Can this little thing really transform into a living creature? Chen Feng held the golden amber in her hand and examined it carefully. Suddenly, she thought she saw its tiny black eyes move, which startled her. Upon closer inspection, she realized it hadn’t moved at all.
I must be experiencing pregnancy brain! She chuckled at herself.
Feeling that it was about time, and having rested well, she emerged from her inner space.
She instructed the children to return to Tangyuan for lunch and rest in the backyard, planning to see them again later in the afternoon.
It was the busy spring season, so Chen Feng delegated many tasks related to the accompanying dowry estate to Xue Dagui for coordination. Both Wangshan Village and Tangyuan were preparing to plant a hundred mu of watermelons, with Chen Ming and the main house allocated ten mu each. Wang Cheng had bought twenty mu of land, and Chen Feng had given him seeds for ten mu.
These seeds were leftover from the last batch of sweet melons. Chen Feng had simply soaked them in water before planting, without treating them in her inner space, to see if the flavor would change.
Instructions regarding harvesting rapeseed, winter wheat, and rice seedling cultivation were all clear, allowing her to focus on other tasks.
On the morning of the seventh of March, after calculating that it had been forty-two days, Mama Li believed the physician should be able to clearly feel her pulse. She mentioned to summon a doctor from the county town to examine Chen Feng, who seemed unwell.
Autumn suggested, “Dr. Lin in the village has good medical skills. Should we have him check her pulse?”
Mama Li disagreed, saying, “Madam is of noble status and should not be seen by just any rural doctor.”
Autumn blushed at her response.
An hour later, the renowned physician from the county town was brought in by Luo Xiao.
Chen Feng lay on the bed with the canopy pulled back, her hand extending beyond the canopy. Mama Li placed a silk handkerchief on her wrist, and only then did the old physician enter the bedroom to feel her pulse.
Later, the old physician smiled and said, “Congratulations, Madam. This is a smooth pulse, you are indeed pregnant.”
Even though they had already suspected it, Mama Li and the others were overjoyed.
Mama Li asked, “Should our Madam take some nourishing pills for the pregnancy?”
The old physician smiled and replied, “Madam’s health is excellent, and the baby is healthy too. There’s no need for medication, proper nutrition will suffice.” He also wrote down some dietary recommendations for pregnant women.
Mama Li had Autumn pay the consultation fee and rewarded the physician with two taels of silver. After seeing the physician off, Xiaomo was sent to the front yard and Luyuan to inform the old Marquis and her parent of the good news.
Upon hearing the news, the old Marquis was delighted and promptly dispatched messengers to the capital, the county town, and Yingshuan Monastery to share the joy with the Marquisate, grandchildren, Chen Shiying, and his daughter-in-law. Additionally, he rewarded each servant in Tangyuan with one tael of silver.
Upon learning the news, Mrs. Wang was even more elated. She had Auntie Mu carry four hens and pick up a hundred eggs, placing them in a basket. Along with Mrs. Wu, she went to Yanxiang Pavilion to visit Chen Feng.
Chen Ming disapproved, saying, “How much can chickens and eggs be worth? I have some bird’s nests, I’ll bring them for Feng to eat.”
Mrs. Wang shook her head, stating, “Bird’s nests, ginseng, and other supplements like these are what girls appreciate. Our chickens and eggs are much better than those outside. Our daughter will like them.”
Mrs. Wu chimed in, “Indeed, I agree. I also think that the chicken soup at sister’s house tastes better, and the eggs are more flavorful.”
Wang Cheng added, “Regardless of how things are outside, chickens and eggs are always good for nourishment. I’ll go buy some from the village and take them to my niece, it’s our gesture of goodwill.”
Word of this spread to Xiangluo Village by the afternoon, where Grandma Chen, Mrs. Hu, and the two daughters-in-law of Wu the Carpenter arrived with chickens and eggs.
The most delighted of all was little Chu Hanyan. When she heard the news of having a younger sibling, she first burst into a few crisp laughs, then dashed off towards the front yard. Mama Song hurriedly stopped her, asking, “Hey, where are you rushing off to?”
“I want to tell my brother the good news.” Chu Hanyan broke free from Mama Song’s grasp and continued running towards the front yard.
Meanwhile, Mr. Liao in the study was shaking his head while reading an article.
Chu Hanyan knew the location of the study but hadn’t been inside before. She had forgotten her fear and ran inside, following the sound until she reached the entrance of the lecture hall.
Ignoring Mr. Liao staring at her, she stood at the doorway and exclaimed loudly, “Brother, Uncle, Mother is expecting a baby, so we will have a little brother or sister!”
Upon hearing this, both Chen Dabao and Chen Lu couldn’t contain their excitement and stood up.
Seeing their reactions, Mr. Liao sternly stated, “It’s class time now, and you should not be distracted by anything.” He reprimanded, “You two are to be the pillars of the court in the future, remaining steadfast even if Mount Tai were to crumble. How can a little girl’s words divert your attention from learning?”
Chen Lu and Dabao quickly sat back down.
Seeing that she had not shared her joy with her brother and uncle, the little girl burst into tears, crying loudly.
Mama Song hurriedly picked her up and took her back to the inner courtyard.
Although Lu and Dabao continued to sit and listen to the lesson, their minds were elsewhere. Especially Dabao, his joy had already flown to his mother’s side.
Finally, when school was over, the two of them rushed to Hai Tang Hall. Chen Lu now joined Dabao for lunch in Hai Tang Hall every afternoon, rested in Energetic Courtyard afterward, and then went to the study in the evening before returning to Luyuan.
The old Marquis was happily chatting with Chen Feng, advising her to take care of herself, not to overwork, and to give birth to a healthy and chubby grandson.
As the two boys entered the room, Mama Li stopped them, saying, “Oh, Young Master Dabao, Young Master Lu, don’t disturb Madam.”
Chen Lu stood at a respectful distance from Chen Feng and said with a smile, “Sister, am I going to have another nephew?”
Chen Feng nodded with a smile.
Dabao thought Mama Li was overreacting. Did she really need to remind them not to disturb their mother? He said, “I care the most about the little brother or sister in my mother’s belly, so I won’t disturb my mother.”
He walked over and gently touched Chen Feng’s belly, saying in a mature tone, “Mother needs to rest and take care of the pregnancy. Stop worrying about the dowry shop and the dowry estate. Eat more delicious food, like Sasa, who had twins in one pregnancy. Both the little brother and sister will have arrived.”
Everyone burst into laughter.
The old Marquis chuckled and praised, “Dabao said it well.”
Chen Feng couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. The old Marquis’s hope for a grandchild had already put pressure on her, and now this little one was hoping for twins. However, giving birth to twins was a privilege of time-traveling women. At worst, she would have twins, as it would be embarrassing not to have them as a time-traveler.
But there could always be exceptions. Who knew if she would have a boy or a girl? Regardless, she would love them all and hoped to have more children, aiming for a mix of sons and daughters. With her inner space and Swallow Agarwood Tree, she would take care of herself, avoiding the fate of ancient women who felt like they were facing the underworld when giving birth.
