and are burning, killing, and looting.
They are currently in the south and west of the city, but it won’t be long before it spreads to the east and north. We have to make plans early.”
The owner of the foot shop, noticing Su Yin’s calmness, realized that despite her young age, she was composed even in such a dire situation.
This indicated she was someone capable of handling significant challenges. He might not have much ability himself, but he was very perceptive.
“Girl, what are you going to do?” he asked.
“Gather everyone in the store together and resist together; then there will be a chance of survival.”
“Okay.”
“I need you to provide some items to resist those gangsters.”
“Okay.”
“Shopkeeper, please quickly gather all the staff and have them meet in the front yard.”
“Okay.”
Su Yin walked out of the backyard through the front door this time.
Oil lamps were lit in the inn, and everyone gathered in the open space in the front yard, fear and unease visible on their faces.
When Butcher Yang saw Su Yin, he seemed to have found a backbone and subconsciously asked, “Girl Su, what should we do now?”
Before Su Yin could respond, Mrs. Zhang howled, “Oh, this is a mistake! What a sin!
We spent all this money only to be slaughtered by others. If we were outside the city, what should we do now?”
The old lady’s lament made Yang Dashan’s face turn ugly.
Yang Shuixian noticed her father’s expression and hurriedly stepped forward to hold her mother-in-law, saying, “Mother-in-law, now is not the time to cry. Please stop talking and listen to what my cousin has to say first.”
“What’s there to say about a little girl like her?” Mrs. Zhang retorted, her displeasure evident.
Old Man Zhang noticed the worried faces of the people from Xinghua Village and immediately scolded his wife, “Shut up! What time is it now? Why are you yelling?
Let’s listen to what Su Yatou has to say first. She has many ideas and might be able to come up with a good plan. Fazi, please don’t cause trouble here.”
“Mom, just be quiet for a while,” Zhang Liangtian advised.
Even if Mrs. Zhang was reluctant, she fell silent.
Only then did Su Yin have the opportunity to speak. “Now our only way is to unite everyone to resist the bandits’ looting.
As long as we keep the store, our property and lives will be protected.”
A passenger spoke up, “But how can we resist those vicious gangsters?”
Another person chimed in, “It’s better to find a place to hide before the gangsters come.”
Butcher Yang retorted, “Hide? Where are you going to hide? When those people come, they will definitely search for you.
Once they find you, you will only die. You might as well resist them like Su Yatou suggested.”
The hot-tempered passenger from before said, “Why don’t we take advantage of this moment to open the city gate and escape?”
This proposal garnered approval from many people, and several looked visibly moved.
However, Su Yin’s words successfully shattered their unrealistic illusions. “You have such a beautiful idea, but this group of gangsters are definitely not foolhardy if they can sneak into the city so easily.
An important place like the city gate must be guarded. How could you escape so easily?”
“If this is true, their efforts will be in vain. If you leave the city now, you will be walking into a trap.”
Her words dispelled many people’s thoughts, but some still remained skeptical or simply refused to believe what Su Yin was saying.
This was understandable. They had never had any prior contact with Su Yin, and seeing that she was just a girl of fourteen or fifteen years old, her words were naturally not too convincing.
“This is all your guess. You want us to stay and resist the gangsters. If you want to resist, I have to leave.” The speaker was a young man who looked like he was studying.
The hot-tempered tourists followed closely behind, “Humph, I won’t play this kind of house game with you.”
Then, one after another, tourists left the shop, preparing to escape from the city.
Yang Dashu wanted to stop them, but these people didn’t listen and instead sneered.
“Dashu, leave them alone. If they want to leave, let them go,” Yang Dachuan said.
Some passengers left, but some who had women and children did not.
Su Yin looked at everyone left behind, “It’s very chaotic outside now, and you never know when you will encounter gangsters.
These vicious people will never let anyone go easily. We are in the east of the city, and we are in a foot shop.”
“The gangsters come here to seek money. Foot shops are not their main target, but places like inns and brothels are.
There won’t be too many people coming to our place. So as long as we resist them, we everyone can survive and protect their property.”
These words gave the anxious people a little confidence.
“Whether we can resist the gangsters next depends on whether we can work together.”
The foot shop owner was the first to express his stance, “Girl, we will cooperate with you no matter what you want us to do.”
“Yes, that’s what you say, we all listen to you,” Butcher Yang echoed.
“Tell me what we are going to do.”
Su Yin looked at the foot shop owner, “Shopkeeper, is there a lot of oil in the shop?”
“There is a big can, which I just bought recently.”
“Are there any soybeans?”
“Yes.”
Su Yin reported what she needed one by one, and most stores had it.
Su Yin began to give instructions, “You guys block all the things in the store that can withstand the front and back doors.
You guys, put all the oil into small bamboo tubes…”
