Chen Feng entered the west room and saw Mrs. Ding striking Mrs. Wang with the long pipe. She rushed over and pushed Mrs. Ding away, scolding, “Old hag, how dare you hit my mother? Believe me, I’ll beat you to death.”
Mrs. Wang suddenly remembered that her daughter had been hiding in the east room the whole time. She had forgotten in her agitation. Terrified, she quickly pushed Chen Feng outside, saying, “A’Feng, get out, everything is fine.”
“Stop!” Mrs. Ding bellowed. She stared at Chen Feng, first with disbelief, then burst into loud laughter. She muttered to herself, “Goodness, they say honest people achieve great things, and it’s true.”
Seeing her mother act this way, Wang Cai was frightened and hastily asked, “Mother, what’s wrong with you?”
Ignoring Wang Cai, Mrs. Ding looked at Mrs. Wang with a sly smile and said, “Oh, Wang Juan, I always thought you were a simpleton, but it turns out you’re a crafty one. You actually dared to deceive me, no, you’ve deceived so many people…”
Mrs. Wang shook her head in denial, “I didn’t deceive anyone, I didn’t deceive anyone…” She pushed Chen Feng out forcefully, “A’Feng, go out, this is my business, you shouldn’t get involved.”
Chen Feng stood still, and Mrs. Wang couldn’t push her out.
Mrs. Ding sat back on the heated brick bed, her face immediately becoming kind. She spoke softly, “Juan, good child, honestly tell your mother, when you were driven out of the Chen household, had you already had a child?” She then pointed at Chen Feng, “This idiot… no, this child looks exactly like when Mr. Chen was young. Is she Mr. Chen’s child?”
Tears streamed down Mrs. Wang’s face as she shook her head vigorously, murmuring, “Don’t talk nonsense. A’Feng is my rightful child. If you don’t believe me, ask my husband when he comes back.”
Mrs. Ding chuckled and said, “Juan, neither of us is a fool. With A’Feng’s extraordinary look and talent, she couldn’t possibly have been born to that sickly Chen Ming…”
“You’re talking nonsense, it’s not true.” Mrs. Wang repeated, her body trembling.
Chen Feng gently held Mrs. Wang and said, “Mother, don’t be upset. I know, I am my father’s biological daughter.”
Wang Cai also understood now. He carefully looked at Chen Feng and indeed saw a striking resemblance to Chen Shiying from many years ago. At that time, he was still a child, and when Chen Shiying came to their home to find Mrs. Wang, he had seen him once.
His eyes immediately lit up. He grinned and said, “Big sister, you’re amazing. You’ve quietly found a way to entangle Mr. Chen… If our mother had known at the time that you were pregnant, she would have helped you seek justice from the Chen family instead of rushing to marry you off to the sickly Chen Ming. Even if you had become a concubine to Mr. Chen, you and our mother wouldn’t have lacked for anything.”
Mrs. Ding added, “Yes, if mother had known the truth, she would have helped you. But knowing now is not too late. Good girl, take A’Feng and come back home with me. Mother is willing to swallow her pride and go to the Chen family to plead with Mr. Chen to take you and your daughter back to the Chen residence. They wouldn’t bear to abandon their own flesh and blood. You don’t know, Mr. Chen holds tight to his affections. He even came to our home looking for you, but unfortunately, you had already married.”
Mrs. Wang was trembling with anger and tears streaming down her face as she said, “Stop talking nonsense, A’Feng is my husband’s legitimate child. You’ve bullied me and my brother, but you won’t bully my A’Feng. Leave, leave, both of you leave…”
Wang Cai smirked and said, “Big sister, don’t be stubborn. Your good days are here. Even if you go to the Chen household as a concubine, you’ll be in a fortunate position. If you really don’t want to go back, bring out a hundred taels of silver…”
Before he could finish, Chen Feng angrily retorted, “Enough of your nonsense. If you’re so fond of concubines, why don’t you let your old hag of a mother become one…”
As she spoke, she struck him on the shoulder.
Wang Cai let out a yelp and tried to lunge at Chen Feng, but a strong force pulled him back, causing him to fall to the ground. A robust gray and white dog extended its tongue and began playfully biting and nipping at him, causing him to cry out in fear.
Ever since being in the east room, Zhui Feng had been unable to contain its urge to bite someone, restrained by Chen Feng. It had been waiting for an opportunity by the door and, seeing its owner about to be hit, it pounced on the intruder.
Zhui Feng had grown strong and muscular, and Wang Cai, a small and slender figure, was no match for the dog.
Chen Feng held back Mrs. Ding and told Zhui Feng, “Don’t bite his neck or face.”
She couldn’t let the dog kill him, nor leave him with severe injuries. No matter how bad he was, he was still considered an elder.
Wang Cai struggled to get up, but Zhui Feng continued to pounce, press, and bite, preventing him from getting back on his feet. In the struggle, he knocked over tables and chairs, and a table hit his leg, causing him pain and fright. He instinctively used his arms to protect his face as he cried out in distress.
Mrs. Ding was terrified and cried out as she tried to rush to rescue her son.
Chen Feng had no trouble handling this elderly woman. She grabbed Mrs. Ding’s clothes at the chest with one hand and yanked her hair back with the other, forcing her face to meet her own.
The old, pale face was stained with tears and mucus, and a long scar ran from the corner of her right eye to her ear, which filled Chen Feng with disgust.
Despite her repulsion, she had to make this repugnant face meet her own. Gritting her teeth and glaring, she cursed, word by word, “You are the despicable wretch. You sold my mother twice, yet you have the audacity to demand money, and you even want to sell my mother a third time. You wretched old hag, you’ve done so much evil, why hasn’t heaven punished you? I warn you, if you dare to come to my house and bully my mother again, I will let Zhui Feng bite you to death. Let me make it clear, I, Chen Feng, am the legitimate daughter of my father, Chen Ming. Every villager in Xiangluo Village can testify to this. If you dare to spew lies and link me to Chen Shiying, not only will I not spare you, but Chen Shiying will not spare you either. He is now a magistrate, and if he finds out that you falsely claim that he has a daughter outside, tarnishing his reputation, he will surely send someone to exterminate your entire family…”
Mrs. Ding was terrified and pleaded, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, please let go of my son…”
When she heard that Mr. Chen would send someone to exterminate them, she became even more frightened. She looked at Chen Feng, her eyes wide, as if she were facing the wrath of Chen Shiying, and she even wet herself in fear.
Chen Feng wrinkled her nose at the smell of urine. She wished she could disfigure that face, but she knew she couldn’t. This wicked woman wasn’t worth tarnishing her own reputation. In ancient times, being unfilial was a serious offense. No matter how bad the elder, the younger generation couldn’t resort to physical violence.
Evil people would face their retribution!
Chen Feng dragged Mrs. Ding out of the west room and gave her a push forward. Mrs. Ding’s body went limp and she sat down, as if she were a pile of soft mud.
