Chapter 71: New Magical Fragrance is Made
Zhou Da-niang could hear the commotion even from her doorstep. She quickly turned to Du Wanchun behind her and asked, “Wanchun, did you just hear something?”
Du Wanchun perked up her ears and listened carefully. “Mother, it seems to be coming from the Meng family’s place.”
As she spoke, she pointed in the direction of the Meng household.
Zhou Da-niang looked up and saw that many villagers were running in that direction. “Did something major happen at the Meng house?”
Just as she was muttering to herself, Auntie Wang walked over and said, “Sister Zhou, something big has happened at the Meng household!”
Auntie Wang glanced toward the Meng family’s house and continued, “I was just passing by and happened to see it. That old Meng geezer wanted to take a concubine—the widow Jiang from the neighboring village. His wife refused, and after a heated argument, she completely crippled him.”
As she spoke, she made a scissor-like gesture with her right hand and winked at Zhou Da-niang.
Zhou Da-niang gasped in shock, covering her mouth and widening her eyes. “Really?”
Auntie Wang nodded and lowered her voice. “It’s true. I saw blood all over the ground when I passed by. Now, Old Meng has been taken to Doctor Xu. Before long, the authorities might come.”
Zhou Da-niang sighed. “I never imagined Meng Auntie was this fierce.”
Auntie Wang scoffed in the direction of the Meng household. “That old Meng fool deserved it! He used to have his eyes on you, too, as if he wasn’t already ancient. I think Meng Auntie did the right thing—he should’ve been dealt with long ago. Let’s see if he dares to misbehave now.”
Zhou Da-niang chuckled. “This might actually be a good thing. At least now they won’t have the energy to cause trouble for us anymore. I doubt they’ll be in the mood to go against us after this.”
Auntie Wang withdrew her gaze and grinned. “Exactly.”
Du Wanchun listened to their lively conversation from the side, unable to hold back her laughter as well.
Auntie Wang then noticed the smoke rising from behind the old house and asked, “Sister Zhou, are you still making scented dew?”
Zhou Da-niang nodded with a smile. “Yes, Feng’er’s shop needs several bottles every month. I have to finish making next month’s supply before the month is over.”
At that moment, Du Wanchun took out the freshly made peppermint-scented dew and handed it to Auntie Wang. “Auntie Wang, take a look. This is our new scented dew. It’s mainly used to refresh the mind and prevent mosquito bites.”
Auntie Wang was delighted. She immediately took the bottle, opened it, and saw that the liquid inside was a vibrant green—completely different from the previous rose-scented dew, which was transparent.
Zhou Da-niang explained from the side, “I added quite a few medicinal herbs to it. Take a look—what do you think?”
Auntie Wang brought the bottle to her nose and sniffed. Instantly, a cool sensation rushed to her head, making her feel extraordinarily refreshed. “This scent is really something special!”
Du Wanchun explained, “The scent is quite strong, but if you apply it to mosquito bites, it can quickly relieve itching.”
“Really?” Auntie Wang was surprised. She had never seen such a useful product before.
Du Wanchun poured a little onto her hand. “Auntie, you can try it yourself.”
Half-skeptical, Auntie Wang applied the peppermint-scented dew to the red, swollen area on her arm where she had been bitten by a bug. “I don’t know what bit me in the fields yesterday, but it’s been itching terribly. Let’s see if this works.”
Saying that, she gently spread the liquid over her skin.
Du Wanchun and Zhou Da-niang watched quietly from the side.
A moment later, Auntie Wang’s expression turned to one of astonishment. She shook her arm excitedly and exclaimed, “Oh my! It really doesn’t itch anymore! It feels so cool and soothing.”
Du Wanchun and Zhou Da-niang exchanged smiles, their faces lighting up with joy.
Auntie Wang looked at the scented dew in her hand as if it were a treasure, grinning from ear to ear. “Sister Zhou, this stuff is amazing! When summer comes, with this around, we won’t have to worry about mosquito bites anymore.”
Zhou Da-niang beamed with satisfaction. “I just followed Wanchun’s idea and wanted to give it a try. I didn’t expect it to actually work.”
Auntie Wang handed the bottle back to her. “If you sell this, I’m sure people will buy it. The only question is, how much should it cost?”
Du Wanchun smiled and asked, “Auntie, if it were you, how much silver would you be willing to pay for it?”
