Chapter 106: Exposing the Scumbag
Miss Mo Er left in a daze after hearing Du Wanchun’s words. Fortunately, she did not make things difficult for Zhang Qiuhe.
Inside the Mo residence, Liu Shengyuan was still lying on the bed, groaning in pain. Several doctors had already been called in.
“Why is his face still swollen?” General Mo asked anxiously.
General Mo was already past fifty. Although his official position was not as high as General Han’s in the capital, he was still highly respected in the military. Even though his hair had turned white, he continued to guard the border alongside his daughter and son-in-law.
He had originally taken a liking to this son-in-law, despite his humble farming background—after all, his daughter liked him.
The doctor carefully examined Liu Shengyuan’s wounds, furrowing his brows in confusion. “This isn’t right. I applied medicine to Second Son-in-law’s injuries last night. Even if the swelling didn’t subside today, it shouldn’t have worsened!”
Liu Shengyuan’s face had initially swollen like a pig’s head, but now, the wounds were beginning to fester, making for a sickening sight.
General Mo stroked his beard. “Is there a cure? If not, call more doctors!”
The other doctors standing nearby quickly responded, “General, we’ve all examined Second Son-in-law’s injuries and applied the necessary medicine. If he doesn’t recover, it can only be attributed to bad luck.”
General Mo’s face darkened with anger. “What do you mean by ‘bad luck’?”
The doctors took a step back and lowered their voices. “It means he was stung by a venomous bee—far more poisonous than ordinary wasps. In such cases, we can only leave it to fate. If he’s lucky, the swelling will go down in a few days. If not, the infection may worsen, and his wounds could continue to fester.”
“It could get even worse?!” Liu Shengyuan, who had been lying on the bed, was so horrified that he lifted his head, his eyes filled with fear. “Does that mean my face will be ruined?”
The doctor, showing no mercy, bluntly replied, “Losing your looks is a minor issue. The real concern is that you might lose your life.”
Liu Shengyuan could no longer keep his composure. He scrambled off the bed in a panic. “Doctor, you have to save me! I can’t die like this!”
Of course, he couldn’t die now—he had just become General Mo’s esteemed son-in-law. He was still looking forward to traveling to the capital with General Mo, securing an official position, and living the high life.
The doctor instinctively took two steps back. “Second Son-in-law, you mustn’t act recklessly!”
General Mo quickly signaled to the servants, who hurried to support Liu Shengyuan and place him back on the bed.
Now that he had heard he might not survive, Liu Shengyuan completely lost his spirit. He sat there like a withered eggplant, staring blankly ahead, even forgetting the pain for a moment.
General Mo stood nearby, watching with a furrowed brow. He had once thought this son-in-law of his was at least brave, but after witnessing his cowardly behavior just now, he couldn’t help but feel a trace of disappointment.
At that moment, Miss Mo Er returned.
Her face was pale, and her eyes were lifeless.
General Mo assumed she was worried about Liu Shengyuan’s injuries and quickly comforted her, saying, “Qingyu, don’t worry. I will make sure to find the best doctor to treat Han Sheng’s wounds.”
Miss Mo Er slowly walked forward until she reached Liu Shengyuan’s bedside. Her voice was cold as she asked, “Who is Zhang Qiuhe?”
Liu Shengyuan was stunned. He lifted his already distraught face, and after a brief moment of shock, he quickly put on an innocent expression and said, “Wife, what’s wrong? Who is this person you’re talking about?”
Seeing the flicker of guilt in his eyes, Miss Mo Er was startled. The corner of her lips curled into a bitter smile as she said, “I just met her.”
Liu Shengyuan was taken aback again. In his mind, he was certain that by now, she and that child should have already died in that rundown house. How could she have met Mo Qingyu?
Miss Mo Er was not a woman of good temper. She strode forward and grabbed his collar, her voice ice-cold. “She said you are her husband. She even gave birth to a son for you. And yet, you tried to kill both mother and child.”
Liu Shengyuan’s eyes widened in shock, his eyeballs nearly popping out of their sockets. He froze for a moment before quickly saying, “Wife, she’s lying! I don’t even know her! She’s just trying to blackmail us for money!”
Miss Mo Er let out a cold sneer. “Liu Shengyuan, you’d better tell me the truth. Don’t take me for a fool.”
Liu Shengyuan flinched at the sound of his full name, but he still stubbornly refused to admit it. “Wife, I swear I haven’t lied to you. In this lifetime, you are the only woman I have ever married.”
Seeing that he remained unyielding, Miss Mo Er slowly let go of him, forcing herself to calm down. “You say you haven’t lied to me, but she told me you poisoned them. You nearly killed both mother and son.”
Liu Shengyuan hurriedly explained in a panic, “Wife, that day, I only bought some pastries. If you don’t believe me, you can go ask the pastry shop. I only bought one portion—the one I gave to you.”
He had indeed bought two portions—one he purchased himself and the other he had someone else buy on his behalf.
However, Miss Mo Er didn’t believe a single word he said. She yanked his collar again and said coldly, “How did you know the poisoned item was the pastries? I never mentioned that since I walked in.”
