What Should I Do If I Time-Traveled Forty Years Later and My Lover Has Become an Old Man?
Forty Years Later Chapter 10.1

Yu Yao has a six-month observation period. According to the confidentiality agreement, she cannot go abroad or engage in social work during this time. As a legal citizen and a special transmigrator, she has a one-year social allowance to support her living expenses. This six-month period is meant for her to adapt to the new society.

During this time, she can stay at home, learn various social norms, and have ample time to contemplate her future. It’s said that among the four transmigrators who came before her, the second one, a little girl, couldn’t adapt to the decades-old transmigration and developed autism, eventually committing suicide at the age of sixteen. It’s unclear whether this was due to inadequate care from her subsequent family or other reasons.

Yu Yao is probably the transmigrator who adapted the fastest and had the best mindset. After overcoming the initial confusion, she adjusted her mood, spending her days either playing games or studying various “historical” documents Jiang Zhonglin provided, learning about events over the years. She also researched many certification requirements for current kindergarten teachers and worked with Jiang Zhonglin on cooking and shopping.

The old man who originally said he would just accompany her to familiarize herself and not join her again, now followed her silently every day when she went out. Yu Yao was too lazy to comment on it. As they walked, their conversations evolved from initial silence to more casual chats.

One day, Yu Yao couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you a teacher? Why haven’t you been going to classes these days?”

Jiang Zhonglin replied, “I resigned from my position as the head of the Department of Literature at Haida University a year ago. However, because of my acquaintance with the dean, he hoped I would return to give lectures twice a month. So, I don’t need to go to class every day now.”

Yu Yao, perceptive as ever, detected a problem. “You resigned a year ago, and you’re only sixty-five. Back in our time, we had to retire at seventy. Why did you retire so early?”

Jiang Zhonglin smiled wryly. “Last year… I was ill for a while and stayed in the hospital. I felt I lacked energy, so I decided to resign and sort out some of the materials from these years… It wasn’t a big deal.”

Yu Yao frowned. “What illness? Was it serious?”

Jiang Zhonglin: “Not serious, just a minor illness.” He seemed calm, “It’s just that as I age, my health isn’t as good as when I was younger. I fell ill easily, but I’ve long since recovered.”

Yu Yao was silent for a moment, then took out her personal terminal and opened it, ignoring him. Jiang Zhonglin thought she was playing games, but before long, Yu Yao put the terminal down and said, “From now on, you’ll run with me every morning to exercise. Don’t worry, I’ve checked, it definitely won’t exceed your physical limits. We’ll just jog a lap around here.”

Jiang Zhonglin hesitated when he saw the distance she had marked. “This…”

Yu Yao: “What’s the matter? The older you get, the more you need to take care of your health. Exercise properly!”

Having lived in this community for so many years, Jiang Zhonglin naturally knew some neighbors. Every morning, as he accompanied Yu Yao for jogging and shopping, the familiar old folks would greet him, often asking, “Old Jiang / Teacher Jiang, who is this young lady? She’s so pretty. Is she your relative?”

Every time Jiang Zhonglin stayed silent, Yu Yao would smile at the neighbors and say, “I’m Teacher Jiang’s wife.”

And then she would inevitably have to explain her forty-year transmigration to the astonished onlookers.
